What VPN you all using these days? 2022

My 3 year subscription to private internet access is expiring and wanting to see if I should consider switching.

No major issues with PIA for me, but I do know that using unblocking Geo for streaming services was non existent with PIA before (haven't tried lately).

I mainly use it for torrenting, but ideally if there's a VPN put there that consistently can access us streaming services like Hulu or HBO Max I'd be curious to try it out.

PIA is pretty big.

I use cyperghost because reddit said it's better for torrenting? Not sure if that's the case. I used PIA before, but they had some IP leaking issues and I was still getting copy right notices from TELUS. That was like five years ago though.

I'm a creature of habit, so if it ain't broke, don't fix it. If PIA is working for you, I say just stick with PIA.

I use ProtonVPN

Expensive compared to the competition, security and features overkill for majority of users, but offers the latest technology and legalities when it comes to security and privacy.

I don't stream much but of the times I have, I didn't encounter any issues or have any negative experiences.

I was on PIA since C-11. I switched to TorGuard in 2020 because they were offering 50% off forever, and had good reviews. I'm happy with the services they provide. I just renewed for another year for $25.

I pretty much use Netflix and prime so don’t really need to be on shady sites, is there any benefit to a vpn for someone like me? I heard they can slow your internet speed down too?

Only benefit to you if you wanted geo-specific content.

Otherwise, no. No benefit. It does slow down your internet speed when a VPN is turned on.

Really depends on what you need. For China/censorship-related, I used ExpressVPN. It's the only VPN working in China that allows me to watch 4k content when in China.

For truly hiding your butt, you want to look into the VPN provider that has a very strict "no-log" policy. It's usually simple... no if or buts, just plain no log kept.

I use PIA.. I don't care about regional streaming - if something's not available on my version of Netflix or Prime or Disney (which I pay for all of them) I'll just download it. Have to do this with HBO since there's no HBO here, and UFC since there's no ESPN+ here.

I am actually insterested in this? But in reverse?

My wife here in Canada want to watch China video sites that only works if you are in "China", I assume as long as the VPN offers a HK server, 99% of those sites will be happy.

Does ExpressVPN work for that as well?

Does anyone use a VPN on their phone?

Potentially looking for something for long term travel where I may or may not be grabbing a regional SIM card. Is it required? I use iPhone 13 pro max and all the security features etc. built into that, but if I’m doing travel bookings, banking etc. on a regional sim or wifi at places like airbnbs and hotels should I be using a VPN?

Used to use ExpressVPN when I was overseas for work and I used it on both phone and laptop. I was working in eastern Europe and it was recommended that I use a VPN for anything where I may be accessing financial/private information.

Yup I have the PIA app installed and use it whenever I go onto a wifi network. I don't bother when just using my 5G. For that I use a private DNS that blocks ad networks

ExpressVPN doesn't have a server inside China, only HK.

You can try it. The free trial is 7day/30days depending on where you sign up.

And yes, VPN on mobile devices if I'm connecting to random Wi-Fi.

Some very n00b questions, is it possible to only use a VPN while using torrents, being able to toggle it on and off as needed?

Does using the VPN bog down the internet speed at all times, even when the VPN is turned off? or only when the service is active?

You can trigger your P2P program to only run when it detects your VPN as active. If you turn the VPN off, it'll disconnect from running torrents.

My... friend... has his set up this way.

I personally haven't noticed a large speed variance while running a VPN vs having it turned off, but I also don't do things like gaming. Any streaming or media project uploading I'm doing doesn't seem to have any appreciable speed hits.

I use Nord and when my VPN is on my internet is slow as hell. I've followed all their troubleshooting shooting guides to no avail so when my membership is over I'm definitely trying someone else. Thankfully it isn't the end of the world as I only turn on VPN when I'm downloading a torrent and I purposely do it when I'm not using my PC or overnight because it's too frustrating trying to use the internet when it's on.

Depends on your provider's app, but ExpressVPN has something called network lock... and it's basically what its name suggests, it locks network on ALL traffic if it loses connection.

It went as far as locking LAN transfers as I wasn't able to print anything.

Thanks all, just stuck with PIA given their reliability, decent speed, and that they were the cheapest compared to NordVPN which I was also considering (3 yrs + 3 months for $80 USD).

Any idea what VPN software your... friend.. is using? I will take a look at the options in Deluge and see if I can figure it out. To download publicly available documentaries of course.

I too have just been using PIA for the last several years. Works fine, never had a reason to change or look elsewhere but I hardly use it.
