Tile board for shower wall

Planning our bathroom reno and gathering materials. Trying to find an alternative to tile. Not fond of grout. Does anyone here have personal experience using tile board for the bathtub/shower walls?
I've heard mixed opinions. Some say it will work fine so long as it's all properly caulked and sealed and there are no imperfections in the material. Others say to stay away (mostly tile layers i think) as it will end up leaking.
We originally ordered a shower wall kit from home depot, which was the only one in the subway tile finish that we're looking to do, but they've since discontinued it in Canada.

It's got tile board in there now. I imagine it's been there for quite awhile. At least a couple decades i think. FWIW I've been in the crawlspace many times right underneath as it's easy access, and haven't seen any signs of leakage.

Any experience/input/advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
