Explosion in Beirut kills dozens, injures thousands

:ahwow:

https://edition.cnn.com/middleeast/l...ntl/index.html

Trump called it an attack, because he's literally an idiot and can't wait for actual investigations to be completed. So far nobody else indicates that to be the case. Just an awful accident.

78 dead so far, 4000 injured

StylinRed 08-04-2020 04:52 PM

At first the media was trying to link the Hariri case to it, but it quickly became evident that it was an accident, supposedly the warehouse housed dangerous amounts of ammonium nitrate etc, heard reports of fireworks too

underscore 08-04-2020 05:51 PM

The damage looks pretty extensive, the structures seem to have held up pretty well considering the size of the blast though

SkinnyPupp 08-04-2020 06:04 PM

You can see a bunch of smaller explosions going off, I wonder if those are the fireworks?

Seriously, who the fuck needs fireworks anymore? Something so superfluous yet so dangerous when stored in large quantities :seriously:

Edit: Apparently it is ammonium nitrate which has been stored there for over 6 years WutFace

Still, fireworks are dumb

cafe22 08-04-2020 06:17 PM

"A huge cache of ammonium nitrate, an explosive compound, had been stored at the blast site" -ny times

Apparently there was 2.7k tonnes of this stuff stored. Who ever approved to have the warehouse so close to the City should be fired or jailed.

Yeah I just saw that

Good luck pinning the blame on someone. Lebanon is a broken state. They were in the middle of a revolution when Coronavirus put a stop to it.

Teriyaki 08-04-2020 09:07 PM

Seen some very NSFW clips, holy things got really grizzly down there. RIP

Over 1000x the power of Oklahoma Bombing...

Holy crap. It literally blasted the ground away

whitev70r 08-05-2020 11:24 AM

Here is your scapegoat:

Beirut explosion: Port officials under house arrest as rescue efforts continue
https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-53670839

A number of Beirut port officials are being placed under house arrest pending an investigation into Tuesday's huge explosion, Lebanon's government says.

pastarocket 08-05-2020 11:42 AM

RIP to the individuals who were killed in this explosion in Beirut.

This incident reminds me of another explosion in 2015. The big explosion in Fujian, China.

Great68 08-05-2020 12:51 PM

Tianjin was 800 tons of Ammonium Nitrate, this one they're saying was 2700 tons. That's insane!

underscore 08-05-2020 01:18 PM

Apparently the pile of explosive fertilizer was abandoned by whoever owned it after a Russian businessman abandoned a ship there:

donk. 08-05-2020 03:17 PM

was not expecting that...... i thought the smoke cloud at the start was the damage

in B4 endless rumors of what caused it

SkinnyPupp 08-05-2020 03:20 PM

mikemhg 08-05-2020 05:06 PM

One can't imagine such cargo simply sitting there for 6 years in unsafe storage conditions.

Many of these Middle Eastern countries are having a reckoning in terms of their political class.

That explosion is insane, they akin its power to that of a small tactical nuke.

RRxtar 08-05-2020 06:00 PM

estimates are that it was about 1500mt of tnt equivalent. which is about 1/10th the size of the hiroshima bomb, and 100x more powerful than the MOAB bomb which is the largest non nuclear bomb ever made. whats absolutely unreal is that it is only half the size of the halifax harbor explosion of 1917.

aside from the horrendous tragedy of the lives lost and injured, it is incredible to see a blast this big captured by so many cameras. the force coming at you at that speed is unbelievable and horrifying.

Not necessarily. I imagine most of that area is/was sitting over the water on pilings in order to allow enough depth for ships to dock up close. Could be wrong, but that's my guess. Still incredible damage.

now Lebanon is asking for international funding help after their piece of shit government would store something like that inside a city.

they need to sign they're entire country over to a higher state since there's this many fuck up's..

its crazy there's no riots or anything happening, someone had to sign this off storing such a stupid amount of dangerous materials thinking its all dandy & okay.

Wonder if they'll accept aid from Israel seeing as how piratically all their other neighbors are dealing with their own shit as well.

Five million dollars is already being pledged by our PM for Lebanon???

Our country is facing a huge government deficit of over $343 billion because of spending related to Covid 19. We cannot afford to give money away to other countries right now!

Does Trudeau think that money grows on trees??? This is our taxpayer dollars!

That's what friends are for.

Look at all the countries that donated to the US after hurricane Katrina. The friggin US who claims to be the greatest country in the world.

If Canada had done nothing you would have sat there blaming Trudeau for being heartless.
