How do you manage a 3rd vehicle?

So ... we have 2 vehicles..both relatively new 2016 and 2017. both 100% paid off.

I want to get a 3rd vehicle just as my weekend machine in a 6MT (the other cars are autos and bore me).

do you :

1. de-insure one of the cars and insure the 3rd?
2. keep all insured so to have variety and/or use what is needed?
3. what type of insurance? i wont drive this during the winter - how does ICBC handle the short term insurance?

ICBC:Short-term Autoplan policy
- 3 to 11 months When your vehicle won't be on the road for a full year, a short-term policy might be your best choice. You'll pay a small surcharge, but the total cost will be less than a full-year policy.

buy a 5th, apply for fleet

serious: option 2

you can go to autoplan every weekend, pay the 28 bucks and putz around flipping plates around or you can just insure them all. I buy for the fun cars when the weather gets good and cancel when it's junk (basically take ski season off). Buy the whole year for the best rate, refund when you're done. this is cheaper than buying 6 months, and you'll want it insured for just a few more days every time.

all I can tell you is if you want to enjoy additional pleasure vehicles, try not to think about the per day insurance cost - it'll ruin it for sure.

Keep the two DD insured and insure the third one only from mid-May to Sept. Only 500-600 bucks and you won't be using more gas anyway since you can't drive two cars at once.

Pretty much what I do, works out to be $700 ish for 5 months of full insurance (pleasure use only). Storage insurance is like $85 for the remainder of the year.

Finding the time to drive the fun car is my only problem, having a young family. I try to drive it at least once a week. Since May, I've only driven 4 tanks of gas.
I used to drive it to work once in a while, but with the VPD crack down, I figured it wasn't worth it.

I just renewed and was asked if I’d drive less than 5000km in the year. Guess they have a new price level for vehicles that aren’t driven much? Probably worth asking about anyway for a pleasure vehicle.

^ Next year upon renewal you will receive a 10% discount if you show your odometer again and have driven less than 5000 kms.

Truck - Plates and ICBC year round
Subaru - Typically plates and ICBC year round, though I let it lapse in May, and will reinsure in October. Reminds me, I need to fix the trunk latch...
1958 Beetle, 1971 Rally Bug, 1963 MG Midget - Insured on Hagerty year round, plates are anywhere from 6 to 12 mo depending on the car/year.
Trailer - Year round plates and ICBC.

Who has time running around to pay for swapping plates? Unless it was a seasonal thing, that I could understand.

Looked into ICBC's fleet program, won't work for my needs. Every vehicle needs to have the exact same coverage, and it doesn't matter that I'm a single individual living alone. You lose your discount rating when you switch to fleet insurance, as you're considered a "new fleet customer".

Pilot ICBC all year
Tacoma ICBC all year
S2000 April - Sept

I would do yearly on the S2000 then cancel when the weather gets bad but I like my plate so pay for 5 or 6 months depending on when I decide to insure it.

It depends entirely on what you need to drive. If you think you might need your main car then keep both insured, if you won't be driving it at all then swap the plates and put storage on it.

The age of your fun car is also a factor. If it's something new it's a non-issue, but if you're getting something older then having both vehicles plated so you can just grab the keys and jump in your daily if the toy acts up is a huge plus.

i think back when i had 3 i looked at the costs and if i was to drive the 3rd more than once a week i might as well fully insure it under pleasure, leaving me the option of driving any day anytime without the hassle of paperwork.
mind you this was several years ago

I was told if I insure for a year then transfer to storage before the year expires I will loose my plate.

I will try this next yr when I insure it.

How do I do that? I've been doing 3 months at a time because I want to keep my plates.

i was told I would lose my plates even if you change it to storage

So what I did was transfer the plate I liked to my DD and then insure my S2000 for a full year with new plates, and then cancel anytime after 3 months (must be minimum 3 months)

This is how I get around the under 1 year surcharge (should be cheaper than short term) and keep the plate I like (sorta)

Especially now that they want you to list all the driver's of the vehicles, it's absolutely retarded that we pay full insurance for multiple vehicles, under a single driver.

If this is true, I really hope they find a way to encourage this more. Or make new plates to be something like $100 everytime instead of the current $17.

Way too many people licensing a vehicle for a few months only and then cancel when the weather turns bad. We'll very soon be out of #'s and combinations.

The expiry date sticker is already on the plate. If you cancel and don't return the plate, you could theoretically drive your car around without insurance, but with the plates on. I'm thinking this is why ICBC asks you to return the plate when you cancel your insurance, even if you transfer it to storage.

Unless you're physically removing the sticker off in front of them and returning that?

If you cancel the policy, the plates are cancelled as well. If the broker doesn’t collect the plates, it’s on them if something happens. The ICBC and other systems that Law enforcement use will show cancelled.

When you cancel the policy, you can select a reason and depending on the reason, the system can waive he $30 cancellation fee.

I pay for all 3, kinda dumb, because i cannot physically drive all 3 cars yet they are all insured.

if i was in another province, where icbc isn't a monopoly, the extra cars would probably only cost about a few hundred more

When you cancel the policy - and say if the broker really didn't collect your plate. You kept both the front and rear.
Couple months down the road, you want to start a new policy - there's no way to use the above plate again is there?
