Gas from Washington State

So I'm booked on the Speed Syndicate Track day later this month at the ridge, but last year when I went I noticed they only sell 92 octane in Washington state.

I have a Porsche 996, which says I should be using at least 93. My engine didn't die using 93 last year, but since it's a 996 anything I can do to help it NOT explode is worth doing...

Do I need to add an octane booster or is 92 close enough?

My 996 has been drinking Washington 92 gas for last 2 years. It’s still alive.

Told my tuner that I typically fill up in the states. He told me to run out all the US gas then to fill with CND Chev 94 because the US 92 is better gas which would tune better and might have detonation issues going 'down' to the 94. But that's for boosted twin turbo car could be different for N/A

there's something in our gas, even at 94 octane that boosted cars don't seem to like.

My WRX sees less knock on US Shell 92. it's about the same amount of knock between CND Shell 91 and Chevron 94 for me though for some reason. She likes the ethanol...I've mixed in about 6-8L of e85 into a full tank of 91/94 and gotten similar characteristics to the US 92.

to be serious,

I am not seeing a difference between 89 local versus 92 ARCO on my turbo/supercharged car.

I just filled 92 and put in an octane booster pre-track, then when I had to fill during lunch I brimmed the tank and put it one more octane booster. Cheap insurance

On a somewhat unrelated note, I don't normally fill up at Chevron anymore since their discontinuation of the Save-on-More loyalty program, but I was filling up at their Bridgeport & No. 5 location last week when I noticed they have switched to serving 92 octane gas instead of "just" 91.

Is that happening across the board at all Chevron stations now?

Lol you realize how big of a scam that was don't you?

A 4L jug of milk cost like 3000-4000 save on more points.

And you get 1 point per dollar spent at Chevron. So for every ~$3000 worth of gas you would get a $4 jug of milk.

Fuck save on more points.

LOL~ Yes, of course I know how big of a scam the Save-on-More points program was. My local preference for gas has always been Shell V-Power since it seems to work better on my cars than even Chevron 94 (less knock), but I used to go to Chevron every now and then as well.

Speaking of gas station loyalty programs, lemme post something I came up with recently in another thread...

For my car (FRS/BRZ), there's been data that backs up regarding US 92 > CAD 94 (both Chevron). Of course, your mileage may vary as you have a completely different car. I don't have personal data logs as I've never taken my car to the dyno/tuner but I always fill up with US 92 since I live close to the border lol

I've tracked at Ridge 7 times now and 0 zero issues whatsoever with US 92 as well :P A few other RS members have had more seat time at Ridge than I do and I haven't heard anything from them regarding bad gas

Most gasoline in Washington State has ethanol in it including the 92 octane from Shell.

Could this all be because when car manufactures tune for north american specs, they typically tune their cars against american gasoline, and just assumed that canadian gas is the identical blend (or close enough), in order to save some r&d/tuning cost?

My cars have aftermarket tunes for 91 gas, and they both seem to run better (less knock as measured by datalogging, and feels very slightly more eager to rev) on Shell V-Power than they are on Chevron 94.

When I took my car on a road trip to California after I got back I had engine light for o2 sensors due to their gas. After filling up a couple times back home engine code cleared and hasn’t been back since.
