they have come a long way, but is there still space in the segment?
Spoiler!
I always thought the Veloster was what the CR-Z should've been

under 40k cad and probably no dumb mark-ups like a civic type r

If you’re curious about the N, it stands for Namyang, the location of Hyundai’s R&D centre in Korea. N is Hyundai’s high-performance division — think Mercedes-AMG or BMW M. And there is a big German connection to the Veloster N — it was developed as a collaborative effort between the Namyang R&D centre and Hyundai Motorsport, the Korean company’s race division based in Alzenau, Germany. It’s staffed in part by former BMW M head Albert Biermann, and Thomas Schemera, former head of BMW M’s U.S. branch. Hyundai Motorsport currently leads the WRC drivers’ and manufacturers’ championships, with driver Thierry Neuville at the wheel of an i20 rally car.
The Veloster has been redesigned for 2019 and among other changes, it has shed its trailing-arm rear suspension for an independent multi-link setup, which should get the attention of hot hatch enthusiasts. The N has unique front and rear fascias, spoiler, rear diffuser and LED lights to distinguish it from its non-N counterparts, and the openings in the bodywork are functional — the front bumper openings, for example, are connected to ducts that cool the brakes.
Power comes via a 2.0-litre turbocharged four that develops 275 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. That’s less than the Honda Civic Type R, Ford Focus RS and Volkswagen Golf R, but Hyundai is not interested in engaging in a horsepower war. Rather, it’s opting to tune the chassis for balance and excellent feedback, factors that are emphasized during two fast laps of the Ring. The Veloster N will be available only with a close-ratio, short-throw six-speed manual, which is complemented with a rev-matching function that can be turned on or off via a dedicated steering-wheel button. Power transfers to the front wheels through an electronically controlled limited-slip differential.
How much this supposed to cost? Gti or civic si are about 30k. If it's 40k then that's the price of a golf r, sti or type r. I don't see too many people choosing it over more established performance cars

While a base Veloster N will be available in other markets with 250 horsepower, smaller brakes, and 18-inch wheels, only the hopped-up performance package model will be available in Canada, with no further options or packages, and is expected to come in below $40K.

That's gonna be in a crowded part of the market, unless the chassis is phenomenal or something I couldn't imagine choosing this over a 370Z and having a few grand to spare.

call me boring but i'd rather have a sub-3000 lbs Ring-proven hatch than a 10 year-old gas hog, RWD or not
the Z will probably hold its value much better though if you're gonna resell down the road

I don't think its in the same market.
People who buys a hatch needs the space. Even for a second car, I don't think a 2 seater is practical for me (2 adults and 2 kids in the family)
But yea, if we are talking about 40K rwd coupe.... I mean.. a base 5.0GT is 40K right?

With that roofline it doesn't look to be generous in terms of trunk space, and the opening is tiny for some reason. Like most 2 doors I think the rear 2 seats aren't overly useful anyways, I can't imagine trying to wrestle a car seat in and then before long the kids are too big to fit comfortably back there. Maybe for short drives in town but not much more than that.

I'm just thinking any sporty ~$40k car. You've got the Focus ST, 370Z, BRZ/GT86, WRX, MX-5/124, Mustang and Golf GTI for $10k less, and the Civic Type R, STi, MX-5 RF, 2 series, Mustang GT Premium and Golf R for about the same price. I'm not complaining about more options in the more affordable price bracket I'm just wondering how well it'll do considering the amount of competition.
