IMO, I would never spend the money to stay in an all inclusive resort because it's boring as hell. Food was never good. You get stale food or food that lacks seasoning, or both.

My best culinary experiences was on of some street paying 12-14 pesos for al pastor tacos.

I also don't understand the allure of staying in all-inclusive resorts just lounging around the beach drinking all day. I guess I'm not that type of traveller myself. It was when I went outside of the resorts (rented a car) where I had the most fun exploring various Cenotes in Cancun and driving to little random places.

I think I prefer your style.

Thanks for all the replies RS, we have decided not to do an all inclusive. If anything, we might just book a flight and hotel and do the local thing. I don't like the idea of paying all that money and feeling bad when we go out of the resort.

A colleague of mine told me because he paid big money for the resort, he didn't want to leave as much, ie. pay for food outside, etc. I would probably feel the same way.

I'd much rather buy food locally and spend time in the local restaurants then to pay money and stay in an all inclusive.

If you're into "Ladies of the night" you won't be able to bring them back to your resort if you're at an all inclusive. If you rent a house or stay at a place that isn't all inclusive you can though.

.. so I've been told.. from .. a friend..

On topic.
all inclusive.... if you have kids, some resorts have really good child minding Do your diligence to review them though.

If I was still childless I would go local. Hostel even...great way to meet fellow travellers that may already know of gems to go to.

Haha, I didn't even think of that.
I'll be with my S.O., so i'll be getting some for "free" anyway. Thanks for looking out.

I found a pretty sweet deal flying with Alaska Airlines. If I sign up for their credit cards, I get 30k alaska miles and a companion ticket for $121 USD.

Now we just need to decide where in Mexico we want to go. Puerto Vallarta or Cancun or somewhere else.

Anyone with ideas?

Puerto Vallarta for sure, way better suited for non-all inclusive type trip.

Tons of food, good nightlife, really cool city to explore. Rent scooters or a car and hit the beaches south of PV down to Boca De Tomatlan and Yelapa.

You won't regret it. Weather is great down there the time of year you're going as well, nice and dry.
