IMO a lot of why the Middle East is so fucked up now is because of all the US and Western intervention in the regions. Western talking heads not realizing their actions in one country, or against/for a specific ethnic group, tribe, or religious sect have repercussions that affect the entire region.

Look at the state of countries in South America right now... the amount of democratic leaders killed and displaced by totalitarian regimes due to the fear of the "Red Scare" directly caused that. The Middle East is just another version of that. Except this time it is a mix of religion and politics rather than a singular fear of communism. Again due to US intervention and not properly understanding the ripple effect.
