Where to look for a modified BRZ or Toyota 86?

Hi,

I'm wondering if there are any specific FB groups to look for a Subaru BRZ or Toyota 86 within the lower mainland. I'm hoping to find one that has already been modified without having to do a lot of the work myself. I know there seems to be WAY less modified cars compared to the days I was into revscene or maybe at the time I was just way more into modified cars and saw more of them out on the road.

I have not been on this site in ages and thought the buy sell would be a good start but it seems to no longer active. Is this because almost all the cars are just listed directly on FB?

I know for boating people normally post up first on a boat site I belong to before putting it on FB/craiglist/auto trader etc.

Thanks for any help in advance

Facebook marketplace is usually the go to for good and bad. I miss Craigslist but it's pretty dead nowadays.

Autotrader for stock cars

Kijiji for outside of BC

UsedVictoria for Victoria

There's one other niche one but I don't remember what it is.

You do you. But a used modified BRZ/FRS sounds like a bad idea. Sounds like it's been beaten on since 2013. The technical writeups for aftermarket support should be quite vast for the 1st gen so I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult to find a stock well maintained one and build it right the first time around.

I can't say I would recommend buying a pre-modified 86 due to the kind of people it generally attracts.

My first car was a 2002 BMW 330ci, 195K KM, modified. I spent the next 3 years reverting it to stock or better parts and doing preventative maintenance. I ending spending about 20K and finally restored it to where I wanted it to be (OEM MTech 2 bumper, RTD shifter, MeyleHD control arms and bushings, Bilstein B8 + H&R springs).

Rather than spending all that time undoing something, it's better to buy stock and replace worn parts with aftermarket parts that YOU want. Cuz who knows, maybe once you're done the build you get hit by a fucking jeep.

I have to agree with donk.

Given the market for the GR86, BRZ, FR-S, GT-86, or whatever names come with this vehicle, they are demanding a premium and have proven their reliability and desirability.

Having said that, one argument I would counter is the notion of not buying a modded car. I agree that modifications can be subjective, but ultimately, it boils down to what was done, quality of parts, how it was done, and by who.

I would give consideration to an owner who has meticulous documentation and either does the work him/herself, or has a reputable shop to help with its credibility.

I've been searching for a 996/997, and came across a modified 996 that is both daily drive'able and a prepped tracked car that was taken care of by my local Porsche shop. I was really close to making an offer then the reality of insurance and being able to drive the thing regularly deterred me from doing so.

As they say, buy the seller. Not the car. (Sort of.) Happy searching!

P.S. - Can vouch for mb_. Super good guy.
P.P.S - I've been on the market for a good FRS/BRZ but of the ones I've looked at, they've been owned by buddy guy Harpals.

What's the cost of dailying a 996/997?

I'd buy a clapped out FRS if it was $10-14K.

Probably as much as the cars in your signature, but maybe a bit more?

Clapped out FRS for that price range is a bit out of touch. Maybe 5 years ago. Not anymore. I hope I am wrong.

The cars I own are cheap from my experience. if a 996/997 can be had for around $3-7K a year, I'd start to consider it

S2000
- Insurance - > $1,800/year full coverage. insured for 3 months.
- $0 Depreciation
- 12.9-14L/100KM - > $840/year in gas
- $140 in oil changes
- $1K for tires
- $400 for brakes and rotors
- $2K in fluid swaps, spark plugs, o2 sensors, cats, valve adjustments anything that needed replacement on regular maintenance over 6 year ownership
- $3K/year?

Velo N
- Insurance $2,200/yr
- Maybe $12K depreciation over 6 years?
- 10L/100KM - > $1,500/year
- $140 in oil changes
- Consumables are new + warranty
- $5,700 a year but I guess new tech and warranty has a price.

There was a manuel one posted on Sept 3, 2023, 2013 stock with 97k for $14K, thought that was a steal for the current market. But for the current prices, I'd wait for a rebuilt one for $10K if it's a beater

I paid less on insurance on my 996 with all the bells and whistles. I think around $1500 a year.

$140/year in oil changes is possible if you do it yourself, and if you use discretion on which oil you use. If you use Motul or some oil from God, it will cost more. $400 for brakes - again, if you use your discretion. Tires for $1K - if you get some cheap tires, maybe. Everything else, maybe'ish?

Set aside a slush fund for anything catastrophic. Good luck

If you are already used to paying this much for your current cars, 996/997 isn't so bad. might ruin your retirement plans but life is short and you only live once.

Ya, if you told me it was

- $400/yr for oil change
- $400/yr for fluids
- $1.5K for tires every 50,000KM
- $1K for brakes and rotors.

Plus car won't blow up on me, I'm in!

At some point, the potential bore scoring (make sure to get it inspected!) is worth the 10k 996 or the 25k 997

50K km for tires on a 911?

Stick with a Civic, please.

I am more familiar with Caymans / Boxsters, but I think a lot of 911's can only get ~10 to 15k miles out of a set of rear tires. The fronts tend to last at least 2x as long, or they just get replaced before they're worn out.

Then again, there are also 911 owners complaining how they couldn't even get 10k miles out of a set of rear tires.
