Even more penalties for distracted driving

Tougher penalties for distracted driving to come into effect in BC this month | Daily Hive Vancouver

I'm all for safer driving and such, but the only "cell phone traps" i've seen are at red lights. Weird how touching your phone to adjust GPS at a 2 minute red light..and texting while driving, are the same penalty.

twitchyzero 03-06-2018 01:12 AM

$2000...this is more about stopping the ICBC hemorrhaging than about saving lives

time to jailbreak my iPhone so I can Snapchat on the infotainment ...no but seriously Apple Maps is still so awful

anyone know what they mean by large powerful scopes to detect electronic devices?

320icar 03-06-2018 06:49 AM

Apple maps is fucking awful, and I hate how if i want to use my cars built in gps I can’t plug my phone in to charge (or Apple CarPlay starts)

Meh, bring on the stiffer penalties, doesn’t effect me. The amount of people I see who still fuck around with their phones just proves people havent gotten the message yet

Acura604 03-06-2018 07:14 AM

most of us know this of course, but there's a large amount of noobs on here....

so.. noobs... take my advice, take your smartphone and throw it into the backseat so you can't reach it... most of you probably have bluetooth so no need to have the phone in your hand....

ScizzMoney 03-06-2018 08:13 AM

Distracted driving is a huge problem. Every time I'm at a stop light you can always see someone looking into their lap every half second, clearly on their phone or picking a mustard stain off of their pants.

I did something I'll never do again. I didn't think it'd work, was kind of funny but not at all since it almost caused an accident. I was behind a young girl / woman who was clearly on her phone at a stop light. I honked my horn while the light was still red, she actually started to go. Looking back I assume she does that so often that she gets honked at for sitting at green lights and knew to just go. She drove forward about 20ft before realizing what was going on and stopped and backed up.

Hehe 03-06-2018 09:00 AM

The part that I find funny is that they have these strict penalties for "distracted driving" for checking GPS running on their phones, while cars equipped with built-in GPS or even CarPlay/Android Auto are fine.

I fail to see how I'm less distracted by using those built-in options. :fuckthatshit:

But I guess I better not give them more ideas... next thing we know, we'd be banned from listening to radio while driving.

:awesom:

You sir, truly are a living legend.
Lol!

MarkyMark 03-06-2018 09:38 AM

Can't you use your phone GPS it is mounted to the dash? If you rely on GPS so much to get around that's where it should be anyways, not your crotch.

Acura604 03-06-2018 10:22 AM

The newer 'built-in options' are terrible... holy crap, the 2016 civic and that shitty touch panel to choose things like music, audio source, etc... and yah, i get it..."but you can do all that with voice recognition" lol..yah right... that shit never works.

these new infotainment systems are just as distracting... i'll bet those are next to be put on the list..

my biggest gripe is the filthy smokers...they got something frickin' burning in their hands while driving... so...they drop the butt...what do u think happens?? they let their seat burn/pants burn? no... they get distracted and try to find the burning butt feverishly before it burns. lame lame lame...and of course, even if they are treating their lungs like an ashtray - they dont want to treat their car like an ashtray...rather they throw the butt out the window....

Just reading your post gave me cancer. More than the 2nd hand smoke coming out the window of a smokers car.

I don't think navigation units should be considered a distraction. The alternatives are more dangerous and distracting. No, I am not pulling over at a random spot to look at a map(which is more dangerous, especially on a highway), or trying to memorize the route(my memory is garbage and it takes concentration).

I had and have 2 cars that have built-in navigation units, both of them are fairly ancient. The one in the Accord isn't even touch screen.

As far as the navigation units themselves go, they are not completely terrible. The Accord had loads of buttons for the audio controls, while the RX-8 allows me to control the source and presets from the steering wheel.

The Accord actually had a functional voice recognition. I just can't be bothered to memorize all the commands, though. The one in my RX-8 is trash, though. The phone recognition works okay, but the navigation one never does.

I never understood why people would smoke in their cars. Used to vape, though, but since I started driving a stick, that stopped.

The phone is supposed to be secured, just put it in your pocket or the console. Although with the angle of the seats in some cars phones like to come loose, I don't know why but somehow in my car my phones slide out of my pocket and either behind my back or onto the floor behind me.

most phones are super huge now... depends on your pocket...can you imagine a note 8 in your front jeans pocket? and sitting down in a car? lol

underscore 03-06-2018 12:06 PM

That's why I hate massive phones. Even my S7 gouges me in the stomach if I bend over while it's in my ski jacket.

yray 03-06-2018 01:11 PM

:megusta: changing temps and turning on seat heat with voice commands in the morning

originalhypa 03-06-2018 02:20 PM

I'm still trying to get used to my new 2018 Tundra.
Damn, these new vehicles have some serious technology. It's heads and tails beyond even my wife's 2016 Highlander.

GS8 03-06-2018 03:04 PM

I like to have fun when I drive so nothing really distracts me. Plus I love the rickety feeling of my 20 year old car, supercharger whine and my phone set to vibrate, rubbing my scrotum constantly because I'm still a scene kid.

:sweetjesus: this is life

Wow lol I really hope one day you pull up next to me while I'm having a cigarette. Would love to witness this rant in person, as I casually exhale :fullofwin:

Toss it in the glove box or the centre console, or if you really want to be safe against tickets - in the trunk. Cops can't say shit when it's physically not on you.

Ya that's allowed. I have mine mounted to my dash at all times even when I'm not using it as a GPS.

FerrariEnzo 03-06-2018 05:10 PM

They gotta make it worse.. like license suspension or something otherwise people will never learn.. and for people whos receive one, have their car towed!

Yep, my car is too fun for me to get distracted.

I just toss my Mate 9(which is freakin' massive) in the door pocket when I drive.

did something similar way back in like 2007 before all this cell phone ban. had a car with a loud exhaust, i reved a bit to roll the car forward, chick beside me looking down at her phone heard me and started accelerating... into the back of the car stopped in front of her. wasnt done intentionally as i just wanted to roll the car forward

ImportPsycho 03-06-2018 10:35 PM

I'm all for it if cops do less of standing in nice cool shades under the skytrain pillars, and more driving around and nabbing those who are actually DRIVING AND USING their phone.

What an stupid girl... So what? she just started driving forward for 20 feet while still having her eyes on the phone to not notice the light was still red? That's even more retarded.
