The soup assault was definitely over the top (especially here in Canada) but the unwillingness to share the table is a bit of a cultural phenomenon that hasn't really sorted itself out here. In my travels to Asia, it was very normal to share tables/seats with strangers. Here - not so much. It just depends.

Crystal Mall is neither here nor there.

Lot's of people actually. I used eat there and you woulnd't believe the number of people taking 4 seats table for only 2 people and saying no when you ask to share. Mostly girls say no though the guys don't really care when I ask.

Remind me not to throw soup at you.

In all seriousness, table sharing is a bit of a coin toss based on personal experiences in Canada. You got to Costco and want to grab a hot dog and share a table with someone, they will either say yes, or no, or tell you the seat is saved for someone. Whether legitimate or not, we don't know. And then you go to some place like Crystal Mall, located in a metropolitan Canadian city, but the place feels like Asia in a way. And then you have overly entitled turds who won't share a table, and get soup dumped on them. So confusing, lah!~

I've had people sitting down at my table at Crystal Mall without asking. Sometimes it is just me sitting at a table of 2 or 4. One time it was me and the wifey sitting at a table of 4. Of course I am not surprised, but I'd at least think that the person / party should ask first out of common courtesy.

From my own experience, I'd say the asking / not asking ratio at Crystal Mall is more like 50-50. Other Chinese places like Aberdeen Center and Parker Place food courts don't really have that kind of sitting-down-without-asking type of thing though. From my experience, it has only happened at Crystal Mall food court.

It also must be a cultural thing to call the police.
Try that at Guildford and the last thing you're going to hear before getting your head smashed in is "Worldstar!"

Then this.....

Lol whut? Western values?? Dude have you ever stepped foot in a Costco? People of all creed be knockin’ Polish weiners together happily sharing tables. I remember going to the old Richmond centre or Landsdowne mall to buy Pokémon cards and waste time in toys-r-us, no one has ever put up a stink sharing a table

Soup assaults in addition to the terrible parkade design at Crystal mall. Spiral of death for the fools who choose to park their vehicles in that awful parkade.

Take transit or park your ride on the street if you visit Crystal Mall, Aberdeen or any Chinese mall to avoid grief from the awful drivers in those sorry ass parkades. This food court assault is the just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to bad things at this mall.

I remember sharing tables in Metrotown decades ago when it'd get really busy, was quite common back then (before they made the new food court)

Both were stupid

Hot soup/water can really burn, remember my ex spilled hot water accidentally on my clothed arm and I still got a boil from it

i've only seen it happen in food courts here

in malyasia or hong kong it happens in restaurants

i'm sure if our density increased another 3 folds it'd become the norm here too

Ya, this. Like Quasi, I'll call myself for what I am - a 100% honkey And I say score 1 for the old guy! Ok, I dont condone pouring hot soup on someone, that's dangerous, but go to any Costco on a weekend and people of all races are happily sharing tables. Go to the PNE or a hockey game, or the Stampede, or a Jay's game and people are happily sharing tables. THAT'S the western values I was raised with while eating in a public place.. if it's busy, you scoot over and make room.

The women acted souper bad and refused to share a table, then literally got "served". Sorry, I couldn't resist.

I will say though, this is funny and reminds me of the punch out in the dim sum restaurant parking lot. Xiao long bao is obv worth dying over

As a shanghainese man I must agree that Xiao Long Bao is worth dying for hahahha. Especially if they taste like home. Ding Tai Fong where the fuck are you in Vancouver ?!?

P.s. a pretty decent XLB place that has a good taste of home is actually that Shanghai place in the Aberdeen food court. Also tried their pan fried pork buns, taste just like home.

Not shangahi-nese, but I found DTF quality of food pretty mediocre for the price point (convert to CAD). What do you think about Top Shanghai Cuisine in the Ackroyd plaza?

It's okay, the chef ain't shanghainese. Best shanghainese place by far is on Kingsway. Owned and operated by a shanghainese couple same age as my parents. The husband is the head chef and he worked in a few famous restaurants back home.
His flavors are very much what we eat back home and prices are reasonable. Try their pan fried eel and xlbs. Delicious.
