Canadian’s don’t need receipts to make a claim of up to $250 in the class-action lawsuit against Microsoft.

The class-action lawsuit alleged that Microsoft and Microsoft Canada were conspiring to illegally increase product prices.

The agreement allows consumers in Canada to claim up to $250 for their Microsoft PC software — Windows, Office, Word, Excel or MS-DOS — purchased between December 23, 1998, and March 11, 2010, without receipts. For any claims that are higher, proof of purchase is necessary.

And the purchase must have been made for personal or business use in Canada on an Intel-compatible personal computer and not for resale.

To make a claim, the application process has been made to be straightforward to follow.

Payments per Microsoft product licence range from $6.50 to $13 for both Consumer Cash Payments (if you purchased a licence for one of the Microsoft products listed) and Volume Licensee Vouchers (if you purchased a licence for one of the Microsoft products listed through a Microsoft volume licensing program).

The lawsuits commenced in British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec but include Canadian residents in all provinces and territories.

Microsoft agreed to the settlement but denied any wrongdoing or liability.


Submitting a claim for compensation can be done no later than September 23, 2021.

The settlement was capped at $517 million and amounts to around $400 million for consumers after deducting legal fees and expenses.

Yup, done. Just add the products until you reach about $248.90 or so.

Totals somewhere close to the limit.

You can get to 250 exactly but filling out all the details for each one is such a pain, if I had receipts it'd be way more than 250 though

I have receipts for 19 computers but only 3 are mine. I built the other 16 for people I know ...

Congrats to everyone committing perjury? Hope the people pumping this up don't complain about morals/ethics/liars in any other thread, would be pretty hypocritical.............

I only submitted for the 3 I actually owned. The others I e-mailed receipts and a link to the site in case they lost/deleted the receipt and/or didn’t know about the suit.

I've bought 2 Windows machines in the last 15 years. 1 in the states which I don't think will count for this.

Anyways, it says I get $13. woohoo for honesty.

Over 1/5th of the payout to lawyers? That seems a bit crazy since I doubt they did $117M worth of work. I'd be curious to know if their amount is fixed, or based on the number of people making claims. It seems unlikely they'll hit $400M anyways since at $250/person that's 1.6M people and who on earth has receipts from that long ago. Hell a lot of companies that might be eligible may not even be in business anymore.

I got about $70 back didn’t have receipts but I could track back my computers and office suites since about 2007

I just put the legit shit I bought, $55 whatever.

WOW I didn't realize how many Windows systems I actually bought over the years until I saw that list.

Finally, the days where I was building PCs for friends and family have finally come to pay off.
