	        | Class 4 Req. for Ride Share, For/Against? https://vancouversun.com/news/local-...ailing-drivers
So because of recent news, there was a discussion between a few friends about the class 4 requirement. One was arguing that since the ride share drivers are driving the same cars on the same roads they should just have a class 5 requirement.
Given the average driver on the road, the current taxi requirement, and just based off professional expectations and exposure to driving conditions I'm leaning towards class 4 for a higher knowledge and safety standard.
Thoughts?

How do you figure being a Class 4 makes you any safer? All you're doing is passing a driving test just like any other level of license. This iteration doesn't even have the airbrake portion, so the only extra is a pre-trip walkaround of your vehicle. You pass the test and you do whatever you do after.
I mean, seriously, have you seen how taxi drivers drive? You think they had extra safety training above and beyond anyone else? LOL

			You know what this is?
Horgan is funded by the taxi industry, but he also has to make his constituents happy. Sure, Uber will be legal, but it'll be really difficult for Uber to succeed.

I mean, it depends on how it's done.
What if, say, I just want a way that can easily partner me up with someone going to the ferry occasionally? Won't be a frequent thing(especially with the VI drama nowadays), just something occasional that helps me cover some cost of the ferry ride.
I know most people do it as a full-time job for a living, but I wonder if anyone does this as, well, a rideshare, where you just take someone going to the same destination as you.

As soon as they're paying you it's what Uber, etc are... lots of drivers in USA have regular jobs and only sign on for their drive home or when they're out at something and heading back... pick up routes heading the same direction... do exactly what you're saying.

Maybe a class 4 involves a background check, so crazy people can't be kidnapping strangers. After all, ride share users are going to be getting into cars with random people otherwise. It's not like harassment hasn't happened before with ride share users.

A class 4 is a commercial licence, you need it to drive a taxi or limo. I don't see why it shouldn't be a requirement for uber. Why even have the classification of you're not going to enforce it

If they're doing what a taxi does, they should meet the same requirements. Reducing/removing those requirements would be best, but it would be unfair to have different requirements

I voted for requiring Class 4 license to be an Uber driver. You are using your vehicle and your license commercially when you're an Uber driver. Like vitaminG said, what's the point of having a different classification if it's not enforced

With Uber you know who’s picking you up, you know the car and the plate number. Have you ever looked at a plate/car number/drivers name in a cab?

Class 4 rear ended me during excellent driving conditions with dry roads + daylight.

Class 4 is not hard to get and does not involve a background check, go read the icbc website! I actually don’t even know why they bother with that classification it’s no different unless you’re using airbrakes.

class 4 tests are...essentially a joke. I just passed the knowledge test...i had a day off and walked in and did it lol
apparently the road test is the same as a class 5, except they have tougher points?

uber, at its roots, is a carpooling App.
BC government is treating it like a transportation industry.
All this is is a a way to de-incentivize people from participating. Every single rule the government is putting forward is a way to reduce the number of people wanting to be drivers. Exactly the opposite of what the service is intended for.

If terms were too favorable for Uber, they'd likely lose the 8 Surrey seats in the next election.
The BC Liberals made this political mistake last election. https://www.straight.com/news/909061...opularity-uber https://theprovince.com/news/bc-poli...p-and-liberals
Keep in mind the NDP & Greens hold the balance of power by only one seat.
If the proportional representation referendum is successful, I would be very surprised if the NDP didn't relax some of the restrictions they've announced.
Politics aside, I can't see Uber or Lyft planning a launch into Vancouver if the government is going to control the number of rideshare vehicles allowed in each zone in specific times.

Last time I took a cab was over a year ago. I looked at the license and name when I got in.
If you had asked if I wrote down or took a picture of their license or cab number then I would have answered differently. But I do make a note of it when I get in the cab.

If most other places are operating fine without this type of requirement, then at face it seems redundant and at most would only serve to hinder the number of drivers, as mentioned

So ICBC's website says its $40 to take the Class 4 road test. Whats the problem here? With the amount of shitty drivers in the lower mainland I think this is fine.
Anyone who transports the public is required to have a Class 4, Uber/Lyft should not be exempt.
