Is this a scam?

We're going up to whistler next week and tickets are freaking expensive $155 after taxes.

I found this guy on Craigslist that is selling tickets for $88 USD. From his area code he lives somewhere in California.
He said he works for a corporation that gets tickets at a discount. He said all he needs from me is my name and birthdate and he can buy the tickets in my name and I can pick up the tickets at any kiosk.
He said once I get the tickets and verify they work, then I can paypal him the money.

He said I can send him the paypal via gift for $88 USD or $92USD if i want to use the goods/services option. He said he's 100% legit so I should save the money and just send it as a gift, but he understands if I want to pay the extra.

If I want to be protected from paypal, I need to use the goods/service payment option, correct?

Does this sound fishy to anyone? I talked to him on the phone and he sounds like a legitimate guy, his english is good and doesn't sound foreign. Would you guys trust this?

edit; I meant goods/service option, he will allow me to send it as a goods/service if I want

edit 2:

IT WORKEDDDDD!!!
I'm happy to tell you guys that the tickets worked for us, no problem.
He sent us the confirmation #'s the morning of, went to the prepaid ticket booth to pick up the tickets, scanned them in and worked for us no problem.
It saved us $140 (four passes), so we're super happy. If he didn't allow us to pay after we picked up the tickets, we definitely wouldn't have done it, but because he allowed us to pick up the tickets first, I think it was worth the risk.

I called him the night before again just to feel him out and after talking to him the second time, I got a really good vibe from him, so I wasn't nervous at all picking up the tickets. We're super happy because $140 is significant for us.

Never ever ever ever pay someone for goods and services and label it as “gift”. That should be your first red flag. If it’s gift you cannot open a PayPal dispute

92 usd is 115 cad. Its only a matter of 40 dollars to have the piece of mind. Take the risk or play it safe?

Does the fact that he says I can pick up the tickets first, use them to make sure they work, and then I pay him change anything for anyone?

Does he work for Vail Resorts or something?

This is how they do their Epic Passes, you pre-order online and you can either have your pre-loaded pass shipped to you or pick it up at a kiosk ready to go.

Might be legit, but tough to say.

I just spent last week in Whistler. Hope you have better weather than I did. The snow sucked ass, hard as a fucking rock.

Sounds fine if you get the merchandise first. Worse case scenario youd be buying the tickets full price at whistler. Maybe dont use your own cellphone or email just in case hes fishing for personal info to hack your shit.

Since Vail Resorts owns Whistler, you can use their epic passes around any of their resorts. So yes, this is possible.

One stupid thing I found out, since they bought Whistler you can no longer buy beer by the pitcher at the Roundhouse (or any of the other mountain top pubs) fucking prudes.

If you're skiing multiple days, it adds up to much more than "a few bucks"

If he's offering you the option to pay with goods and services on PayPal, then it should be ok. You have PayPal protection abd your credit card.

I've bought a lot of stuff online and this doesn't really strike me as odd other than the fact that he lives in California (which is explained in one of the posts above).

Worst case scenario, you end up paying the normal price for the passes like you would've and spending a few minutes opening a dispute.

sounds like a stolen credit card scam...i had the exact same scenario for sold out tickets for circque over the holidays on craigslist...50% off and told me that i can etransfer the full amount AFTER i enter and get in my seats....was about to go through with it and then the next day, someone else posted on craigslist saying that after he sat down, he got escorted outside because the seats were purchased with a stolen credit card

the guy got away with it for the first few weeks and then he stopped replying to my msgs after the guy posted the warning

i wouldnt trust it

^ yep..

This is exactly how stolen cc scam work. Even with airline or other gift card etc. U can call to verify but eventually gc gets cancelled as cc comes up as stolen.

Check with paypal buyers protection first.

That almost makes it more shady. Why would he take the risk of not being paid at all unless he's buying them with a stolen CC or something? With the RFID passes now too if your pass gets flagged partway through the day you're at the very least wasting time going to buy a new pass.

FYI the only check anymore of a valid pass is at gondolas/chairs from the village bases. Once you're up mountain, you could practically throw your pass away.

If you have to ask if something is a scam, it's probably a scam.

I've bought the lift tickets for Whistler in the same manner in the past from a friend's coworker. She just needed our name and DOB and we were able to pick up the tickets at the hill.

Came out to around $100 CAD.

Go ski first then transfer him the money since he's willing to let you confirm that they are legit
