Who's better? Throttle House or The Straight Pipes

Just came across this video where The Straight Pipes give a non-confirmation that there's an ongoing beef with Throttle House.

Personally, I think while they're both in the same space, they each revolutionized Canadian automotive journalism. I remember there was basically nothing to watch in the automotive space made by Canadian content creators. The Straight Pipes uses the same format across every video which makes it nice when car shopping. Plus the crispy exhaust clips, hence the name.

Throttle House videos are funny. I don't actually watch too much TH, it's a bit lengthy for me. But I followed TH first, because Thomas Holland's channel was originally on HPDE focused product reviews for the E46, which I enjoyed. Given Thomas' HPDE experience, I enjoy his videos when it comes to considering a performance aspect.

I think both creators are like a Canadian mix of ThatDudeInBlue, whose videos I really enjoy.

I would love to take a look into other Canadian automotive content creators!

I like the guys on straight pipes more, but I think throttle house guys do a better job

vitaminG 07-20-2021 05:08 PM

Savagegeese

ssjGoku69 07-20-2021 05:12 PM

For me, I unsubscribed from straightpipes after discovering throttle house because straightpipes seemed to be yelling everything. I enjoy the chiller energy from Throttle House.

edit: what beef is there between the two channels? Straightpipes is salty because they think throttle house is copy/pasting their format and then surpassed them in subscribers?

JDMDreams 07-20-2021 05:20 PM

I don't really watch the others, only straight pipes. But it's not like I'm the the market for a new car. So I prefer car throttle cuz they do cars that I'll actually consider and can afford to buy.

Teriyaki 07-20-2021 05:54 PM

What is this, like beef between CarAndDriver and MotorTrend Magazine?

I watched TheStraightPipes occasionally, but their schtick gets a little tiring after a few videos. Its not bad.

Never heard of throttle house before this, but just went browsed through some of their videos and the production quality seems to be pretty high. They got their own humour and style. If there's some sort of beef with them being accused of plagiarism I don't really see it.

And hell, its YouTube. Everyone copies each other, its the wild-wild-west out there. If anything, beef gets you more exposure. A rising tide raises all ships.

And for the record, SavageGeese takes my vote if there was a vote.

I never knew of Savage geese til now Thanks guys :lol

I prefer Jay Leno :D

roastpuff 07-20-2021 06:08 PM

Throttle House has much higher production values, better opinions/reviews and their humorous intro skits are much better.

I preferred SavageGeese and Alex on Autos(boring, I know) for actual reviews when I was car shopping.

TheStraightPipes was just too repetitive with gimmicks (cliche corner and visor tests), and I didn't know about Throttle House at the time. Do they still do the box test for hatches? But comparing the two more recently, Throttle House wins on production value. The only memorable Straight Pipes videos for me are the ones in which they're able to get a hold of older cars such as the RX-8, RX-7 etc. For anything new from the manufacturer, there are much better options, imo.

I came in to say exactly this 😂 savagegeese and gears and gasoline cover most the good content for this genre

ssjGoku69 07-20-2021 07:13 PM

every video of straightpipes: HORSEPOWER AND TORQUE!, continental tires, visor test, does this fit a small cup of coffee, box test, cliché corner, yes/no rewinding satellite radio

The formula gets boring pretty quick

StylinRed 07-20-2021 07:53 PM

They should join up and make a show called Straight Throttle, and just be the top gear of Canada

SkunkWorks 07-20-2021 08:34 PM

Harry's Garage for me :)

Technically we're part of the commonwealth so counts?

TypeRNammer 07-20-2021 09:31 PM

I discovered Straight Pipes first and watched some of their content, but later on I discovered Throttle House and they have been my go to videos since.

My issue with Straight Pipes is it's the same gimmick over and over again, gets pretty annoying. Especially when they start shouting and say things that aren't comprehensive to the review. I mean there's only so much of "the rims don't look too bad" and "the paint pops bro" that you can say.

With throttle house, the production value is much higher, every intro and every review is different each time. I would go as far to say it's like a Canadian version of Top Gear on a much smaller scale.

One of my favorite throttle house intros :lawl:

In terms of Savage Geese, time to time I'll watch them if I needed a in depth review and analysis on specific cars.

EDIT: Watched the video in the OP, you can tell right off the bat Straight Pipes is salty as hell. But then who knows what Throttle House would say if they were put in the same interview

He's the best for non-editorial reviews IMO, even though he has an editorial section at the end. I watched a video where he reviewed a car in the rain. I haven't see another car reviewer with that level of dedication.

TheStraightPipes gets a bit repetitive after a while. I tried a couple ThrottleHouse videos and I couldn't get into it. Savagegeese is the best; they have some very heavy hitters ranging from the LFA review, to the Miata series.

On a related note, Doug DeMuro is also repetitive, and Redline Reviews is bland as hell.

Sleeper: Hagerty

BIC_BAWS 07-20-2021 11:46 PM

I wouldn't discount Hagerty as of late. Jason Cammisa's Hagerty videos are very enjoyable to watch, especially the M2C vs MK5 Supra vs MK4 Supra video. Very reminiscent of pre pay2watch MotorTrend times.

I can't watch Savageese or Doug Demuro, I fall asleep. Quarter life crisis already accelerating to Zzzzz s.

I heard that Jimmy Mak guy is pretty good.

I only watch Hagerty for Jason, as for SP and TH I only watch them if the cars are interesting to me. I can't watch a full Doug Demuro video I generally only watch it for the unique features and then stop it when he goes for a drive.

As for the above comment of review in the rain. It was hailing and I was out filming, that should be a step above.... right?
edit: shot of when it started coming down hard -

jpark 07-21-2021 02:36 PM

straightpipes for me
Throttle house guys try too hard to be funny lol, although i do like their depreciated vehicle vs new vehicle comparisons

Matsuda 07-21-2021 09:11 PM

I've been watching more Carfection these days and I like Mat Watson (Carwow). I also like Everyday Driver, they have beautiful driving roads in Utah.

I stopped watching Straight Pipes regularly cause their video formula gets old. Starting to prefer Throttle House more.

Could someone please explain what the visor test is actually testing? Is it just who between them can put the visor back to the default position quickest? Or is it about whether the visor can be in a particular angle or position? I don't get it.

Off topic but I don't understand how Doug Demuro can bear kneeling down on 1 knee all the time. I feel like that would be super uncomfortable to press a knee into the hard pavement, but I guess it's just me.

twitchyzero 07-21-2021 09:29 PM

TheTopher/winding road magazine
Autogefühl
SG

i'll watch just about anything but SHMEEEEEE

I think it's their signature gimmick test. Some cars' visors extend, providing additional sun shade. BMWs do not have this feature nor does the Civic so I don't know the hype.
