im really kind of warming to the corvette. LS moe-ter, relatively low maintenance costs, cheap to buy, and good on gas! whats not to love... especially c7's.

I think they had the Gran Sport last year?

Have you had any test drives in a Corvette, Badhobz?

I've only driven a C5, but have sat in multiple C6, C7 that were driven in anger (at autox / track). The power / torque from the monster engines is totally insane, and ranks right up there with any other legitimate supercar. However, I found the engine characteristic to not really be my cup of tea.

It's really quite odd to describe. I like my cars to be responsive to my inputs, and I am not saying the Corvette is dull or slow with responses, but the engine, in particular, somehow seems lazy to me even though it will deliver brutal bouts of tractable power on command.

As a result of this behaviour, I like and have tremendous respect for those Corvettes, but I can't find myself loving them.

Badhobz 09-18-2018 01:16 PM

Nah Man I've always wanted to try one. I should go visit a Chevy dealer and see if it suits me. I kinda like big lazy v8's ala sc430.

!LittleDragon 09-18-2018 04:06 PM

I've driven 3 C6's and a C7... I love them... I would never buy one because they're totally impractical but I rent them when I go on vacation. Usually in Vegas or California. Over the years, I've rented a Model S, Mustang GT, Camaro SS, AMG C63, etc... but I always find myself itching to rent a Corvette. They're hard to get though, Hertz is always sold out. Sometimes I plan my vacation around when the car is available... lol

V8 fuel mileage isn't something to be afraid of for day to day driving. I get similar mileage in my 5.0 Genesis and my previous 2.0T Sonata... as long as I'm not stomping on it. Day to day driving is under 1500rpm

Got a chance to drive a C7 Z06 at Scenic Rush, even with traction control it can get squirmy but I loved every bit of it.

That day I drove C7, 360, Gallardo, and GTR-black. The non-car nerds where drooling over the lambs and Ferrari as I could not get out of the C7. It's pretty amazing how a brand new Corvette is so much better than supercars from previous years.

I too drove the Z06 through Scenic rush. What got me about the car was the intoxicating sound off the mountain walls. The most fun I had in a car that day.

So many people opt for the R8 instead of the Corvette. I was the only one that asked for the Corvette and the guide said "Ah seems like you're the only one that knows cars" hahahaha

Best Driver's Car isn't about numbers, but we collect them because they tell their own stories and give us a basis for comparison. Every contender is subjected to our standard test regimen to measure acceleration, braking, and road holding in a controlled environment first. Then, it's off to southern Monterey County and California Route 198, an undulating ribbon of asphalt that cuts across ranches and minor mountain ranges. To keep our impressions directly comparable from car to car, we close a 4.5-mile stretch of hill climb east of Route 25 to create a 9-mile up-and-back real-world test track. Not just twisty, it's bumpy, worn, and, in early July, hot as hell. Not just your average handling course, it's a torture test that separates the trailer queens from the all-around performers.

We do this not (just) because it's fun, but because cars spend most of their lives in the real world on real roads, not on tracks. Making a car go around a perfectly maintained track quickly is hard, but making that car go fast up a canyon road and still feel fun and rewarding is harder. A Best Driver's Car has to be at home on your favorite road and your favorite track.

A driver's car is the one kind most likely to see a track day, so from 198 it's up to Monterey proper and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca where pro racer Randy Pobst will find out what each car is really made of. As with the test track, the numbers tell us how any car stacks up against others of the same class, price, or power. Like our test team, though, Randy isn't just a number generator. His insights, along with the test team's impressions, all factor into our final decision.
CTR was so close to podium...it's always more impressive seeing a 35k priced vehicle take on the exotics in the 1/4M range

Surprised to see that the Vette and Stang placed so low.

It's weird so according to the quote above they take it on a fast canyon road thats bumpy and worn. How would the Performante be better than others considering it's the most hardcore Hurracan of them all.

I think you're thinking of Motor Trend's "World's greatest Drag Race"

twitchyzero 09-22-2018 12:09 AM

you look at the new Vantage long enough
it starts looking like a Miata :okay:

Jmac 09-22-2018 12:20 AM

New Miata looks like a snake with a giant smile

shiesty 09-22-2018 11:25 AM

I think the 2019 miatas visually look the same. I think it was mainly a new 181hp engine and telescoping steering wheel

smoothie. 09-22-2018 05:00 PM

Didn’t see S2000 on top

Test is a lie

twitchyzero 09-22-2018 05:39 PM

I don't think the best driver's car showdown dates back to 1999 :troll:

CP.AR 09-23-2018 01:25 AM

Nice to see M5s still making the list but...
NA E60 M5 > All.
NO REPLACEMENT FOR DISPLACEMENT

(and unreliable SMGs :okay:)

I'm also really surprised that the M4 didn't make the list. Aren't M3s/M4s supposed to be the most refined DD-able drivers' cars?

twitchyzero 09-23-2018 12:16 PM

i'm surprised the m2 competition wasn't in this test, guess it wasn't ready for testing in july?

97ITR 09-23-2018 01:10 PM

I, too, am surprised that the M5 was picked over the M2/M3/M4. I believe any of those are better drivers cars. Specifically the M2, that car is fantastic.
