Are wheel locks necessary for a new car?

My daughter is picking up her new Subaru Crosstrek in a few weeks from the dealer. We live in Coquitlam and she will be parking her car overnight in our garage. Should she spend the extra $120 for the wheel locks? Silly question but if she buys the wheel locks will those same wheel locks also work on her separate winter wheel/tire setup?

Some dealers will charge a fee for mandatory wheel locks. Depends on the wheel

If you're worried about having your wheels stolen then go for it. Just dont loose the wheel lock key.

I absolutely deplore wheel locks. I wouldn't do it and any car I owned that has them, I removed the wheel lock and replaced it with a regular one. They're a headache and a half.

Who steals OEM wheels anymore? Maybe if they're special and high end... but for a Subaru? Nay

Wheel locks don't do much tbh.
Just buy 4 locks off amazon for $20 bucks (Just make sure they fit your car), and yes they would work on ur winters.

What warrants a mandatory wheel lock?

I've had 2 brand name wheel locks bust on me (insert bust a nut joke here) and then been left with having to weld sockets onto half broken wheel locks to try and turn them out.

They're not made out of the same quality metal as regular lugs, avoid avoid avoid.

I do still have a set of Project Kics tuner bolts for my Gram Lights and those work well and the locking lug is a lot better than those ones with a flower petal pattern imprinted on the top of them.

This was my experience at both Destination Mazda and Signature Mazda, neither would budge on the $75 wheel locks.

My Grand Cherokee came with a set of wheel locks in the glove box but the inner part of the key that would actually engage with the lock was totally sheered off. That would be mildly annoying during a tire rotation but a real problem if it happened when you got a flat.

I do use it as a theft deterrent by putting one on just hand tight when I've got my spare tire on the rear tire carrier but I'd never use them on the actual wheels.

I hadn't heard of wheel theft in forever but a few GR Corollas in the US have had theirs stolen. I think it's more of a US problem in general but idk.

when's the last time anyone here's got their wheels stolen? OEM or aftermarket?

i generally think these kids don't care anymore. The real thieves are too busy stealing cats and lexusususus for export to africa to bother stealing your rims.

Some of us are a bit more frugal (or we were stupid and got a variable mortgage) so we got the 992 GTS with the centre locks instead.

I had wheels and tires taken from my c10 a few years back, no comp coverage on that one. So now I run some sort of wheel locks or the gorilla spline drives on all my cars.

For a new car being serviced at the dealer I would say buy the manufacturers locks. They will be doing service, let them use the shop keys. It's the worst when a car rolls into the shop and we can't get their aftermarket wheel locks off.

Every dealer service I've been to at OpenRoad, they always ask for the location of the wheel lock key, even with OEM wheel locks
