portfolio by open road

You pay between $2500 to $3500 a month depending on how long you commit for. You get to pick any car from the 9 brands they have. You can flip cars 4 times a month.

i got invited to the launch of this thing at the openroad boundary audi dealership. after all said and done, it didnt seem like such a good deal to be honest. yeah you can swap your cars around, but why the hell would you need to.. it aint even exotics. Plus at 3k a month, you can actually own an exotic.

Would've been very happy to pay Care by Volvo prices (~1-1.5k a month).

I think I would like to see a plan with less vehicle swaps (maybe once every 1/2 months) at a lower price.
i.e. realistically won't be switching every month, but would switch from Cayman to Cayenne in the winter

neat
even if the prices aren't great, it's nice to have this option (and other local dealer networks may try to compete and bring prices down abit)

This kind of thing is blowing up in the US right now. You guys need to think in terms of everything for it to make sense. The fact you can drive these cars, get in and out of them whenever you want and not be tied to them is pretty great. If you wanted to buy one of these or lease one you would be putting a chunk of change down as a down payment ($$$), likely add warranty ($$$), have to deal with maintenance ($$$) and the one most aren't thinking of, the depreciation ($$$$$$$$$). Add all those numbers together and the fact you can just call them and say "hey, I want a different car today." and one shows up detailed ready to go is pretty cool. For those who change cars often and have the means to do so this would save money and headache.

It still doesn’t make sense, not even financially.... it’s just for ridiculously wealthy people who have short/irresponsible attention spans and like to show off. Pretty sure I know what their target market is here.

Really depends on what kind of vehicles they are offering...
Those "luxury brands" (e.g. Porsche, BMW, Audi) have vehicles that go from under $50K - $300K+

If all they are giving you are cars like Cayman, cayenne, 3/5 series BMW (Basically 40-80K cars), definitely aren't worth $3000 a month.
You can lease 3 of those cars with $3K a month.

If you are getting 911, 6/7/8 series, Benz S-class, etc....it might be worthwhile for the richer crowd
Many of those cars would cost $2000+ a month to own. The flexibility might be worth it for some people.

Don't forget cost of insurance. The fees to transfer and the rates of insurance is determined by the type, year, make and model of vehicle.

Sounds like it's catered more for the well-to-dos rather than the car enthusiast.

No listing of cars available other than "25 fully loaded vehicles" so highly doubt there'd be anything super exotic.

Otherwise this is a pretty sweet program and the price isn't outrageous. I'll just take a different variant of the 911 every single week, please

I wish they do a cheap version of this service. 300-500 a month and can swap between 20-30k cars. I'd try the Rolla, civic, Elantra and then a Sentra or versa all for ha ha's. Then swap to a rav4 Crv for weekends.

I read somewhere most of the cars are over 100k.

I think insurance would be included in the price.

what a dumb idea that will never appeal to me even being financially able. You are essentially doing an expensive rental. This probably appeals to the IT millennials who are raking in all the cash from their jobs (ie ppl who aren't an enthusiast and have disposable income)

It's for people who are rich and don't care about owning a car. something as pretentious as this can only happen in Vancouver LOL

Depending on how successful portfolio turns out to be, maybe OpenRoad will open up something similar for non-luxury makes.

If I'm reading it correctly, this is essentially a ride share service but with more expensive cars and more expensive subscription fees. Insurance, maintenance is included in the subscription fees if I remember correctly.

There is no way you will get a program like this for $300-500 a month with $20-$30K car

The lease cost / depreciation on a $30K car is already $400-$500/month.
On top add in the maintenance, overhead and profit...

They probably need close to $1000/month to break even supplying you with $20-$30K new cars

With my terrible driveway, I tend to shy away from owning nice cars. They degrade so quickly with the gravel. But this is an interesting solution.

Really ?

I've leased a ton of cars for work and I've always been within the 20-30k for under 500 a month tax in. I'm sure dealerships can do better but I guess won't be much profits.

Good luck. Even if there is a 911 I doubt there is more than one. And there is no restriction on how long you can "borrow" it. So someone could be driving it for months, and you still might be on the waiting list to drive it.
And I probably see some numb nuts fill up regular gas instead of premium.

Part of why this works well is that millenials w/ disposable income often times don't stay, or don't know if they're staying in one location or country long enough to warrant owning their own vehicle, even as an enthusiast (speaking for myself).

After shipping, import taxes, registration, dealing with insurance hassles (try getting insurance with a foreign license), costly insurance for pricier vehicles (ICBC is already pretty cheap... especially for younger and less experienced drivers), the final cost is not too different.

Though I need a car in Toronto, Seattle, and possibly in the South Bay area, I'd essentially have to sell it if I moved to SF.
One of my buddy's 1 year old stick shift ride has been sitting in storage for over a year at my place because he did exactly that.

For me at least, the convenience of a subscription outweighs the extra expense - hence my interest in something closer to Care by Volvo pricing.
In the US, an XC40 starts at $650 a month and the S60 is $775 - includes tire/wheel & excess protection, free upgrade after 12 months, and maintenance including wear items like brakes.
In Canada, Care by Volvo can even include winter tires and storage.

who cares if we are not the demo, the list sucks, or it's too expensive?

if a market exists, and there's more options, why wouldn't a network as expansive as OR get a jump on it before everyone else?

esp if we get a post asking how to avoid luxury tax
