Citizens of Nanaimo upset at a new mural

The city of Nanaimo paid some artists to paint some murals. Some people aren't too happy about this one.

Bunch of Karens

I'm cool with it, but it's pretty obvious why some people might not like it.

StylinRed 08-17-2020 10:55 PM

lol it is a bit fucked up for a city to pay for that :lol if it were just a private business that paid for it for their shop it'd be /shrug but even then residents would still be pissed since its the content that's the issue I guess

Tim Budong 08-17-2020 11:03 PM

reminds me of....
Pied Piper ahaha
which is a nsfw mural..but yea. hahaha

320icar 08-17-2020 11:29 PM

That is beautiful!!

Looks like one of those ugly dolls all growed up

AzNightmare 08-18-2020 12:53 AM

wtf, I looked at it very fast and thought it was a bear-like creature fapping and just blew its load.

Jmac 08-18-2020 01:21 AM

Looks like that's across the street from the old firehouse? I mean, it's probably nicer to look at that than the usual shit you see in that area.

bcrdukes 08-18-2020 04:51 AM

Reminds me of this

UnknownJinX 08-18-2020 09:54 AM

Reminds me of the City of Vancouver logo incident. $8,000 and you get something you can make in MS Word in 5 minutes. It's really no wonder why "artists" don't get much respect nowadays.

Don't really see how it's "Karen" to complain about it.

It's one thing if this is just some random graffiti, it's another when it's paid for and displayed in the public. If it's displayed in the public and paid for by its citizens, I think it's pretty reasonable to demand that it represents a city well.

Like, what am I supposed to get out of this? I am not usually the "but think of the children!" type of person, but I think this applies here.

MarkyMark 08-18-2020 10:15 AM

How long before someone vandalizes it because they're "offended".

6793026 08-18-2020 01:07 PM

if it was hidden some area of hipster town of main street, i can see it being ok.. but still.

"Think of the children" is the first thing I did and I think "The children" will absolutely love this thing!

I think the city of Nanaimo just paid for the artist's supply of acid for the year.

Meh. Knowing how many old people reside on the island in nearby Parksville and Qualllicum while using Nanaimo for most shopping, I can see why some would be upset. A brief look at art through history, even during their own time, and this looks pretty tame in comparison. Also not as important as the article writer, the artist, or the OP seem to believe it go be, beyond the tax dollars of course.

I don’t think i see what you guys see. I think it’s just beautiful. Early 90’s MTV art style, a softer version of rat fink.

Beautiful

Beautiful

The pipe looks like his dick and its shooting out sperm with hearts on it

And whatever he's jerking in his hands looks like a dick too blowing its rainbow load everywhere :lol

if this were on the side of some shop/alleyway on main st it'd be /shrug but for the city to commission it, on the island no less, yeah I can understand why there are complaints :lol

People from Parksville and Qualicum don't go to south Nanaimo unless they're going to the casino. All the shopping is at the north end.

SkinnyPupp 08-19-2020 02:39 AM

The one argument I'd make for a municipality funded mural, is that it should have gone to a First Nations artist. Nanaimo is Coast Salish land, and should be respectful to that as much as they can. I remember day trips to Chemainus as a kid to see the murals and native art, and loving it so much (and we'd get a waffle cone every time!)
