Best “inexpensive” oil change?
 

Have a few oil changes coming up and I don’t really have the ability to do them myself anymore.

Any recommendations for oil change places? I’ve had a few bad experiences with the “quick” places lately, specifically the mr lube or whatever is is beside the tom hortons on kingsway who broke the screws off my skid plate (why they thought they needed to remove my skid plate to get to the drain or filter is beyond me) and reattached it with zap straps..

Any recommendations for people who kinda know what they are doing? Lol I’d like to avoid the dealership but if the price diff is t that much I guess might as well (although I don’t think the dealerships are that much more competent lol)

believe it or not Walmart isn't too bad... BUT depends on your car.. if its a newer HONDA, they need to do the synthetic blend and is priced about the same as the dealer nowadays.

if its an older honda.. say before 2015, u can get by with their $45 deal or something like that.

Nope, the 9thGenCivic (2012-2015) also runs synthetic.

ah ok.. the 2008 civic didnt need it and got by with the 'el cheapo' walmart changes.

Do lack the physical ability or just the time? If you have any nephews or little cousins or wtv that are getting into cars or stuff, you could always have them change it (with you or under supervision). Chance to help pass the torch and have free child labour

Don’t have a garage or driveway.

Also the location filters on two of the vehicles is a PITA to get at even with the car jacked up

Otherwise I like your idea. I’ll probably change them myself when summer rolls around but for now need it done before full blown winter

is there a place where I can bring oil/filter?
as it's becoming sucha pita to find places that take old oil

i recently took my civic to the dealer because i was lazy as well.. 69$ for a syn change/ type A maintenance.

got a loaner car as well and a free cup of coffee. i was happy

I've been dropping mine off at Mr. Lube after Canadian Tire stopped taking oil.

I've been bringing it to the Burnaby Eco-centre, it's behind the Costco on willingdown

I used to take my Honda to Accutech in Richmond, the owner was a master mechanic at Honda before opening his own shop. I brought my own oil and filter; they're quite busy though.

I use a guy in Richmond named Calvin at General Auto Services... it's a small dumpy place on the road behind Home Depot in Richmond... he's a nice guy, doesn't charge much... I think I did a 5L change on my Lexus IS for $45... I can PM you his number if you want.

I take my mazda3 for 5w20 oil changes to Evolution in Burnaby (off 6th and 18th) and I get charged like 44$

Mobil 1 oil change in Richmond is good, I've been going there the last year. Plus
they have a groupon deal sometimes as well.

hate to say it but if you want it done right, have to do it yourself............there are 2 occurrences where these oil change places cross threaded the oil pan bolt

you have to be pretty incompetent to cross thread an oil pan bolt. Oil changes are literally the simplest thing you can do to your car, it's only a bolt.

One of my pet peeve is over tightening, be it the oil drain bolt or the oil filter.

Tell me about it, I went to get oil changes at Costco with 2 separate cars and cross threaded both.

If I have the time I would do it myself.

Is it cheaper or a better idea (to ensure they are putting synthetic and not some cheap stuff) to buy your own oil for them to do the change?

I too can not access my filter without a hoist or sufficient jacking. I can only imagine these businesses lobbied the car manufacturers to design them this way in order to force more people to pay for oil changes and up-sell them on other services.

it's all about experience i find, I do all kinds of cars without jacking or with minimal jacking height (jackstands on the lowest settings)

One of the toughest car i had to do was a Fiat 500, that oil filter location is....impossible without removing stuff that gets in the way

i ended up doing it myself over a number of years...purchased these tire ramps to make it real easy without jack standing anything up,that just sounds like too much work.

Ended up paying $105 at Infinity Burnaby for G37X

It’s around $80 at most quick places, and the experience at infinity was fine, professional with no upwelling. A little steep but I needed it by the weekend

drain valve doesn't remove sludge

^ why do you have sludge in the first place?

I really wanted to like this product but I bought one a few years ago and it snapped in half while I was tightening it on. I don't tighten that hard, I'm a small guy and I used a 3/8" ratchet.
