I'm gonna guess they have to continually renew it and it's probably not cheap, so they decide not to. Or the refinery they are getting their gas from won't renew.

Top Tier is a pay to play qualification thing. Honestly all the gas comes from the same source here. As long as it's a major brand it should be fine (excepting finicky tuned cars etc)

Just stop paying.

Becoming a Top Tier certified gasoline retailer doesn't involve a direct fee for certification itself. The program is focused on ensuring fuel quality, and the costs are associated with meeting those standards, not a specific certification fee. Gasoline companies pay an annual fee based on the number of service stations they operate to participate in the program.

I doubt that untuned cars will notice the different additive packages.

Maybe maybe not.

Shell is top tier gas station and this happened. We where Shell branded back then. I can't remember if Shell was branded top tier back then.

i dont care about the performance aspect, i read that the additives package helps prevent carbon buildup on valves. thats why i say for the same money, why bother with shit gas.

The V power additives in shell is shown to have anti-carbon building properties. Given most of our cars are direct injected now, ill take it. Even toyotas with their D4S system (direct and side injection) still suffer from carbon buildup just less than a similar lousy VW that will need walnut blasting at 80-100,000kms.

I would assume that driving habits may contribute to carbon buildup and perhaps there is a correlation that may suggest additives in top-tier fuels help prevent, or rather, slow down carbon build up. We can assume someone in say Richmond who drives five minutes to the store has barely warmed up their engine, so the rich mixture when driving cold doesn't help the situation. (Not directed at you, Badhobz.)

And then you have bore scoring from Porsches. *yawn*

no youre absolutely right. thats exactly why for spy's RX i always try and fill up on top tier gas. Short city runs are the worst at creating carbon deposits. engine never gets hot enough to burn away the deposits.

I took her dads sc430 for the run to norcal a few years ago and afterwards hes like OMG its like a totally different car!! throttle response is fantastic! yeah burnt off all the deposits running that bitch at 70mph for 17h straight.

Isn't that called the Italian Tuneup?

Apparently not that effective for DI engines, and requires sustaining high load for a long duration to get the temperature high enough. I guess that's why it was helpful on a port injected (?) SC430, and to have done the long road trip.

Any of the big names (Shell, Chevron, Petro Can, etc) have their own pack of additives which are quite similar (check out Project Farm etc) so I don't think it makes a huge difference which brand you go to unless you're super religious about sticking to one brand. If you go to the tiny places (Super Save, Centex, etc) then yeah probably not as good.

I think carbon buildup is more of a driving habit issue than an additive pack/fuel issue. Most people won't drive their car long enough/hard enough to blow off the carbon fouling.

Anyway what if the truck driver forgets to dump the additive package in anyways lol.

i thought these additives are dumped in at the refinery. When they ship the gas on the tankers its already mixed in.

Im just saying, for the same price, why bother with the little shit brands or non top tier gas. its literally the same price. no point in risking it.

Nope they're mixed in on the truck at the point of delivery.

What do you mean gas from tankers? That's not how tankers work (or are you meaning the tank trucks?)

75-80% of the gas here comes from 2 sources: Parkland Refinery, or Shell Burmount terminal (via pipeline from AB and out east). That's for every brand. The rest comes from the WA refineries via barge. Each station/brand contracts with whatever broker to have delivery arranged, and the additive pack is dumped in when the tank at the station is filled.

As far as I know it's done at point of delivery (aka gas station).

Those of you who own gas station (Manic?) can clarify.

The smaller gas stations should re-market themselves as Local, Craft, Boutique Fuel Dispensaries: the additive packages are micro-brewed fresh daily, when the owner/operator gets in. His additives were hand-picked from the fish market at 3am when it was freshly hauled into port by the boats. So that you are guaranteed the most delicious performance.

fuel truck drivers in bc wa will tell you they deliver to stations regardless of brand

the additives and also maintenance of the tanks and lines on the station-side may not be insignificant

i still dont understand keeping the option of mid-grade though, when's that last factory vehicle or tune that specified to fill 89? the cost to having that 3rd option that's not diesel must amount to something

I’m more curious why you are taking your ultra reliable ancient Range Rover up a FSR. Do you have a death wish or something ?!?!?

I took the disco, I am still working out on what to sacrifice to the range rover gods to make it reliable.

Pourover gasoline for luxury brands. Run by a German named Dieter and an Italian named Mario. Only full-serve at these stations.

Is that even common anymore in the big city? All my nearby Shell stations are 87, 91, and 93 - I only saw 89 when I was out in the sticks (on my trip to Calgary this past week). I guess since Shell offers 93 that they can't make room for 89 unlike the other brands.
