| PSA: Owner of 2022-2024 Subaru WRX Sedan (Orange)
I was at Aberdeen Centre yesterday (29Jun2024 around 15:00) and fully witnessed a dumbass lady crash into two cars while backing out of her parking spot. I noticed that she left scuffs on your rear bumper. Her car was silver in colour and I took a photo (Silver Dodge, license plate TJ5 83N).
The guy in the first car she hit, let her go. I guess they thought there was no damage so they didn't exchange info. Your car however, had silver paint transfer on black plastic cover of your rear bumper. Your car looks new and well taken care of so the damage was instantly noticeable.
Anyways, I'll phone ICBC and provide them with the same details. I know I'd be choked if someone hit and run me like that and no one did anything to try and help. Hopefully you or a friend of yours reads this post. Update:
I've reported the incident to ICBC online. Also managed identify the silver car as being a 2007-2009 Dodge Caliber. Hopefully some good comes out of this.

Oh she was most definitely Chinese (or at least Asian). Fucking embarrassing
her back seat was full of shit so maybe that's why she couldn't see clearly while backing up.

problem is I didn't take a photo of the WRX's license plate. have a look at the rear bumper and see if there's any noticeable scuffs. If they were at Aberdeen yesterday, it's more than likely their car.

Totally forgot to look in my junk mail for ICBC's response. They've asked for my driver's license number (even though I'm not one of the vehicles involved lol). I'm guessing there was a claim made that they were able to tie my witness statement to?
Guess I'll find out sooner or later |

In instances like this, the person who hits and runs. Is there any consequences for this type of action?
Or does this lady who left, just get charged with an accident on her record and then she pays both deductibles?
because if there are no consequences, what's the point of staying at the scene besides being a good citizen/person? Best case, you leave without a record on your driving history, worst case you have to own up for your mistake without any real consequence.

Hopefully her insurance premium goes up for having a “at fault” incident. But everyone gets that one freebie and it’s a sliding scale now. Given her limited economic means (driving a dodge caliber you peasant) this might hurt her quite a bit.

I’m sure there’s very little to no consequences.
I also love how the beaucracy ties up Spoon, the unrelated good bystander who actually reports it now and drags him into all the BS and has his DL number now associated with this accident. Kinda goes to show it doesn’t pay either way, to be the driver and stay around/report, nor the witness to help the individual who’s vehicle was hit

I'm only doing it because it'll help the innocent Subaru owner. I'd hope for the same if it was my car!

Guess I'll find out sooner or later | is that mandatory? seems odd you need that when you're a witness. you'd think at best a name and contact # is all you need.

It could be to prevent some jag-offs from false claiming a bunch of falsified witness reports under multiple "names, and random phone numbers"

This was probably 18 years ago.
Edit: I should clarify - I only reported by phone. There was no online option back then.

I submitted an online witness report recently and the form didn't ask for my DL. However, it did ask for my home address which they can easily match to my DL. https://onlinebusiness.icbc.com/efor...nformation.jsp |

A friend of mine works for Vancouver school board and one day he was working across the street from a storm drain that was badly backed up and creating a huge puddle that eventually started running over the curb and into a guys garage. He knocked on the door but no one was home so he called the city and reported it, at the end they ask for his name and phone number, he says wtf do you need my name and phone number for, you have the information, do what you want with it.
No one ever came the entire day and the guys garage was full of water, he figured the case was never processed because they didn’t have contact info..
Another time a friend and I were driving down the hwy 1 between Langley and Surrey and there was a fucking will sized couch in the middle Lane, it was also dark so it came up on us very quickly and we had to swerve out of the way. I right away called 911 and told them there’s a fucking couch and someone is going to slam into it any minute, get a cop out there. Again, asked me for all this info I was like uhh..ok..
A week later a cop phones me, “is this hondaracer?? You called in the couch? Ok *click”
Makes me very hesitant to do the right thing when I feel like it’s going to bite me in the ass somehow

One time we saw a mattress in the middle of the highway in Richmond, like right in the middle of that interchange in where it connects from 91 onto Knight street bridge north bound.
Pretty dangerous since it's in the middle of a big turn.
I think it took my wife almost 15 mins just to make a simple report because of all the questions that seem irrelevant... Made us feel like never reporting something again.

It took me 2hrs of waiting on hold for me to report a mitchell’s tow truck that fucked up a crosstrek that he was towing away from a crash, didnt put on dollies. Heard aloud bang three blocks away and confronted him.
I dont even remember if i got a “thank you” letter from ICBC for that one lol
That’s all you get, is a thank you letter. No bonus discount somewhere lol. Just wasted hours of my time

Kinda goes to show it doesn’t pay either way, to be the driver and stay around/report, nor the witness to help the individual who’s vehicle was hit | Unless the system has changed in the past few years, it seems like nothing really happens unless a report is filed with the police, which is a separate thing that the victim has to file themselves. ICBC doesn't deal with it.
I've had an unlucky phase where my car got hit-and-run multiple times within a span of a few years while it was parked. Had to deal with ICBC a bit too many times. The adjuster seems to keep everything pretty confidential about the other party. Only one adjuster went the extra mile to instruct me to file a police report because they were upset for me and wanted me to really "get him". I was like, what?? you mean this whole time, those other cases, nothing happened to the culprits?
Mind you, I had a dashcam for every incident so winning the case was super easy. Their premiums going up is a given, but, it sounded like it was on me to do the legwork to ensure the culprits get criminally punished for fleeing the scene. Seems silly, like it sets the precedence of low risk, high reward to just flee??
And the one time I did file a report, the police basically took down all the info, I sent them my dashcam footage, and they basically said ok... since it was just a vehicle accident with no injury, we get a lot of these every day.
Pretty much code for "they don't got time for this if no one got hurt." |

Enough reports on the same driver might motivate the police to do something. I gave info, was asked to go to the station..... Essentially put in way more than 15 minutes of effort and it resulted in a visit from the police to the registered owner of the vehicle. Cop said he did something about my report because I wasn't the first person to report this car for similar behaviour.

That’s all you get, is a thank you letter. No bonus discount somewhere lol. Just wasted hours of my time | I've been given thank you letters from ICBC in the past. Made me feel good for doing the right thing. I've also had appreciative car owners text message me to say thank you (when I had pen and paper to leave a note on their car). To me, the reward is helping each other out and it builds up good karma; as lame as that might sound lol. I had one person compliment me on my handwriting too |

I called in a drunk driver and tailed them until the police could get there... was pretty cool being on the line with the operator and them telling me that I should see headlights closing on me from behind soon and sure enough an undercover Fusion blasted by me on the other side of the road and threw all its lights on.
The cop actually called me a couple hours later to thank me, said the guy was arrested on spot and barely knew which way was up.
I think that shit goes on your file somehow too, cuz I got pulled for speeding like a month later and the cop chased after me to pull me over, he was super mad at me so I thought for sure I was done, but he went back to his car and then he came back later and said he wasn't giving me a ticket because I'd done a good deed and then walked off. I can only assume he was referring to the drunk driver thing?

The reason they want your info if you are reporting something to ICBC as a witness or calling the police to report a crime is so that they have the records in case things get challenged by the other party, or ends up in court.
A witness statement is a key piece of evidence and without proof the statement was made by a bonafide individual, it's easy enough for a defence lawyer to challenge the legitimacy of it.
So it's almost guaranteed that if you phone the police or ICBC to report something, they'll want your name and DOB at a minimum so they can follow up with you later if needed.
I guess you could call crimestoppers if you want to remain anonymous? I have no idea how that works though.
