| Good decent router?
sup guys,
just got lightspeed internet (which is like teksavvy in terms of using shaw as a third party), got 75 download for $41 which is not bad! Tested the modem connection to my macbook and got 80 download.
bad news is that I got a used linksys E3000 and its giving me 25-30 download and weak wifi
any recommendations? $100 price range

| [Amazon] AMAZON.COM Asus AC1900 router REFURB $64.87USD - RedFlagDeals.com Forums
Ship that to Point Roberts or Blaine. Excellent router.
Also, to get higher speeds on Wifi your receiving devices must support 5Ghz.

I use TP-LINK AC3150.
Got it for around $110 a bit over a year ago.
Rock stable.

I did hear bad things about Chinese made routers have monitoring thing built in, that's why I prefer to buy Synology, Asus, Buffalo and routers that can be flashed to DD-WRT.
I have Synology RT2600ac and parents are using Asus RT-AC1200G-plus (less than $100)

The Asus RT-AC1200G is a pretty good router for most people, given the cost. My folks at home use this. I'm using a discontinued Netgear RC6220 which I picked up for $72 or so. Both routers have had zero problems for about two years in.
Also, consider what your devices are capable of. If the device is old and is not compatible with the latest router technology, you won't see any gains.

For those with Telus (and Shaw for the most part depending on the model of modem they give you) it’s rarely worth it to buy a 3rd party router if you’re thinking you will see a gain in performance in terms of signal strength over their equipment.
The Arris 3200 Telus gives out now, while it may not be the best gateway, I’ve only ever seen 1 3rd party router outperform the signal strength it provides, and it was like a $400 model so this woman could get WiFi in her garden.
Different story obviously with teksavvy etc where you have to provide your own equipment. Apple airport setup is pretty much the best setup going

^ interesting, I'm remember the garbage gateways back in the days so even today I immediately disabled the wifi and put them in bridge mode if I can...now that I think about the Arris, it's been pretty rock solid as a modem
the Hitron from Shaw 150 is downright trash in my experience..not just range but reliability...pretty sure they've come and replaced it too

The recent deployment of the Arris 3200 from Telus is a huge improvement over their Actiontec units. Everyone and their dogs in my neighbourhood had it, and man, it sucked ass big time. It wasn't until I got the Asus RT-1200AC that we saw a huge improvement. Having said that, we still use the Asus and keep the Arris just as a gateway. So far, so good.

Shaw occasionally still gives out their big motorolla gateway which seemed like it was pretty decent compared to the Hitron when I had it before

| RT-AC1200G Dual-Band Wireless Router - $99.99
A colleague of mine is also using this: DIR-842 AC1200 Wireless Gigabit Router - $79.99. He lives in a pretty big house, and one year in, so far, so good.

the Telus modem u guys r talking about is still made by actiontec, not arris
shaw's motorola(now branded as arris) modem was their first attempt at 5GHz wifi, its old and outdated now, hitron sucks balls due to the intel chip used which causes frequent ping spikes for no good reason, the good shaw modem/router to date is the cisco version. unfortunately the hitron and cisco is classified as the same in shaw's system, so when u get services from shaw, its a hit and miss to get the cisco version. the hitron also costs about $100 less compared to the cisco version so 90% of the advanced modem stock are hitrons.
honestly tho, if u live in an apartment/condo, the ISP provided modem/routers that has 5GHz should be good enough given it is installed in a central location. if ur talking about townhouses/houses, no one router can be powerful enough to have complete wifi coverage. at this point its best to run some wires and set up access points around the house like from ubiquiti.

I've been running an ASUS RT-N65U since Shaw first came out with the modem/router combo and it sucked for gaming (avg speed was good but lag spikes every few seconds) ~5 years ago? I don't know if it's still in production but it's been a tank.

My home is only 440 sq ft, my Synology is installed at one corner, it is struggling to gain strong wifi in opposite corner. It drops from 350Mbps to 20Mbps and almost none outside the apartment where my IP cam located. Added a Dlink Extender at the end, it gets better but like some of you said, find the best spot to install your router will solve a lot of headache.

I always stick with Asus. They work great, have good firmware support, can also be flashed with Merlin. The new ones support mesh.

I just picked up the 3pk Google Wifi.. works great in my house... Wifi is strong.. I even turned off the wifi from the shaw router and strickly using wifi.. its fast.. pretty much same speed through my house... I can even walk across the street and still have connection..
Placed 1 near the front and back of the house and 1 in slightly off middle of the house..
I also have the TP Link TL-PA9020P KIT powerline for my room.. its great... have older powerline from 3-4 years ago and its starting to crap out on me

last thing I need is a direct mic (Amazon Alexa), or a more obvious backdoor to my connection (Google Wifi)
