Do 89 and 91 prices vary between stations?
 

I usually fill up gas without really looking at the price, but the other day I realized the other day how big of a difference mid-grade and premium gas was. It was something like regular + 15cents for 89, then 15 more cents for 91 or something. Are some gas stations cheaper than others for 89 and 91 prices or do they always have the same markup from regular?

iirc it's 15-16c from 87-94 at chevron.
i think it's like 3-5c per grade, give or take a couple c?

From my own observations, between regular (87 octane) and premium (91 octane), the price difference has usually been around 18 - 20¢, depending on the price of the regular gas. At Shell, however, that price difference is ~22 - 25¢.

I'm not really sure how 89 octane gas is usually priced. When I filled up this past weekend, it was a 10¢ difference between each grade.

In my areas, at least, it always seems to me that the prices of 89 and 91 gas are not very up-to-date, so I can't really rely on them as good info.

The last few times I actually looked at the price difference, Chevron 94 is 22 cents more than 87.
Not sure if it's always 22 cents or just a coincidence every time I check.

As for price consistency, there has been cases where I would see the same brand gas stations with different prices within 10 mins drive apart. Unless you're really desperate, probably not worth "shopping" around stations for the best price. In most cases, you end up just wasting more time than it's worthwhile, and the price between the stations could end up just being the same anyway.

Shell 91 always seems to be more expensive than other premium 91. I have no real evidence to back this statement up.

Around here 87 is usually pretty consistent but I've seen massive variations (as much as $0.10/L) between stations for 91 just around town. When I was needing 91 I used Gas Buddy every time I filled up.

You are not imagining things. Shell charges more for their V-Power gas than other companies do for their 91 gas.

Unfortunately, my cars prefer Shell V-Power over other 91 octane gas. The engine just runs smoother and revs better with it.

I feel locally the mark-up for 89/91 should be relatively the same.
I do have an experience in the states where I gassed up at a Shell in Blaine at say 3.50/gallon and got a X gallons of 92. I would then gas up again at another Shell 30 miles away in some rural small town and it would be 3.60/gallon and I would get more gallons of 92 for the same amount of money. I suppose they mark it up according to the demand of premium fuel in each area and how much they sell.

Shell 91 definitely feels more expensive than Petrol/Esso/Chevron 91. I fill up at Petrol Canada mostly and it's a 12-13c difference between 87 and 89, and a 7-8c difference between 89 and 91. Shell seems to be about 11-12c difference between each grade.

You guys know if v power 91 is still pure gasoline and not a ethanol blend ? My local shell station on Garden city removed those stickers that says how much ethanol is in each grade.

Shell 91 is different from other brands 91, technically speaking it's closer to Chevron 94 (which is why it costs more than other 91). I can't remember the exact details but it's in a thread on here somewhere. So if your car calls for 91, get 91 anywhere but Shell. If you need 94, get Chevron 94 or Shell 91.

Typically Shell has their 91 priced similarly to Chevron's 94.

I only run Shell 91 as well.

I also run Shell 91 or chev 94 in a pinch. I get too much knock with other brand 91 for my liking.

its funny OP started this thread cause i filled up at shell the other day and noticed the 91 was creeping up on the 30 cents over regular instead of the normal 20-25 cents over.

On the Island, it is, so I can't imagine things being too different in mainland.

I have the opposite experience with most. My car doesn't like Shell 91 and works better with Chevron 91. I usually get (even more)abysmal gas mileage on Shell 91.

Are there cars that actually have OEM recommendations for 89? I thought it was usually either regular or going to premium.

I always felt 89 was the option for people who are too cheap to go with premium or for those who have regular cars but believe in urban myths on how adding high octane will give them increase HP but are still on a budget.

Rams with the Hemi have a recommendation for 89. I always put in 87 though. A 120L tank takes a lot of filling.

Way back when I was 16, my driving instructor told me that he puts 89 octane gas into his instructor car (an E90 Corolla) because it does a good enough job of eliminating knock. With regular gas, he said the engine was knocking too much.

The pump I filled up at yesterday said no ethanol.

This morning at Husky:

13 cents from 87 to 89
7 cents from 89 to 91

Some bikes and gas powered equipment (lawnmowers, chainsaws, etc) require 89.

Does anyone know if Mobil1 (superstore richmond) is still 91 no ethanol? They removed the stickers on this as well, and I used to fill up at superstore when they had the sticker for 91 no ethanol

Just head down to bellingham for filling your tanks with two bulk containers! Have some food before you come back because the "F__king" customer (Canada) will bother you a "ONLY FOR GAS" question !
