I was a huge Canuck's fan since I moved here in the 80's I used to go to as many games as I could I'd watch every game I could obviously I knew who every player was not only on the Canuck's but every other team in the league.

After the last strike I said I was done, the owners and the players had pissed me off so much I said I'd never watch another hockey game in my life at any level. I kind of followed how they were doing but never watched a game out of spite.

This whole no sports thing has intrigued me a bit, I watched my first game in I don't know how many years when they were playing the Wild last week. I guess that makes me a bandwagon fan sort of? Lol, if it wasn't for pandemic I 100% would not give a fuck about the playoffs but I'm just desperate for something to watch. I don't even know who 2/3's of this team is, forget about the other teams.

I can see where you’re coming from big time quasi... I watched a video on the work the trainers and stuff are doing behind the scenes in this bubble and it’s insane they’re going like 24 hours a day and all they talk about is the sacrifices of players being away from their families these guys play 2.5 hours of a game (and less than 25 minutes in most cases) and live in luxury their equipment is lined up for them everyone treats them like gods... and why? Cuz they’re good at a game?

I‘ve always loved hockey and I follow the team pretty closely but I’ve learned hockey doesn’t give a shit about any of us and if someone wants to go out or loved ones want to do something I don’t “have” to watch the game......... and if sports wasn’t around I don’t think society would be overly affected in the long run. I don’t think being a hockey player changes the world in any way.

I am with quasi 100%. Anyone my age knows how popular hockey cards were in the early 90's. That's actually what got me into NHL in the first place (I watched my best friend play a lot of hockey but I wasn't a "fan" until later)

But the combination of the heartbreak of 2011 and then the lockout of 2012-2013 turned me off so much that I just dropped it completely. I picked up Formula 1 and NFL after that, and stuck with NFL big time.

I got back into it again for these playoffs just because the timing has worked out. It's been enjoyable so far, but if they get so greedy again to just stop the game, I'm ready to drop them again.

Calgary player sort of kicks the puck into a Dallas player's skate, and it bounces off and goes in. Refs called it a no-goal despite it not being towards the net. I wish I knew the actual rule

This is the rule from the NHL rulebook. Rule 55:

The rule states: Kicking the puck shall be permitted in all zones. A goal cannot be scored by an attacking player who uses a distinct kicking motion to propel the puck into the net. ... A puck that deflects into the net off an attacking player's skate who does not use a distinct kicking motion is a legitimate goal

In other words, it does not matter if the kicking motion is not being directed towards the opposing goalie's net. The Calgary player used a kicking motion to kick the puck. The puck deflects off the Dallas player's skate into the net.

That kicking motion is not allowed no matter the direction of the kicking.

So if you kick it towards a teammate and they shoot it in, it doesn't count?

Seems weird

Dallas has fallen apart completely, they'll be lucky if Calgary doesn't tie it up here

The rule states: Kicking the puck shall be permitted in all zones. A goal cannot be scored by an attacking player who uses a distinct kicking motion to propel the puck into the net. A goal cannot be scored by an attacking player who kicks a puck that deflects into the net off any player, goalkeeper or official.

No, read the rule again. Rule 55 states a player using a kicking motion that kicks a puck that deflects into the net off any player, goalkeeper or official.

A deflection
.

You are describing a different scenario in which a player kicks a puck to a team mate. The team mate shoots the puck in with a stick. -not a deflection. The scenario that you describe in involves a player kicking a puck, to pass the puck to a teammate. Team mate shoots the puck into the net off his stick. That goal would count under the NHL rule book because of the shooting motion from a hockey stick propels the puck into the net.

I think I stopped caring after they had two 1st round exits in a row. I'd watch highlights here and then and follow the signings and prospects, but don't watch the games.

Like Skinny I recently picked up F1 instead. The politics behind the scenes in F1 is actually a surprisingly good show.

Maybe I'm one of the few who stuck with it no matter how bad it got since 2011. Still heartbroken like the rest of you but watching the Sedins' final games was incredibly special. Watching Bo become Captain after years of hard work was great and now watching this exciting new core develop so quickly has been a real treat. Win or lose, this is my team and I will watch no matter what happens.

Ouch, they lost Tkachuk on the play, Brodie got wacked in the face, AND a disallowed goal.

This young group of Canucks is SO easy to root for. I think they'll gain a ton of fans if this run goes for a decent amount of time.

I've been following Canucks since 94. The two quick exits in 2012 and 2013 were crushing blows. But the part that snapped me was the Luongo Heritage Classic snub. I felt the whole organization and management were falling apart. I had to take a break.

I still continued to follow the team as in major roster updates and the overall standings, but I couldn't get into watching them play anymore. It was also a combination that I got older, had more responsibilities in life and just generally got busier. Spending 2.5 hrs to watch hockey every other night is a lot of time I couldn't afford.

I unfortunately missed 2015 Playoffs since I was on vacation, so it's actually been a very long time since I've watched Caunck Playoffs. The past 2 seasons, I just started watching condensed highlights on "Don't Tell Me The Score" (http://www.dtmts.com/) which were satisfying to me. Long 8-10min clips full of scoring chances and goals without spoiling the outcome beforehand. To me, it felt like I could still enjoy a mini version of the game with similar excitement (without knowing the outcome) and not "wasting" 2.5 hours of my life. I haven't sat down to watch a full regular season game in years...

But I'm still a fan at heart and always will be. I think this whole time, I was just waiting for Canucks to have a shot at the cup (even if it's a slim chance) before I get excited again. So here we are, and I've been pretty pumped and watched every minute since the Qualifiers.

That being said, I'm not sure if the popularity is dying or if other fans likewise are just tired and waiting for a playoff team to get excited again. On Instagram, I saw a video with a bunch of people honking their horns and gathering at an intersection with their Canuck jerseys celebrating like it's the SCF or something. lol

i feel a lot of fans are kind of in the same boat. Combination of 2011 blues and subpar on ice product and busy lives turned most people into casual fans. I for one has also been the same. 2011 was like a heart ripping breakup with the girl to be. I haven't watched a full game since but I did take advantage of being a 1/4 season ticket holder this year due to lower prices but I sold off majority of the tickets. Even game 1 vs Blues I missed the middle half of the game and took my dog out for a walk. But I am definitely more excited this year in general than past seaons. I think my wounds have healed and I'm ready to see what this new roster can do

I never stopped per say since I don't know like 1990. The only reason I slowed down hard from 2014 - 2018 was due to having a kid. The last 2 years have been better since he's older so I've gained more time to actually sit and watch a full game rather than 1-2 min increments here and there. I will watch until I die, likely.

I watched religiously between 1990 and 2011. Would go to 4 to 5 games a year. Moved to Toronto right after the SCF heartbreak and didn't have cable - so I only watched a few games here and there online.

Didn't really get back into watching them when I moved back to Van either. Team was on a downward spiral, not inspiring. Started watching again in 2017. Went to my first live game at Rogers Arena in October 2019 since Game 2 of the SCF against Boston. The arena sure changed over the past eight years! Metal detectors??

These playoffs are finally getting me excited again! I know they prob won't win the cup, but at least it is entertaining.

2011 will always be a gaping wound for the rest of my life. There have been few rides like that for any team in the modern era in the NHL and when you lived through those hawks early round losses to finally overcome them and realize your potential only to lose in game 7 it was a crushing blow

Vancouver has a huge portion of fair weather fans who don’t really know much about hockey but will go to a game to post on IG etc.

I think if this was a regular season and we were still going to games etc. The whole city would be on board once again, there’s nothing like game 1 of the playoffs when you haven’t been there for an extended period of time. I feel bad for players like Petey and Hughes who didn’t get to experience that atmosphere of game 1 at home

I've always thought Round 1 was the best hockey in general ... just seems more intense for some reason, of course not withstanding SCF. Round 2 and on gets more boring, less teams, more wait in between games, etc.

I think I’ll have an infinitely harder time getting over 2011 compared to any other season. That Canucks team had EVERYTHING going for them that entire season. An absolutely stacked team that played as a winning team. The team was tops or top 3 in almost every single statistical category that mattered.

1st in GF
1st in GA
1st in PP
3rd in PK
1st President’s Trophy
Lu & Schneids won the Jennings
Daniel won the Lindsey and Art Ross
Kesler won the Selke
Gillis won GM of the year
Most road victories
Longest road winning streak

Yea, for me as well I had been telling friends/family leading up to 2011 that they were building a cup contender and this was a team that could do it, and finally people who were the typical “haters” were getting on board as they were seemingly getting better and better on the run

Only to lose in game 7 and hear the typical “of course they lost” comments from the same people
