it is not just GM..

I work for Stanley.. and they own black and decker / dewalt/ irwin.. lots of lay offs because of what they use in their tools..

Main reason is STEEL and Tariffs.

I have worked in a few unionized positions, both full and part time, and as mentioned the divisive nature created sucks. Every union job I worked had some of the most unhappy and grumbly workers I have ever seen, you walk through the door and it's a constant bitch fest about management this, the union's gonna make them do that, etc.

I'll have to pick that book up, seems interesting.

but good point, soon import brands will be employing more North Americans than domestic brands

Toyota and Mazda about to jointly open a new plant (1.6B USD, ~4000 jobs)
