Summer camps have been fun for us /s

We've got 4 weeks filled up out of the 9. The first week we are camping, the final week we are going to Parksville. We are still trying to plan one more camping trip in August. That still leaves 2 weeks of blank time.

https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/e...-savings-grant

Quote:
Families in British Columbia are encouraged to start planning and saving early for their children’s post-secondary education or training programs. To help, the B.C. Government will contribute $1,200 to eligible children through the B.C. Training and Education Savings Grant (BCTESG).

Children may apply for the grant between their 6th birthday and the day before they turn 9. The parent or guardian plus the child must be residents of British Columbia at the time of application and have a valid Social Insurance Number.
Anyone here apply for this yet? Had no idea it existed.

Typical gov. We roll out programs but don't make it easily advertised, let alone make it easy for people to be aware of it. Leading ppl to think that our gov does nothing, there's no benefits / programs / subsidies.. lol

Apparently my wife had already applied for it, but it has been nothing but a major PITA. Not all banks are able to open an account for it, and for whatever reason, my wife choice National Bank to handle our request, and the application has been stuck for some 3+ months. She has been trying to follow up on it, but the administrators seem kind of incompetent in even just getting back to her inquiries.

I really need to get off my butt and fill out the dumb paperwork to expand my RESP account so I can independently trade rather than be stuck with mutual funds.

Being a parent is so tough. On the one hand you want them to pursue their interests, but you also hate seeing them get hurt…

Case in point: my son has trained for many years in tkd and one of the activities he enjoys is sparring with the other kids of various levels in his school. While he gets in his fair share of hits, he also receives quite the beating at times. Worst injury so far is a broken finger (because he didn’t keep his hands closed as instructed by the Master, so that became an excellent teaching moment for the other students).

Today he came back with a bruise/scrape on his chin (will make for a good story at school, “you should see the other guy”) and a bruised/swollen foot. In addition, my wife is taking him to the hospital tomorrow to get a x-ray on his shin to ensure it’s not fractured.

Edit: just another bruise on the shin…

I'll be the guy standing from the sidelines to chime in to say that at least his injuries were in a controlled environment and not a schoolyard scrap. God knows what kids bring to school these days. Hondaracer mentioned guns? Yeah, no thanks.

I think it really depends on the area the schools in and the school culture.

Tupper ranks higher than Killarney academically now.

And during my time in Killarney, we had tons of shit happen. A student was KILLED at Tupper, by Killarney students.
Brawls at the smoke pit on the regular
Some one got their fingers cut off and there was a huge trail of blood throughout the hallways

I remember back in HS I'd always notice in the Tupper yearbook there'd be quite a few baby mommas.

So which schools are hard now by hard I mean having the reputation of having the most gangstas?

I used to have to explain to people that Tupper had a mini school as well., but it was for teen moms, not for IB or other advanced academic programs.

One of my friends was attended a West side mini school. The first time I met her, I joked she didn't didn't look like a teen mom.

Damn, kids these days.

I guess my experience at Brit was super mild and boring in comparison.

Starting to get interested in e-bikes as I other parents riding with kids. Any recommendations on brands/models and which ones can carry kids (preferably 2).

The Radpower Cargo bike can carry two small kids. One of the parents at my kids school uses it and is quite happy with it. They're a car free family (uses Modo in a pinch) and each parent has a Radpower bike that carries 1 kid each for them.

Seeing a lot of parents with kids use something similar to that Radpower bike. Very common in the Champlain area as lots of young families down at River District. The hill is challenging and parking is challenging. A lot of them have some tent like contraption for the rain so they use it in all weather.

Just need to put some angry eyebrows on.

Was a Granville island today and was looking around at what parents were using. Your’re right, most of them are rad power. The cargo one that carries 2 kids is $3000! Not including all the extra accessories.

The previous generation one (v4) is still available for a lot less right now ($2100) - it's been out since 2021. Not sure what the diff is though.

Radpower bikes with 2 kids on the back are EVERYWHERE in North Van, and have been for a few years. If I was looking for an e-bike to carry family, that's the one I'd go with no question.

Now you got me googling: https://gearjunkie.com/biking/best-electric-cargo-bikes

I've been lightly thinking about an e-bike too but just for me and my 6 year old - Radpower seems like the obvious choice due to how popular it is but now you got me thinking about other brands too.

I want something that lets me pop over to Metrotown for a quick lunch or grocery run (versus walking 20-25 mins or driving 5 mins) while being able to carry my kid for sunny daddy/daughter days.
