Price of premium gas

Didnt 91 used to only cost like 20c or so more than regular?

I was just at husky and filled up on 87 octane at 131.99, but 91 octane was 169.99, 38c more expensive. How long has this been going on for?

Was $0.20 more at Shell when I filled yesterday.

FWIW, Shell was pricier for 91 than most when I started using it. Most were $0.18 more while the least difference I found was $0.15 more. That was 4 years ago.

I live in Vancouver, and looked at the price difference, in cents, between regular (87) and supreme (91) a few weeks ago.

Chevron: +18
Esso: +20
Shell: +24

Use GasBuddy if you need 91, when I drove a car that needed it I noticed up to $0.10/L difference in the price of 91 between stations around town. Of course 87 was all the same because that's what they advertise, they just silently screw over anyone needing 91. I noticed one Husky at the south end of town that was the last gas station leading to a wealthier neighbourhood always had the highest price for 91.

FWIW, even US gas has a big difference ~ $0.40USD between 87 and 91 VPower, which is around a CAD $0.14/L difference (assuming 1.34 fx).

Still cheap (ish) either way tho, CAD 133.4 for VPower, even if Shell is more expensive than the other places (incl. US Chevron 94).

if you fill on premium gas, check your pump before filling to make sure your station isn't trying to pull this shady BS!

what do you guys think of Superstore Gas and Super Save gas (westminister highway in Richmond)

Is the gas quality the same as Esso, Husky etc ?

From what I heard, its the same gas truck that goes from station to station refilling gas for them.

True ?

If you need premium (91), fill up at gas station that offer 94.

Gas station that offer 94 octane usually price 91 cheaper than those that doesn't
(e.g. gas station with 94 octane usually price 91 around 20c higher than regular, gas station w/o 94 price the 91 around 30c higher)

This is in TO, but I think same would applies to vancouver

I thought it had something to do with tax, or does gas station have liberty on setting prices for higher grades?

Back in Nova Scotia, everything can be calculated out consistently, every grade goes up 3cents vs their advertised price. Maybe something to do with provincial government regulations? BC have the shittiest fucking thing, except for the weather.

Ever since gas became cheaper at 129.9, the night time price differential doesn't seem to be in effect, or it's very marginal. It used to be a 8-10 cents/L difference at night when gas was more expensive, but lately I see the night time price very close to the day time price.

So much for supply and demand.

The price difference has definitely gone up. In the past -- perhaps even as recent as only a year ago -- I seem to remember the premium for 91 gas (over 87 gas) to be in the 17 - 22¢ range. But these days, the range seems to have increased to a 22 - 26¢ range.

I only fill up at night when the prices are cheaper.

I don't ever use Super Save gas, so I can't really comment on it. But I have used Mobil, Esso, and Husky on occasion, and I couldn't come to anything conclusive about these 3 brands.

Mobil and Esso are both under ExxonMobil, so you'd think that their gas should be identical. Generally, I find that my 91 gas-tuned car does not like the stuff from either brand, and it seems to like the Mobil gas a little less than the Esso gas -- the engine seems to run slightly coarser and harsher when it is on Mobil gas. On 2 occassions when I filled up with Esso 91, the engine seems to be nearly as good on power and rev happiness as when it is on Shell V-Power, although the engine still felt more coarse when it is revving. Husky generally seems about the same as Mobil and Esso to my cars.

It should be noted that Mobil and Esso are Top Tier gas, while Husky isn't. But Husky also claims that its 91 gas contains no ethanol:
