A horrifying incident in Coal Harbour has left a Vancouver dog owner shattered.

Security camera footage from a balcony overlooking a stretch of the Seawall in Coal Harbour shows two dogs coming together with one viciously attacking the other.

One owner pulls his dog up by its leash. The other dog leaps into the air to grab the dog and mauls it.

“As soon as I put him down, he dropped down and did not move at all,” Farshid Tabari, the owner of the injured dog, said.

The injured dog was rushed to a vet but died from its injuries over the weekend.

The attack happened a week ago Sunday.

Animal control officers are trying to locate the attacking dog and its owner, who left the scene.

The owner is believed to have been wearing a grey-and-white patterned jacket and had a neck tattoo behind his left ear.

It shouldn't be to hard to find him. I can't imagine there being a whole lot of people with a 1987 tattoo going down the side of their neck.

Not sure if it was the mauling action or the the choking part when the dog was lifted into the air by the collar or both those actions that could have led to shock...

i've noticed that there seem to be more and more irresponsible pet owners now. CLEAN UP YOUR DAMN PETS MESS.

Fucking idiots not leashing their dogs. I have a small 10lb Chihuahua and every time a see a dog off leash I will pick him up. "Oh it's okay he is friendly" The owner usually says. Well if your dog starts attacking mine, it won't be pretty for you as I'll take any steps necessary to protect him and myself. Any sort of aggression towards us will mean expensive vet bills for you. I don't have the time nor patience for stupid dog owners.

Not against all pets owner as a friend of mine have 2 dogs and I love house sitting them coz they are well trained and well behave. But pet owners like the one in the news is the reason why so many landlord do not want to rent out to tenants who have pets. I mean a pet like that will literally destroy your house/apartments and there is no way to tell if you are a responsibility pet owner or not.

Also buddy dragging the dog up and dangling by the neck probably didnt help.. looks like typically pitbull owner etc but there sure wasnt any urgency or anything after the attack..

I adopted a Min Pin at the age of 2. He was quite traumatized, I believe from being "abused" by children and not being raised and trained properly. It has taken me over a year of training to get him to even accept hand pets from humans. It was a long hard process but he's much better and now accepts pets from people but hes not that cuddly type of dog. Now he has my trust and we bond amazingly together, we walk off leash all the time but he gets very protective on leash. Best part is you can see it in his emotions that he now loves his life and is extremely happy and their unconditional love.

Now when I walk him on the sidewalk he doesn't like other dogs while on leash, so I keep a very tight leash and he stays beside me. When owners bring their dogs up to him, he gets extremely defensive, hairs raised and starts huffing warning that he isn't happy but doesn't bark. I get owners all the time stating their dog is nice when they walk by and I always have to state my dog doesn't like other dogs. Its not my fault, hes been traumatized and simply my dog has trust issues. I don't blame my dog for that.

Sometimes owners who have friendly dogs sometimes need to keep them on close leash around others because not all dogs are the same. I even stated to owners that my dog get aggressive if your dog gets to close. I've even had owners go "its okay my dog is nice". Until my dog lunges at their dog for being to close, that usually shocks the owner. I've already warned you, you're stupid if you don't comprehend. Once my dog gets to know your dog hes perfectly fine, but typically it has to be off leash.

Extremely sad to hear a dog died from this, couldn't even watch the video as I hate stories like this, its so sad to hear. I love dogs way to much, and I feel really bad for its owners on what their going through. My dog is my child.

my dog is the friendliest dog in the world as am sure everyone says but even tho she is stupid friendly I did not let her go up to random dogs and let her sniff or try and visit, like u said ^^ your dog is not the friendliest on leash and we have to respect that.

When they find out who he is I bet he'll give the typical pitt bull owner style of a reply

"He's a really good dog and has never done this before. He's great around kids and is trained to not run away without a leas...the other dog must've provoked it by looking at him wrong."

This guy is a fine example of why dogs should be on a leash at all times except in a dog park where it enter at your own risk. If I'm in a dog park and a pitt bull comes in I call my 120lb german shepherd over and we leave. There's a reason why people don't trust those dogs and this one is a fine reminder.

How people can know so little about dogs when they own one boggles my mind. I'll hear the "my dog is friendly" while it's growling with its tail down. It may be friendly to *you* but it's not friendly to me and the dog with me. Or the "my dog is well behaved". It may be very well behaved in your house with no distractions, but when it came running over to me while you've been yelling its name with no effect it's pretty clear you haven't trained it for shit.

Of course most of that wouldn't be a problem if people kept their dogs on leashes like they're supposed to (unless in a designated off-leash area) regardless of how well it's trained. If it's actually well trained it'll be by your side and the leash will be slack anyways, but if your dog does misbehave you've already got it conveniently attached to you.

Let me begin by saying that is a truly shitty thing to happen, nobody deserves to lose their best friend. And agreed that the guy is a complete asshole for walking away. If both dogs are off leash then it's my opinion that both owners should split the bill, but in that case and especially in that area... Gotta have your dog on a leash.

That being said, I don't know where you guys are getting the pit bull thing from (unless I missed it in the article or you guys have a higher resolution video than me), because to me it just looks like a small dog and a medium size dog.

Furthermore, and this will be tough for the deceased dogs family to hear but it definitely looks like the little dog lunged at the bigger guy first. Now it is extremely hard to tell from the video but i'm thinking that that very hard/charp/quick yank on the dogs neck did not do it any favours at all, especially on an animal that size. And i've watched the video a bunch of times but it doesn't look like the big dog got a hold of the little one. Normally when a dog is trying to kill another dog it goes right for the neck and then starts whipping back and forth as hard as it can (ask me how I know, it's not fun to see).

I've got two rescues at home with differing personalities, one being a mastiff/shepherd thing and the other a pitty/hound thing. The shepherd is older and doesn't give a fuck about anything really, she's good with other dogs for the most part until they start pissing them off and then it's a quick bark/nip/growl to tell them to fuck off and that's that. In my opinion i'm ok with my dog informing another that she's had enough. My pitty is a young guy and very energetic, all he wants to do is play with other dogs and unfortunately his version of playing is a little rambunctious so I know I need to keep an eye on him at the dog park in case the other dogs aren't a fan.

I hate the stereotype of "pitbull" owners, it's sad. Although i'm slightly hypocritical as I stereotype all the time haha.

in the follow up video its pretty clearly some kind of pitty cross, they zoom in on it in the news story portion after the surveillance video.

While it is a blanket statement, in my experience pittbulls are pretty shit dogs imo.. and i've -never- known any respectable person or family to own one. They are an aggressive breed, period, thats not an opinion its fact. These stories are ALWAYS this type of dog whether its a pure bred or cross, notice how it's never a golden retreiver, or hell, even shepherds etc.

I've grown up with dogs, my family has always had dogs/multiple dogs at one time and dogs with more wild/aggressive temperaments will never have that behavior taught out of them. We had a husky that was a great dog, very well mannered, behaved fantastic, could walk off the leash around other dogs, listened well, but this dog ended up biting my hand a few times because it was just a natural reaction when i wasnt thinking about what i was doing.

Since that Husky we've had a few different lab crosses, some of the nicest best dogs ive been around, completely even temperament regardless of the situation, however, occasionally at the dog park they will get into it with other dogs, seemingly out of the blue on both parts

Situations like these are always amplified with aggressive breeds imo. And i've never seen a pitbull owner who i assumed to be a responsible owner that trained the hell out of their dogs and had a super well behaved dog that listened and was even keel, it's literally -always- the opposite.

Couldn't care less about a ban on them personally.

It's not the pet to blame, it's the owners.

IF you cannot properly train/control your pet, why bother accepting him into your family and take him/her out endanger other loved ones?

Fuck expensive vet bills, it's all about how much of 'after shock' your best friend will carry for the rest of his/her life.

Back then, I took all possible ways to reach out for the irresponsible owners who never came forward, but at the end of the day, he got caught.

He was busy defending his pet and pointing finger at mine, but luckily CCTV footage and other pet owners around my neighborhood's petition/inputs regarding his pet helped me to iron things out with BC animals control and city hall animal control centre.

Now he will never be able to take his pet to anywhere without a leash&muzzle at all times, and their pet need to be registered to the city wherever they're residing in+wherever they move from now on.

BE RESPONSIBLE and NEVER ASSUME "my dog is friendly, just wants to play" shit.

I feel so sorry for the family.

Not all dogs get along, doesnt matter the size or breed or if your dog is friendly. If your dog doesnt like the smell of the other, or vice versa.. any one of them can lunge instinctively and the other dog will protect itself. Its hard nowadays because theres so many more stories coming out of dog attacks and the owners walking away. If you want your dog to make friends, make a doggy date in a safe environment. Your dogs safety is your responsibility, it only takes one second or one bite and his/her life can change forever.

My family has 3 dogs. 1 stocky bichon, 1 slender bichon and 1 small shih tzu cross. The stocky one is mine. He used to beg me to approach other dogs when out for a walk, he does this thing where he stands on his two back legs and puts his 2 front paws together and waves them up and down.. Its his trick called "Say Please" when he wants something.

Now he's older he knows I wont approach other dogs so he doesnt bother anymore but if an offleash dog approaches us, I will shorten the leash so hes right beside me and I will get down to their level and put my hand on his neck. That way if the offleash dog tries to bite him, my arm will get in the way and take the bite instead..if Im also at their level, I can pull a fight apart faster.

The dogs who are offleash are usually a lot bigger than him and the owners will say "dont worry my dogs friendly" but dogs communicate off body language, one small movement can cause an accident and thats not a chance im willing to take with my dogs life.

If I get mauled, i would probably survive, but he most likely wouldnt. My dog loves getting pets, loves kids, he's very gentle with my bunny who plays with all 3 dogs free roaming, but hes still an animal with moods/feelings. There could be days that hes not feeling up to stranger interactions, and thats my responsibility to be aware of that.

I'll give you that, but I'm going to hazard a guess that news stations have turned down a news story about a dog attacking/killing another dog and then "the next day" aired a story about a pitty going after another dog. It just makes better news to feed into peoples' fear. Just leave the city and you'll see plenty of wild dogs, should see the dogs that come through the SPCA up here. A bad big husky is a pretty intimidating thing.

A lot of the negative stereotypes have to do with the "typical" kind of person who owns a pitbull or similar intimidating-looking dog.

You're not going to see very many 20 year old little Asian girls with them, or senior citizens, or families with small children (or any children, really) who own pitbulls.

But unfortunately there are lot of douchebags (such as this piece of shit above) who own those types of dogs, and train them in a manner that reflects their own shitty attitudes and wannabe-tough demeanor. Only difference is the pitbull will actually do something about it.

A similar analogue to the dog argument can be seen in people who drive lifted coal-rolling "bro-dozer" pickup trucks. Nothing wrong with the vehicles themselves, but the average person who owns them isn't exactly the most shining example of society's best and brightest...

So they found the guy and interviewed him.

CTV got pictures of the pitbull owner from his FaceBook before he made it private. He has the exact same name as a CTV news anchor.
