Wechat and Alipay in Vancouver

So I heard that wechat are alipay are starting up Vancouver due to the fact that we are blooming business for travelers from China

Apps like fomo pay has already sign up contract with both parties so they can straight up transfer money with auto exchange rates, plus I'm there are already business in doing this already

I'm wonder if there are any places in Richmond or Vancouver wthat lets u transfer money through wechat for those that don't have it wechat pay, cuz friend wants to transfer me money and its not a lot ($150 cnd which is less then a 1000 rmb)

Don't really want to use the bank as its much easier to just do it through mobile payment

Just install wechat and you can use wechat pay. You don't even have to link your credit card/bank account to accept money.

The money stays in your wechat account and you can use it to give someone money/red bags or buy stuff in China.

This is just a way to attract to the amount of Chinese visitors/residents we get.

Wechat/Alipay are now the mainstream in China... so it'd make sense to accept them here.

Similar to how banks started taking JCB in the 90s.... that's the mainstream card in Japan.

man theyve had wechat pay and alipay for awhile now, was reading some article about it but I've seen the signs for it at Holt and Rosen. Plus a bunch of places in richmond accept it also. You can probably check one of the little stores they probably do the transfer thing.

edit: added article

For most of us, there is no point in using Alipay unless you're travelling to China. Some places in China now don't even take cash, they just have you pay with Alipay since it's faster and safer (in most cases).

Apple Pay Cash is the one I'm looking forward to most. Most of my friends use iPhones so it will be easy to send money to them, although EMT is still the method of choice ATM.

Again you don't need a local China card to use wechat pay. As I don't have any bank card/credit card attach to my wechat account yet I can still receive/send/pay with my account. As long you as you have money in your wechat account is fine.

Wechat pay is good and bad. I mean is easy to use and enable a cashless society. But is hard for tourist and people won't have have it. Also if your phone is stolen people can easily use your money and they can't really track it.

WeChat and Alipay is good. Don't have to touch dirty ass money and it's an instant transaction without any chargebacks or stupid things like that.

Plus, if you master the system you can get a boat load of credit card points.

If you can get friends to deposit/transfer money to your WeChat pay account, then you can spend the amount in your account at stores.

WeChat can also link up your Chinese credit cards or bank accounts so you pay directly from there. I've tried linking up my Canadian cards and couldn't get it to work.

I think what he's saying is that you can use it, however, like you said, you can't deposit any funds into your wallet, unless it's sent to you from someone.

I can send and receive money too, but I just can't load up my wallet.

Not at all. We already have a very robust system with credit cards / PayPal / EMT, so there is really no incentive for typical Canadians to swtich.

There is no incentives for Canadians to switch, and realistically it will never become popular with Canadians but in China, WeChat is like the best thing ever. It's so advanced compared to anything else. Barely anyone uses cash anymore, with would you want to touch dirty money with the slight possibility to receive a fake bill. Deal with coins and change is annoying. With wechat you can pay the granny selling her fruit in a remote village or that masseuse who just gave you a happy ending. It's fast and instant!

Plus you can use it to pay for your metro fares. Just whip out your phone, show your QR code at the turnstile gate and done.

I hope Canada can create something similar but most likely will never happen. Just saying it's so great

it's simple, China only became really developed in the last decade
go look at places like Japan (still predominately cash) and US (chip & PIN only took off few years ago), they're quite behind in credit card/electronic payment solutions
in Canada, I've maybe have to use cash few times a month.Places that are cash only takes debit, almost every other merchant you can tap with your smartwatch.

You cannot pay for things if your WeChat account is not link with an ID

BUT you can use your canadian passport as an ID

AND once you have link an ID once, you can remove the ID and still use WeChat pay

If you have any ties to china you do not want your ID associated with WeChat. Bound it once and than delete your ID. WeChat is heavily monitor by the PRC.

Source: use WeChat pay a lot both in canada and in china
