I got curious and tried looking up stuff about Kentucky bourbon exports. Apparently we have already done this retaliatory tariff on Kentucky distilled spirits back in 2018. At the time, it seemed to be a 10% retaliatory tariff. When the tariffs was lifted later (in June 2019?), export figures for the bourbon coming to Canada went from $48M to $54M.
And now the Kentucky distilled spirits exports is probably a $90M+ industry.
IMO, losing 10%+ of your business is obviously not good, but I am not sure if that'll cause enough pain. https://www.weku.org/the-commonwealt...new-trade-wars

I can't say I've ever bought a bottle of American hard liquor in my life.
(I don't drink a lot of hard liquor to begin with, have a bottle of Tofino Jalepeno vodka for making Caesars, and a 3 year old bottle of Bacardi in my pantry)
My neighbour gave me a bottle of Maker's Mark last year for helping him wire up his little backyard studio that he built last summer. Took one sip, haven't touched it since (Whisky is not for me). It's relegated to making BBQ sauce.

Over the weekend, the president announced extraordinary new tariffs on Mexico, Canada and China, and the leaders of all three countries had announced retaliatory measures. Don't care what Trump's supporter thinks, as long as he knows that we ain't weak and we can't be bullied then I'm happy.

Then again, Trump has always disliked Turd, and will find every opportunity to bully him (and us). Nobody expects him to be logical in all this.

i saw workers at the liquor store yesterday take 2 shopping carts full of liquor, i thought a business came in and had a huge order, i guess they were gathering up some US brand to 'ban' them.

Trump basically got played by a socialist Mexican woman. She also forced him to admit there's a gun problem at the border, and part of the deal requires the U.S. to stop the flow of guns into Mexico. Talk about taking the L.

Trump has terrible negotiating skills. When he was negotiating with Chrystia Freeland during the last round of the free trade agreement talks, the USMCA, Freeland did not concede to the U.S. anything in terms of duties on Canadian steel and aluminum exports.
He took losses twice to both Freeland and the Mexican president haha.

Delaying by a month isn't a win. We need to end this here and now while we have momentum. Let's hope Trump decides we aren't worth it when he has MX, China and soon the EU to deal with.
Btw, what is going on with USaid? One of the best institutions left in the US is getting locked out because Musk wants their classified data? What a shit show.

USAID has had its share of controversies over the years, and this is all Trump needs to gut it and shut it down.
It's also looking more and more like both Trump and Musk are Russian pawns. Putin just came out today and basically said Europe will ‘stand at the feet of the master’ after Trump’s tariff threats. Even if they're not pawns, this is exactly what Russia has dreamed of, destroying America from within. Destroying Western democracy from within.

I don't agree at all.
Forgetting the whole helping other humans thing, it's a line item and the bottom line is improved because you have less 'boat' people/terrorists/havens for strategic competitors. You are also more like to get the votes you need at the UN.
The ROI is amazing long term.
