air conditioner recommendations

its getting hot and my unit faces east lol

looking for a small compact AC for a small apartment
preferably with a humidifier

i don't mind paying up for quality

all input and feedback greatly appreciated!

Ludepower 05-15-2018 02:31 PM

Costco. Hurry before they're sold out.

Ch28 05-15-2018 03:31 PM

Look for ones that have 2 hoses to vent the air and get one that has a higher BTU count. Higher the BTU, the colder your condo will be.

Like Ludepower said, you better get your ass on it because there's going to be shortage like 2 years ago

jing 05-15-2018 03:33 PM

FYI:

@Costco
Danby 14k BTU for $490 in store
Danby 12K BTU for $390 in store

RickyTan3 05-15-2018 05:38 PM

They all suck

MG1 05-15-2018 05:41 PM

I think you're confusing aircons with the VanHoover Canucks..............

I love my Sharp AC. I've had it for at least 15 years. No issues whatsoever.

All my aircons blow......... none of them suck. Sorry, couldn't help it. :troll:

I was once an unbeliever, like yourself. I thought I could cool my condo on fans, alone. Then, a perfect storm of gift cards, sales, and impending hot weather happened. I purchased a 12,000 BTU hunk of cooling, and became forever grateful for air conditioned technology.

I know it only gets scorching hot a few days in a year, but once you buy one for those few days, then you have access to it for those hot days where you don't absolutely need it, but would be nice to have, just because you have one now. I think it's a small price to pay for the amount of comfort you can get for years to come.

lol, it was so good, I bought a 2nd one, just so I can have one for downstairs and upstairs.

dapperfied 05-15-2018 08:19 PM

I doubt you'll find an AC with a humidifer (AC dehumidifies; humidification defeats the purpose).

If you're getting a portable unit, the two-hose recommendation earlier is better than a single-hose. With a two-hose unit, the condenser side draws outside air in through the condenser coil and discharges it outside.

With a single-hose unit, the condenser side draws indoor air in through the condenser coil and discharges it outside. This creates a slight negative pressure in your living space, drawing air from outside (or, if you're in a condo/apartment with a common hallway, the hallway). That's bad if the outside air is warmer than your place plus you're taking freshly air conditioned air and discharging it outside, another example of poor efficiency.

If you're going the portable route, make sure the unit evaporates the condensate out the exhaust, otherwise you may need to empty the water reservoir multiple times a day on humid days plus leaving stagnant water inside your unit is a recipe for bacterial growth.

A window unit is a better option than a portable as the compressor and condenser coil are outside, meaning no heat sources in your living space. They're roughly 25% more efficient than a portable unit, but will require a mounting bracket and they're usually designed for windows that slide vertically (many windows slide horizontally or swivel).

If it's a permanent residence, a heat pump is probably your best option as it can provide cooling when it's warm outside and is a cheap source of heat in the cooler months, but these will be significantly more expensive to purchase and should be professionally installed.

The window units also are almost always not allowed by strata in most modern buildings.

I live on the 35th Floor and my condo averages 21-25℃ on a normal day. An Air Conditioner is a huge life saver for condo living. Can't leave the balcony door open since the cat would jump off the building. So we enjoy our condo with a nice cool breeze.

bcrdukes 05-16-2018 08:08 AM

But cats always land on their feet. :troll:

Tell that to the 5th floor resident who got a nice new red paint job on their balcony when the place was first built..

Just a few hundred to not feel like dying for those 3 weeks a year. Can't sleep, staying late at the office just for AC lol. Finally got one two years ago and feel stupid for depriving myself for all these years

dapperfied 05-16-2018 08:58 AM

It's totally worth it when you try to sleep on a hot night.

Why not get a screen door? Would Mr whiskers shred right through?

Limited to no options, Strata wont allow a screen door installed that has to be screwed into the door trim as that voids warranty. Which I still haven't found a screen door that doesn't require screwing into the door frame.

ST184 05-16-2018 10:25 AM

Anybody heard of INNOVA 2.0 or have had them installed in a strata suite?
