James Bond - replaced by... ....

... hmmm ... I don't know what to make of this.. i get that female leads are growing in numbers but this franchise was all about the sauve, masculine male?!

While Daniel Craig is set to reprise his role as James Bond in the next film, the franchise is set for a shake-up, with reports claiming that black British actor Lashana Lynch has been cast as 007 – taking over Bond’s secret agent number after his character leaves M16.

The Mail has quoted from an anonymous “movie insider”, who says that the 25th film opens with Bond (Craig), retired in Jamaica, being called back to action to fight a new villain.

“There is a pivotal scene at the start of the film where M says, “Come in 007”, and in walks Lashana who is black, beautiful and a woman,” the source said. “It’s a popcorn-dropping moment. Bond is still Bond but he’s been replaced as 007.”

Originally from West London, Lynch, 31, made her film debut in 2011’s Fast Girls, but her breakthrough role came earlier this year, as fighter pilot Maria Rambeau in Captain Marvel.

The news of her being given Bond’s famous code name has been widely praised on social media, coming weeks after US singer Halle Bailey was cast as Ariel in Disney’s live action remake of the Little Mermaid.

“(The franchise) has just got to grow. It has just got to evolve, and the important thing is that the film treats the women properly. He doesn’t have to. He needs to be true to his character.”

However, Bond producer Barbara Broccoli has said that there would “never” be a female Bond, despite efforts to update the character.

I’m over this whole “we have to include everyone!” Mentality. James Bond is James Bond. Why not just make a NEW intellectual property with a black female lead as a spy. Why does it have to be Jane Bond.

Edit: can’t wait for her lesbian scene, because you damn well know she won’t be straight either #lgbtqia+

Hollywood, specifically financiers aren't going to back a film that's an unknown property without a built in audience or a well known director or actors attached to it. Reason Marvel movies work. Reason why we're getting these reboots every 10-15 years. Hollywood will jump on a trend and keep milking it, currently its the METOO and the LGBTQ(*&@%*^@^ , hence the All Female or gender swapping lead roles from existing movies ala Ghost Busters and Oceans 8. Don't be surprised to see an all female Fast and Furious or an all Female Avengers movie in 2-3 years.

Except Ghostbusters and Oceans 8 both bombed in large part because it was virtually impossible to live up to the expectations set by the originals (or, in Oceans 8's case, the most recent reboot featuring Clooney).

Bond is a little different in the sense that "007" is not a single person but an agent who has been replaced many times over throughout the decades, so going with a different race and/or gender bond isn't that farfetched, but I still feel like this is going to bomb.

This is the thing. You are totally correct that Bond can be *anyone* unlike Ethan Hunt who has to be Tom cruise. The issue comes in when it becomes politicalized, and clearly it’s already begun.

What they have to do is just flat out make a new James Bond with a female lead or whatever, call no attention to it and make her badass like Sarah Connor. Keep the action raw and brutal. Don’t make it cartoony like when the women fight in marvel movies. Just release it with an “it is what it is, deal with it” attitude and those mouthbreathing neckbeards won’t care.

I wasn't saying that it worked, the success of Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel show that there can be female leads as long as there is an already established audience and if the movie is actually good story, plot, character development etc etc. Oceans 8 and Ghost Busters just replaced the men with women and thought they could sell tickets and half ass the movie. i have a feeling this is a latter issue where the "Bond 25" movie is ass and they're throwing in a gender swap to hide it and sell tickets. Craig thought Spectre in 2015 would be his last movie he had that famous quote about cutting his wrists then play Bond again. There's already "creative differences" in Bond 25 with the former director and the writers and producers.

Quote:

Beasts of No Nation director Cary Fukunaga was taken on in September 2018 to replace Danny Boyle, who unexpectedly dropped out in August after “creative differences” with the producers and 007 star Daniel Craig. ... Bond 25 was originally scheduled for release in autumn 2019 but was pushed back to February 2020.Feb 19, 2019

This. I can't find it but I recall an interview where Denzel Washington was asked about the lack of black roles in hollywood and his answer was simple, If you want rolls for black actors write the story. I'll try to link it when I get home.

This idea of shoehorning race/gender rolls into existing IP isn't fixing any problem if there is one.

GS8 07-15-2019 03:16 PM

This is what happens when you pander to a vocal yet minority group of self-absorbed nihilists. The entertainment companies don't even try to hide the fact because they WANT the social media bukkake.

And then they wonder why theater turnouts are dropping? The majority of western society assumes that all men and women are equal but don't like it being shoved down their throats. This majority group of people also doesn't spend 90% of their lives on Twitter, complaining nonsensically from ironically privileged positions in life. This diametric skews public perception.

Just make a damn good movie and people will flock. Politicize, and they walk away. People want to turn their brains off and be entertained. That's the whole fucking point of watching a movie.

EDIT: And a highly rated movie typically wakes your brain up and makes you think after the fact. That's called movie-making and it used to be an art form.

Right, James Bond is James Bond, a 007 agent. The new character is a new character, a different 007 agent.

IMO James Bond, as a character, is outdated and dull. There are plenty of books and movies to look back on and enjoy, but there's nothing wrong with going forward with something more modern now. Be it a man or a woman, black or white, the whole James Bond thing is played out and I'm all for change SeemsGood

Hondaracer 07-15-2019 08:52 PM

I don’t really care about the whole thing, but imo this is likely the end of the franchise, at least for a while

I can’t wait for a female superman. Not to be confused with supergirl

StylinRed 07-15-2019 09:51 PM

In the Bond movies, we've had other 00 agents

007, is James Bond

They should just have her as another 00 agent
buuut I just looked it up, it seems in the story, multiple spies have held the same 00 title 1,2,3,4,5,6, even 7 not just James Bond so /shrug

Quote:

00 agents are elite special operatives of MI6 who have a discretionary 'Licence to Kill' in the field in order to complete their mission. Standard mandatory retirement age is 45 though various writers including Ian Fleming, Sebastian Faulks and John Gardner have contradicted this as a matter of Poetic License. Although Fleming only mentioned five 00 agents, others have been added over the years across various franchise media.

James bond did change, from Pierce B who kept on doing 007 roles and just got EPIC fed up cause of the wtf scripts; he left.

Now we got daniel who is like buff as fuck, gets captured and tortured... and don't get me started with the lack of gadgets and cars with crazy toys... totally not the traditonal bond.

I had my doubts with Daniel but seriously, the 1st one came out and it was so raw that we all really enjoyed it.

importantLS 07-16-2019 08:31 AM

I was actually hoping for Idris Elba to be the next Bond. Who know's might just be another Daniel Craig James Bond movie because it does say he gets called back to face a new villian. Possible for the new 007 to die early...

Berzerker 07-16-2019 09:23 AM

He's still James Bond, he's just not 007. What the hell is the problem?

Berz out.

I would've liked it if they did this when they rebooted with Daniel Craig. Some of them have been okay films but they've been shit as Bond films imo.

They've been doing this with a lot of things in recent (ish) years. Take an existing franchise, keep the genre and nouns, change everything else and spew out bastardized garbage to make as much money as possible. Repeat until everything people loved when they were younger is trashed.

As for this, since in the past a different actor didn't mean the character James Bond was a different person this seems more like a spin off in a way, but since they've rebooted things anyways it doesn't really apply. It does come across as a little forced and patronizing, that could just be the reporting though.

I was all in for Idris Elba.............

I dont' care what colour Bond is... but damn he/she should maybe be uhm... good looking? I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but I'm not personally feeling it here. She ain't no Halle Berry.
