That's good ... don't see why our tax dollars should subsidize people who can afford new EV's.

Just a heads up for the Model 3 buyers, although the government's website says that 'vehicles purchased before 6/22 would be under the old incentives', it's kind of misleading.
You need to have a VIN before 6/22 to be under the old incentives, and Tesla doesn't provide a VIN until you take delivery, so even if you ordered before 6/22 you won't qualify if you're buying a Model 3.

And on Reddit there already are a few upset buyers that'll now have to fork out an extra $2k cause Tesla wouldn't register the vehicles until delivery date

There are better ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while simultaneously reducing traffic congestion and poverty.
People who can afford $55k cars don't need a tax break. Consumer demand for EVs is at an all-time high and increasing, the industry is sinking tons of money into R&D for EVs, and we already have a provincial mandate for EV sales heading into the future. Subsidies for the upper-middle/upper class so they can continue to add the same number of single-user vehicles to an already congested traffic grid seems like a poor way to spend tax dollars.
Why not incentives for carpools? Public transit? Telecommuting? Bicycles/e-Bikes/e-Scooters? These make way more sense to me.
Getting vehicles off the road improves everyone's fuel efficiency.

^ exactly ... incentive for early adapters 3-5 years ago was good strategy. Now that the idea of EV has caught on, no longer necessary. All of your suggestions are better ideas.
As for those who failed prev post ... must be part of the entitled upper middle class.
Wait for it ... when the gov't announces reduction in subsidy to put a high voltage charger in your garage, the whining will continue.

federal incentive is sub 45k...i agree the BC one is set too high...77k dafuq
scrap-it is in place to help reduce some gas guzzlers
public transit is already subsidized quite generously
as is bike lane/bike share
who wouldn't wanna get rebates for 'working' at home, you could also argue those who need tax breaks the most aren't able don't have that luxury
i agree carpooling should be encouraged with incentives, not sure how that'll get tracked

I was an early adopter of the technology, never an adapter, gulolol.
Not all EV owners who “adapted” to using the technology is entitled. Not all EVs are 50k. With the incentives, my EV set me back 20k. Although it has Navi and shit, it is plain Jane. None of the bells and whistles. The range is not great, but for commuting, you can’t beat it. If it weren’t for the incentives, I would find it difficult to adapt to having to charge the thing. Lots of positives, though. No gas, oil changes, timing belt, spark plugs, filters, etc. It’s quiet and has oodles of torque.
If the government wanted everyone to adopt the technology, they need to push the manufacturers to build more affordable EVs. Ones that are designed for the masses. Lowering the cap on incentives would work.
I talk with anyone and everyone who’s at the charging stations. There was this one fellow in a Hyundai Kona. He let me sit in one. Jesus Mohammed Ali, it was so cool. It cost 60k. Plus, he had to pay luxury tax, lol.
I love my EV. It’s not for everyone. Lots need to be done before it really takes off. Continue the scrap it programme and work with the manufacturers to make EVs affordable, and ensure that there is a better infrastructure in place for charging.
The subject is more complicated than most people think. I have a charger at home. Spent tonnes of money on it. I adopted the technology because I really like the fact I’m not contributing to the harm we are doing to the environment.
Also, I don’t care what some of you fokkers say. god bless. /sermon

Honestly, I think it's a sense of change in expectation. But any EV owner who buys qualifying vehicle is still getting an 8K subsidy. Not sure why the complain.
Nevertheless, BC government really was too harsh on the change and what they were saying in the statement does not match with what happens on retail level.
The statement says any vehicle purchased (hence already applied for the rebate) OR reserved is still entitled to the old discount. However, the term "reserved" is fucked up.
Taken at face value of the statement, basically if you can prove that you reserved the car PRIOR to 22nd, you were entitled to the old rules as that's what's expected. However, what BC gov't really meant was that the dealer HAD to have submitted the paperworks to RESERVE the FUND in order to qualify to old rules. Thus it basically shut all dealerships (including Teslas) of old rules if they didn't already submit the paperwork.
For people in the know, that's no big deal. But from a consumer perspective, it sucks because the way they understand is, when they signed the ok/put down a deposit... etc, they already RESERVED the car.
I'd go as far as saying that some consumers might take BC gov't to small claim court because they didn't make this new announcement clear at all. And there's a good chance for one winning the lawsuit if they actually bothered given the wording in the announcement. No where does it state "fund" reservation, but just "vehicle".

I failed you because that's the whole point of taxes -- to subsidize initiatives.
I don't see why i need to pay taxes to subsidize people who can afford medical attention
I don't see why i need to pay taxes to subsidize people who can afford schools
I don't see why i need to pay taxes to subsidize people who can afford transit
etc...
Some things you agree with how they allocate the money, some things you don't. (for the record, i just about disagree with everything the gov't spends our taxes on ... fuk'n crooks)
I'm one of the many many many 10s of thousands of people who bought an electric car on 1 May due to the extra federal incentive. If there wasn't one, i would've bought another gas car. I am the prime demographic for what the gov't is trying to achieve.

Looks like the government's going to offer the full rebate to the people that ordered before 6/22, but picking up after that date. Sucks for the guys that refused delivery the morning of 6/22 though... https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/briti...ates-1.5188269 |
