Hope's historic Creek Trestle Bridge is in flames due to a discarded cigarette butt Discarded cigarette butt ignites 100-year-old trestle bridge near Hope, B.C. http://images.dailyhive.com/20180529...stle-Creek.jpg Kettle Valley Railway's Ladner Creek Trestle Bridge continues to burn 2 days after fire started The iconic bridge in Hope is up in flames, due to a couple of idiots who thought smoking in a forest would be a good idea. I bet it's one of those #instagramworthy people. This is why we can't have nice things. :rukidding: Quote:
People are shitty. So much for going on a hike to an awesome place. (Please don't be Chinese) |

I see lots of Chinese people hiking all the time. |
Well at least it's only the bridge deck that's made of wood... |

Wasn't it recently when a US judge sentenced some idiot boy $300M+ for causing a wild fire? We need to catch these fxxkers and lay down some hurt so that people know there are consequences. They better turn themselves in... :yuno: |
I don't smoke so I don't know the feeling of this but is it actually that hard to ignore the urge to have a cigarette in a forest? Clearly they must've known it probably wasn't the smartest idea but caved in to their urges. Anyone here smoke? How hard is it to not smoke for a few hours? |
I was a chain smoker for decades. It's not that hard to stop for a couple of hours. Beyond that, I would get the shakes, lol. Haven't smoked for nearly ten years, maybe more. I still get a craving now and then. The scariest part was for a year or two after I quit, I was coughing up some nasty shit. Brown/grey stuff. Quit now guys. And, for those who are thinking of starting, don't. I grew up when smoking was like the norm. Shit was so cheap back then. Now it's like burning money. Good news is, you gonna die sooner, so......... nuff said. /sermon. Back on topic.......... I hope they catch those fokkers and make them pay for the damages. Make them clean up the mess. |
I can't tell you how much I hate smokers who flick their ashes & butts out the window even here in the city streets. But out in the trails and forests ... ??!! Especially when over the past few years, there have been so many forest fires? What do we need, warnings on packages not to drop their butts on campgrounds and forests? Even if they catch the idiots, nothing they can do to punish them enough for their stupidity. |

Was this an accident...? I wish I could start my campfires or my BBQ like that. Just drop a cigarette into my wood or charcoal pile and walk off |
I deal with this every day every summer at work. The landscaping in the parking lot is bark mulch. Everyone drops their fags in it and it ignited within minutes. Like said above. This is why we can’t have nice things. I did 3 hikes this weekend. This one was on my future list :( |
Idk about the rest of the smokers here, but like when I smoke/vape I try to be as responsible as I can - stay away from families, blow away from people/blow with the wind, ash it out real good in the summer. It's not that hard to hold out for a couple of hours. Nevertheless, I wouldn't even smoke in a park where there could be risk of fire. If you really need your nic hit and want to do hikes, buy a vape, bring the vape, stay away from people. Not that hard. I figure irresponsibility has always happened. But c'mon. I set a goal for doing 2 hikes a month for this summer, and this was also on the list :( Side note: Witness should have taken a picture of all of their faces, and if possible and not dangerous, should have followed back to their car and taken down the plate. But I feel like that would lead to an aggressive encounter. |

Plus, chances are, you’re already on their radar.......... the Mounties (RCMP) always get their man. So solly, forgot to include, LGBBQ. The Mounties always get their person/perps. So hard to be politically correct. I mean, LGBT. Always getting it wong. I know, say Liquid Gold Bubble Tea. Got it! |

I had been reading up on this particular bridge/tunnel a couple months ago as a possible hike after watching this flyover of the construction of the Coquihalla. I thought how fortunate it would have been for those pushing the highway through to have encountered this track throughout the valley after being abandoned decades before. |
kinda miss the ol' toll booth |

bud we live in a boreal forest. it happens every year, it has to happen for the forest to regrow. just ignorant people accelerating it and/or making it bigger than it would have been. as it stands there is a $1m fine if they can prove you caused a forest fire. i think it needs to be higher, and include prison time or huge amounts of community service... like helping rebuild homes or planting trees or something... |

Walking smokers are the worst. |

best way i'd say is to go on instagram, try to find any postings of images they may have tagged themselves in with the bridge and you will be able to find them scumbags! |
blaming hashtaginstagram for cigarette fire is like blaming this web site for drifting a Subaru into the curb and not that it matters but go to any of the zoos neary Whistler in August (Elfine, Garibaldi, Joffre) and you will find quite a few Chinese hikers |
