Rogers to buy shaw for 26 billion

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.5949825

Not good news for the consumer.

Quote:
Rogers Communications has signed a deal to buy Shaw Communications in a transaction valued at $26 billion, including debt, which would create Canada's No. 2 cellular operator — but is likely to face stiff regulatory scrutiny.

Without Googles tracking crap: https://www.cbc.ca/news/business/rog...shaw-1.5949825

I'm gonna go out on a limb and assume the Shaw services I've liked for the last decade + are about to go to shit.

We as citizens should be outraged that this is even a consideration. Monopolies continue to get larger, consolidation will make things less competitive and more expensive. However it feels like there isn't much we can do. Any way that the CRTC or government block this?

IMO CRTC should disallow the purchase, much like how it disallowed Telus to buy Mobilicity a few years ago. The acquisition would give Rogers too much power and too large a market share in the market, stifling competition.

In reality, I don't think CRTC has been uniformly fair in its enforcement. Instead, they seem to prefer playing favourites (and non-favourites) at times. So I don't actually have very much faith in them stepping in to do the right thing this time.

The title is misleading...there's no agreement it's just an offer to buy...it still needs Shaw's shareholder approval and then the regulatory go ahead...they've talked in years prior but didnt get the sense that they'd get the go ahead from regulators...its gonna be a huge hurdle to get through should the shareholders approve this

5 years back wind was purchased for 1.6b

8 years ago microsoft paid only 7b US for nokia hardware acquisition

Welp, Shaw shareholders will give it a green light so that won't be the hold up. Share prices was at $23 yesterday, the offer is like north of $40.

Regulatory board ... ?? So there is Rogers/Shaw (potentially), Telus, BCE/Bell ... just going from 4 major players down to 3. There is still 3 ... might force Bell to jump into bed with Telus?

The CEO and Board of Directors might as well rename the company as "Robbers Cable".

Didn't think the Air Canada + Transat deal would go through and it did, even though competition is even tighter in that space. Bias aside, pretty optimistic the Rogers Shaw marriage will get the green light.

Rogers and Shaw has been in bed for ages. Shareholder approval is pretty much a given.

Rogers pricing for home internet out East actually looks cheaper than the price plans we get over here in the west with Shaw.

Regardless, its not like Shaw isn't basically Rogers, but with a different name. Their operations mirror each other on the home front. The wireless space though, that might become a tad bit too big for comfort.

it was Rogers back in the 90's, then Shaw took over. now it's back to Rogers. oh well. it's not like they really competed with each other here, you never could choose between the two.

I've been with Freedom since early Wind days, and would hate to see Rogers buy Shaw if it includes the cellular business. While Freedom is far from perfect, I'm never going to get a plan with enough data and US roaming for $33+tax with Rogers.

Shaw started in the west. Then they expanded east and rogers expanded west. Then they did a territory swap from what I remember.
