My dad had an orange ‘72 Chevelle.

He also had a VW Type 3 Squareback. Yep, it was orange too.

Then he bought a truck and never looked back. Lately I’ve been thinking trucks. Apples. Trees. Ya know.

My parents were never big into cars, but back in the day my dad had a 1968 Firebird, painted brown with gold flake and gold wheels. He sold it when they were living in downtown Vancouver because it kept getting broken into (or damaged if he just left it unlocked with nothing in it). I'd love to find it but since he sold it back in the 80's it'd be impossible to find (if it even exists).

Growing up my parents had a Turismo and some other generic car, then a Ford Aerostar they bought brand new and a Jeep Cherokee. My mom wanted to get the van in one of the funkier colours but my dad figured that would shows its age more as colours went out of style and make resale worse, so they got silver. In the end they never sold it and my mom drove it to the scrap yard when they bought something new 18 years later so resale value never mattered at all lmao.

My dad’s stories are my favourite. His first car was an old Capri also.
His first new car was a 1987 Integra 3dr RS, in red. It had pop-up moonroof and he installed the RH side mirror himself (yep passenger side mirror still optional then). I think he said a few of his classmates and friends had (the now 80s classics) Corolla GTS, Sentra hatchback, etc. My mom still bugs him for that one time he tried to teach her manual on it once; it was basically him sighing and saying, “oh there goes my clutch” the whole time. Because it was his baby haha. I don’t think we have any photos of it; the car was gone before the real baby (me) arrived.
From baby onwards, we had various cars like Camry Wagon (manual), MPV, Toyota Pickup 2WD (manual) and assortment of Land Cruisers; 40 series, 60 series, 70 series. 70 series ended up being my favourite. My mom loved the 70 because of its height and visibility. They only came in manual though, so she had to learn manual for real this time. Even our family’s first new car was a manual Matrix. Eventually the Land Cruisers went but we still have one, albeit sitting for the last 14 years. You’d figure it would’ve been fixed by now since the son of the owner became a mechanic. I’m working on it!
I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree cuz now i’m in an Integra haha

Then you can sympathize with my pain... it's a Ford... and it's also German... I can think of better combinations

My dad drove a Mazda 323 manual transmission, in the 80s early 90s. Then he got a ford escort station wagon, which blew up in the mall parking lot. Engine fire from leaking fuel injectors. Despite that, he still bought a Ford focus after that and Mazda cx5, and I'm currently driving a Ford too.

My dad did the same, then proceeded to throw away the laserdisc machine which had a fav disc in it. I bought another one, and realized idk how to set up the laserdisc machine LOL

My copy of HEAT (disc 1) is stuck in my laserdisc player

I have about a 100 discs, and about a 100 more of my dads old vinyl. At one point it got given away, but I was able to talk the recipient into giving me back some of it.

Is it just me imagining it or did only Asian people have laser discs? I saw them at all my Asian friends houses growing up, but I didn’t know a single white person that had a laser disc player hahaha

First a Fiat Punto that was stolen outside of an amusement park

Then it was a Peugeot 406 that was totalled (Outside our house)

Then the last car he had was a 1G Volvo S40.

All manuals too. Then again most cars in Taiwan were at the time.

Dad had a 300Z in HK, I only have vague memories of this as I was pretty young but he kept saying that's why my mom loved him. Mom denies this.

When we moved here he got a 95 Passat GLX VR6. I still remember when I got my licence I drove it home it was awesome and scary at the same time.

then a 2003 Honda Pilot. He wanted to go camping with the entire family and what not but I was growing up and a computer was far more interesting than going outside.

Learned how to drive in my Dad’s 1997 F350 known affectionately as “Big Red”. 5 spd with the long arse floor shifter and torque for days. I learned very quickly about turning radius and how to back up using side mirrors

Looked just like this, but with a white centre stripe. I periodically see these trucks and it takes me back to my teens in an instant!

And maybe he'll finally get rid of that bronze metallic Pontiac Montana and stop complaining about how bad it is on gas / slow it is. I can't believe that POS still runs.
I remember seeing this shitty grand am, very similar to my dad's, from the back and night and thinking it was a Silvia lol.

I can't find any pictures of the short wheel base bronze Pontiac Montana on the internet, so a picture of it behind my late 330Ci will have to suffice. I guess the colour is pretty rare after all.

My parents played a lot of Richard Marx, especially Right Here Waiting when I was growing up. It wasn't till I heard the song when I was older that I realized that I know the song from as a kid. Which I later found out it's cause they had a laserdisc of it. I would love to have a copy of it again.

My uncle had an 89 325i back in the day and I was mesmerized by that. He bought it brand new so that in itself was really cool. Sadly I never got a ride in it because it was totaled and he walked out unscathed and bought a 94 4Runner until it was then rear ended a few years ago.

I love BMW, but man, they put owners through some painful shit. #hypocrite

This is a great topic.
My dad's first car was a hand-me-down Pontiac Acadian / Chevette.
He drove that for a few years before it eventually overheated and died. I think he had that from the mid to late 80's to early 90s. He might have had a Dodge Aries or something shortly after.

When I was born in 93, my dad bought his first new car in Canada and thus, our first family car - a 1993 Toyota Corolla DX in what my dad calls to this day "champagne".
One of my only memory of that car was when I opened the door on the highway to see what would happen and my parents freaking out
I have no idea if it had child locks or if my parents even knew what they were. That car ended up getting written off in 2001 in an accident that almost killed our family when a merging van hit us and spun us into the guard rail on the old Willingdon bridge over HWY1. I remember seeing the front 1/3 of our car hanging over the bridge after emergency crews got us out.

Our old neighbours had an OG Grand Caravan as well, in purple.

Because we had it so long we've got lots of funny stories about the Aerostar. The middle side windows were sliders and the easiest thing in the world to break into with a coathanger. I don't think anyone ever did though, because who would want anything from an Aerostar, but we did it a lot when my brother would lock the keys in it as a kid.

We moved a pool table by taking the seats out. The suspension did not like that.

The front brake pads were held in by these weird lead filled pin things. I went to change them once when I was first getting into working on cars and I was all stoked to bust out my shiny new socket set. Only to take the wheel off and realize you change them with a hammer and pliers.

I used to always kind of jump in the sliding door. Except I grew and hadn't been in it for a while, so one day I just smoked my head on the top of the door jam and ended up on my ass in the parking lot. My mom was laughing too hard to be able to ask if I was okay

The one rear seat had stereo controls beside it, and a headphone jack but it was the jumbo size for some reason. I could never figure out what the point of that was.
