What's its like after COVID19

Had a funny chat on zoom with buddies... few things that has forever changed...

No more netflix and chill...
Decrease in FB / IG post... cause one one is posting vacation pics anymore.
Significant drop in flirting / dating in person interactions.
Cooking skills are going off the charts nowadays, guess depending what age group.
Reality check on never living beyond their means.

Anyhoo, those were a few that came to mind.

No more sports other than motorsports.

I hope there's an after. Lots if viruses have no cure, just imagine if they never find a cure for this? How long do you wait before you close up the movie theaters, clubs, restaurants, casinos, schools.

I think the biggest thing is every one that is currently affected by working in hospitality will be reconsidering their life choices and what kind of job/career they want after coming out of this. That means you're going to have people that work in hotels, restaurants, travel, cruise ships, and taxis looking for a change because they know it's not dependable.

I expect technologies will develop more, also the demands for jobs as freelancers and working from home type. There is no turning back when 5G is in full activation, either we like it or not.
Hopefully, Canada will create more jobs for their own Canadian citizens. Its getting hard for myself to compete with more experienced foreigners within my industry

Robots/Drones might be used more
5G will be embraced

Depending on how things go China might not be the global centre anymore, but it doesn't seem like countries are really pushing that

- There will be more pandemics in the future, so governments will incentivize domestic production of key medical supplies, such as masks and other PPE

- Businesses that don't already have remote working or functioning e-commerce will be forced to adapt.

- There will be a demand among those who have the means for larger homes that have spare bedrooms that can be converted to office space, have outdoor space, etc. As employers become more flexible with working remotely, there could be a demand for larger homes in the suburbs, especially along millennials with children.

LOL I was just thinking that. It's fun to see some of the older members come back and post. Looking at the Join Dates and thinking "wow, almost 20 years on a website..." for a lot of us.

You raise a good point. I wonder if the trend of urbanization will be partially reversed by the increasing availability/acceptance of working remotely, at least in certain sectors. May breath new life into some towns that are shrinking.

The whole selling point of densification and urbanization was to trade living space for public space, such as parks, and entertainment such as restaurants, cafes, theatres, and other venues designed for lots of people. Well, many restaurants, theatres, and other types of businesses that are found in dense neighbourhoods are not coming back because governments do not have the ability to subsidize every business. We are going to see significant economic restructuring and perhaps a significant rethinking around land use also.

The enthusiasm around public transit use in the Lower Mainland is in danger and people who have the means will likely opt to commute using their cars in the medium term.

Saw this on Global news, 3 taxi companies stopped operations. COVID19 killed the monopoly market (a good thing), on the selected few who charge an arm & a leg for drivers to pay back the license fee.

HK learned their lesson from SARS, BUT what happened when the news broke out. first 5 years, they kept the projected amount on hand, then 7, 9 12 yrs later, supplies on hand kept on decreasing. I don't blame them as there are burn rates / expiry on them. We are afterall humans... and out of sight and out of mind... budget kept going down.

I think groceries will change a lot. More people will want to get delivery/curbside pickup and I feel like people will be less inclined to take a minimum wage job as a cashier knowing if shit hits the fan they're considered essential front line workers getting exposed like crazy.

Makes sense, there's a lot less to advertise for now.

Less inclined to take a minimum wage job? I don't think anyone is inclined to take a minimum wage job they take it because they need it. Believe it or not a lot of people are happy to still have a job to go to rather than sit at home wondering if they even have a job to go back to after the dust settles.

Is this the new normal? I understand the government needs to prepare a hell of a lot better medically in case this shit happens again but let's be honest, this isn't something you expect to happen every 10 years. If that's the case were fucked. Small business are done, no one will invest in that cause why the fuck would you knowing you're non essential. We're assuming this is a once in a lifetime experience are we not?

No one wants a min wage job in retail. Nanaimo Walmart just installed a bunch of self check out lanes I bet do to the fact they cant find people to work. There is a big shortage of min wage workers. Go to any fast food place and you will see they are hiring and most of there staff are imagrants.

I disagree. If history is any indication, this is not the first pandemic and is unlikely to be the last. If anything, the frequency of pandemics could rise going forward. Hence, as some others have suggested, I also believe were gonna see a "reconfiguration" of how we go about "working", so that in the future when a similar situation arises, more businesses are better equipped for business continuity purposes. Hopefully, our health care system is better prepared the next time around as well and that greater synergies are created spanning different government levels so as to have better coordination during times of crisis.

I’d imagine there will be a lot of new inventions at the end of this. Not necessarily for pandemic/health situations nor from people who consider themselves as inventors.

This situation has given some people extra time to think on their own outside of the day to day rat race. I would guess some have let their creativity out.
