Yea I saw the interview last night with James and Bob and they were like they knew instantly, if everything breaks at the same time the sub was gone. But they didn't want to be negative Nancy's. But the true pros knew immediately. And yes they were shitting on their qc way they conduct business.

Kinda scary to think that planes are made of a similar type of material (I know that sticks are obviously a much lower grade... but still).

Be interesting to see how these planes age out.
The difference between this sub and the planes, is that planes have gone through rigourous design & testing reviews to be certified by the FAA. The maximum limits, lifespans etc should all be well known at this point.

The sub, had not had to undergo any of that.

then yesterday just before news broke it imploded i was watching youtube about pagani's titanium infused in CF

was this a similar construction or the CF and titanium were separate layers?

Planes also aren't being repeatedly smashed into a hunk of frozen rubber as big as they are.

The stupidity of media asking if the bodies will be recovered hurts my brain. At that depth and pressure (approx 6000psi) as soon as the hull was compromised air didn't leak out all that pressure shot in. All the air and everything organic inside the sub was crushed down to a tiny point so instantaneously that the friction of the molecules under compression ignited them and caused an explosion. In automotive terms they had about 25x the compression exerted on them as your average turbo diesel engine. Their bodies ceased to exist in a matter of milliseconds.

Yeah they're just mushy matter at this point.

Back in the early 80's a bunch of divers on an oil rig died when their decompression chamber seal failed and experienced an explosive decompression.

The results were pretty fucking gruesome:

Quote:
"Medical investigations were carried out on the remains of the four divers. The most notable finding was the presence of large amounts of fat in large arteries and veins and in the cardiac chambers, as well as intravascular fat in organs, especially the liver.   This fat was unlikely to be embolic, but must have precipitated from the blood in situ. The autopsy suggested that rapid bubble formation in the blood denatured the lipoprotein complexes, rendering the lipids insoluble.  The blood of the three divers left intact inside the chambers likely boiled instantly, stopping their circulation.  The fourth diver was dismembered and mutilated by the blast forcing him out through the partially blocked doorway and died instantly.

Coward, Lucas, and Bergersen were exposed to the effects of explosive decompression and died in the positions indicated by the diagram. Investigation by forensic pathologists determined that Hellevik, being exposed to the highest pressure gradient and in the process of moving to secure the inner door, was forced through the crescent-shaped opening measuring 60 centimetres (24 in) long created by the jammed interior trunk door. With the escaping air and pressure, it included bisection of his thoracoabdominal cavity, which resulted in fragmentation of his body, followed by expulsion of all of the internal organs of his chest and abdomen, except the trachea and a section of small intestine, and of the thoracic spine. These were projected some distance, one section being found 10 metres (30 ft) vertically above the exterior pressure door.
Picture of dude that went through the door, don't click if weak stomach.

I think the main body was CF while the end caps were titanium. That may have been a weak point as well, once the CF started failing. Both materials probably react to pressure cycles differently, creating a weak point in the bond between them.

I don't remember if it was here, or somewhere else that I read. It's harder going down deep than going to space as the pressure difference is immense. It's easier to maintain inner pressure than to resist the immense outer pressure.

And agree on them not testing the life of the sub. As the counter increased, the chance of destruction increased as the material fatigued. With my ignorance of materials science I don't know if CF is the right material for this use.

As James Cameron said in his video, he's gone 3 times deeper than the Titanic before so there's really no excuse for a failure if you actually did all your homework and designed it properly.

Cameron also said why the fuck were they looking all over the place for it? it was exactly where it was supposed to be(straight down from where it launched)

I'm kind of surprised the CEO got on this thing knowing the cost saving measures they took. It sucks people died but at least the guy responsible was on board and not doing some press conference trying to pass the blame on someone else.

Heres a quote from him.

Quote:
"You know, at some point, safety just is pure waste. I mean if you just want to be safe, don't get out of bed, don't get in your car, don't do anything. At some point, you're going to take some risk, and it really is a risk/reward question. I think I can do this just as safely by breaking the rules."

It also may have been a way to convince rich people to help the company rake in $1M per trip. I suspect that the CEO’s willingness to make the journey might put people’s minds at ease.

I'm not defending the guy or sub, obviously it was sub par. but i never hear anyone talk about the fact that it dove to the titantic ~10 times prior to the last one.
