Justin Trudeau announces new Amazon Vancouver headquarters to bring 3,000 jobs

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday that Amazon is expanding its Vancouver tech hub with a new headquarters.

This is expected to bring an additional 3,000 high tech jobs to the city in fields including e-commerce technology, cloud computing, and machine learning.

The new headquarters will be located at the old Canada Post headquarters, at 349 West Georgia Street where Monday’s announcement was made. It is expected to open in 2022.

This is in addition to Amazon’s current Vancouver offices – including its 156,000 square-foot location in TELUS Garden which opened to Amazon employees in 2015. On top of Monday’s announcement, Amazon also confirmed last November its plans to expand into another downtown site on Dunsmuir Street, which will open in 2020.

“Amazon is excited to create 3,000 more highly skilled jobs in Vancouver,” said Alexandre Gagnon, vice-president of Amazon Canada and Mexico. “Vancouver is home to an incredibly talented and diverse workforce, and these thousands of new employees will invent on behalf of our customers worldwide.”

Amazon already employs more than 6,000 people in Canada. It employs more than 1,000 researchers and engineers in Vancouver.

“Our vibrant cities, which are home to some of the best talent in the world, are poised to attract premier investment that creates the jobs of tomorrow. Canadians share your passion for invention and your commitment to excellence – and that’s why we are excited to see Amazon grow here in Vancouver,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Monday.

too bad most of the big tech companies like hiring foreign nationals over local talent
still, i'm glad we won the contract (surprisingly)

iwantaskyline 04-30-2018 09:49 AM

^This is not Amazon's second headquarters. This is just an expansion of their Vancouver office.

It says that in the article above:

The other location mentioned above is in the 400-block of Dunsmuir.

This news report was from Global News. I posted the URL above. There was a live video of the announcement being made by PM Trudeau at the old VMPO site today.

As for the warehouse... I'm not sure? Having said that, I just ordered something from Amazon, and it says it's being processed at a location in Surrey I've never noticed before in previous orders (usually i see a Richmond address if local).

An additional 3000 jobs from Amazon to Vancouver's tech sector can also mean more demand for housing/rental housing if foreign workers are filling most of these positions. :considered:

In DT Seattle, there are a few city blocks next to each other where a couple Amazon office buildings are, alongside residential buildings and entertainment centers. All designed for Amazon employees to be closer to work. I believe they call it "The Jungle" or "The Forest".

I'm still not up to speed on what the current proposal for the towers above will contain. Before Amazon came along, previous proposals included residential units in the towers, but I don't know if that is gone now.

I was on a plane to and from Las Vegas last week with a crew from the Amazon tech office at the TELUS Garden and they were all very much Canadians. Sat next to one of them and discussed some of the things they work on - was impressive.

Maybe I'm missing something here, why is Trudeau announcing it? Doesn't Amazon have people for that?

yray 04-30-2018 12:13 PM

inb4 canada post building still under federal jurisdiction and don't have to play be bc employment standards law LOL

RRxtar 04-30-2018 04:19 PM

"vancouver real estate is too expensive"

"lets welcome the 3000 new recruited from out of town high paying tech sector employees moving into downtown vancouver!"

*Horganvoice* Not on my watch

Trudeau: "But John, we will be able to just order gasoline from amazon and scrap that pipeline!"

Close to their Seattle HQ, and with some of the lowest pay in the IT sector across N.America...

I can see why Amazon is expanding in Vancouver...

The Canada Post building is pretty impressive....... underground sorting facility. Not that Amazon is going to be doing that, but I remember ages ago, going down there on some kind of a tour. BIG parking lot underground.

Trudeau gov't can spin it all they want... but the fact is they are using Vancouver as a jump bed to their Seattle HQ. Local hires? yeah... maybe... but that's not the main source of their HR.

Why? Because our work visa is so much easier than the US.

Thus, for a potential candidate oversea, they bring them to Van, which is fairly close to their Seattle HQ. After 2yrs with "managerial experience" (just put whatever manager on their title), they apply for US visa, which with the management experience, it becomes much easier.

FerrariEnzo 04-30-2018 05:16 PM

Just to be clear,

THIS is only an Office for Amazon, NOT the 2nd HQ!
This is to compliment their existing office downtown.

Manic! 04-30-2018 05:49 PM

And Harbour air is now offering flights from Vancouver to Seattle via float plane.

3000 high quality jobs coming to Vancouver..

let's complain about something! LUL

!LittleDragon 04-30-2018 06:31 PM

3000 jobs just like that? Me thinks they're call center jobs.... low paying, any 15 year old can do that...

I worked two blocks away and the majority of the Amazon employees that I saw are on work visa...same with Microsoft and Sony Pictures

fun fact: Microsoft pays 20% less AND the same dollar amount as their American counterpart, so I don't blame any of the foreign workers for wanting to GTFO and just using this town for a transitional phase
not sure if office-wide but this was from speaking with someone pretty high up at Redmond

I'm curious to know how you know they are here on a work visa by just seeing them.

twitchyzero 04-30-2018 10:21 PM

they are my clients, I have to talk to them for a better part of an hour
