B58 is a great engine no doubt. But in a car with the named "Supra" it doesn't really fit the bill. Full bolt on's and tune that engine can only reach about 400whp I believe currently.

When I first saw this video I thought "Sounds exactly like a BMW". Then I saw your post and googled what a B58 was haha.
Is anyone else completely uninterested in this car since they've been teasing it for a decade now? And that we've known what it will pretty much look like for awhile now...
Yikes...does this mean high repair bills later on?,they couldn't even design their own engine due to cost,Since when does honda come to ford for a motor?..cause thats how it sounds....okay.
dude it's not 1999 anymore, the s2000 was a one-off celebration for honda to flex their guns
no one's gonna build a sports car motor unless you have serious racing programmes like Ferrari or Porsche
this is similar to the 124/MX-5 platform, 99% same chassis, but different powertrains. The MX-5 doesn't really have a bespoke engine (Mazda3), nor does the 124 (Alfa Giulietta)
honestly though, they already have the Supra. Well its luxurious/futuristic....a toned down LFA
tone the LC500 further down with a 6-cyl, make it no frills and call it a day!

Man so many people whining about things they'd never even dream of buying
I for one welcome the sharing of motors and applaud Toyota's choice to go to the legends of straight-six to do so. I'm curious as to how the motor/trans tuning will feel compared to the Z4. Maybe I'm getting old but I feel as though we should consider ourselves fortunate that manufacturers are still bothering to remember us little people, the enthusiasts, and are making an effort to make these things actually desirable (versus slapping on a TRD or ST-Line badge with a bunch of aero mods and coloured leather stitching).
Having owned a tragically unreliable E90, the one thing I will never despise is how buttery smooth the motor was.
Though I will admit, I'm more curious about the rumours stirring up about an MR2 revival, considering that the new 8AR-FTS is essentially a modern 3S-GTE with great potential already shown from tuning and turbo swaps if they do choose to use that motor...

Toyota has a wealth of history with inline-6 engines as well, they should have made their own instead of using that BMW piece of crap.
Yes I realize there's development costs... but I dare say not many people are going to buy this car... and when the engines start taking a shit... which they will... it hurts Toyota's rep bigtime.

I wouldn't say I am whining simply for the sake of whining. Way back when the FT86 concept debuted, it has never crossed my mind that I would be interested in a newer vehicle (I was already driving a mildly modified sports car that I enjoyed at the time.) But when the concept car showed up, I was enamoured by the possibilities it offered -- namely the 2+2 sports coupe platform with an attractive exterior. A successful concept car / preview model would have the power to do that -- wow a potential customer that wouldn't even have thought of purchasing the car, and plant an interest in the product so that the potential customer would eventually execute on the purchase.
I have been craving to get into a higher hp sports car -- something in the 300+ hp range -- for some time now, and the Supra initially came up as a potential candidate. But as soon as I found out that Toyota was teaming up with BMW on the project -- esp the drivetrain bits -- its appeal dropped down on my list. And when it was confirmed that it is basically taking the Z4's engine, my interest in the car dropped to zero. Japanese relaibility would have been the strong suit and primary attraction of the Supra to me. But if I were only getting a BMW instead -- basically the most unreliable German manufacturer in my books -- I might as well go straight to a German car instead.

I can understand Toyota's hesitation in developing their own engine. For them to justify the R&D costs, the engine has to be at least deployable to more than 1 niche vehicle. Nothing else in the Toyota line would work, and their Lexus portfolio probably couldn't justify the amourtization either.
Mercedes has recently developed a new inline 6 as well, and I feel like Toyota would have been better served had they approached Mercedes instead of BMW. Toyota's greatest strength in a typical consumer's mind is their reliability. Risking that with BMW "reliability" is a wrong move and a bad move in my eyes.
If you want a Manual MKV Supra, buy a M2 or M2 comp. I started saving up many years ago for the MKV at the expense of putting money in big power mods for my MK4. Which in hindsight was a good decision. I've made my choice to lease a used F80 M3 6MT with warranty instead of disappointment that is the MKV. The M2 is probably closer comparison to a MKV, but can't beat the 4 door practicality of the M3. If the M2 is like a Supra, then I guess the M3 is more like a Chaser or Mark II.
B58 coolant loss, pump failures, squeaky pumps are happening to cars as low as 10,000km. I can just imagine Toyota techs bitching comes time for warranty.
I dreamt of a Yamaha 3JZ that makes 500hp stock and 800 on stock internals. Mated to a Getrag or aisin 6MT capable of holding 1000 hp. And the thing will run for at least 30 years long after the chassis has rotted away.
