For a rental car the ‘zero gravity’ seats are way better than the Corolla seats.
I swear those are made of plywood and cardboard

I bet anything's gotta be better than a Corolla. Toyota knows they could put zero effort into anything they sell, and still sell out of them.

Absolutely! But in this category of cars, the only thing that matters is reliability.

Thats the only reason why anyone would put up with an ugly piece of shit like this....

Civic doesn’t even have this stellar reliability rating, and the Sentra is leagues away from the Corolla reputation.

I learned to drive stick on that piece of shit - finding 3rd gear was always an adventure, I landed in 5th more often than not.

sexy. dis ratrolla is best ratrolla.

Its the one that my parents couldnt afford, so we ended up with that god awful Sentra XE.

If we would have bought the corolla back in the days, it wouldnt even have had A/C and manual everything.

The ECU changes to a different map and shifts gears at different rev ranges.

Actually this Corolla and other cars of this era has a 4 speed automatic, on older cars the O/D button allows access to the 4th gear for economy… you only turn it off when going down hills to help with slowing the vehicle.

The 3 speed came in the earlier model AE101 I think, not this jelly bean version.

The one that came after this one is the Corolla to have imo. But I still remember the soft velour rear seats of this jelly bean one, and that interior brings back memories.

I had to double check... Canadian brochure says the VE had a 3 speed option.
Overdrive button means it has a 4 speed.

Man, were 3 speed autos still super common in 1998? I know the Neon had it but man, those things sucked ass.

As if a Corolla would ever need help with something like that lol

I think growing up, I was less devastated to learn Santa Claus was fake, than to find out "Over Drive" didn't actually mean you activate some kind of turbo boost.

I don't know about you guys, but a 4sp in conjunction with the OD button meant you can hold any gear you want.

D od on = 4th
D od off = 3rd
2 = 2
L = 1

Poor man's sports auto transmission.

Brake into a corner, OD off downshift, turn and accelerate out. Pull it down to 2 if you need even more power to preempt the exit.

EK hatch

I had a CX trim. Manual, no tach, no AC, no power steering, no ABS.
I remember trading a guy a subwoofer, for the gauge cluster out of an auto civic. So I had a tach with the drive mode indicators

Those were the days. A purple civic, with a SRI, flooring from light to light barely hitting the speed limit.

I raced my buddy corolla when i was 16. He and i were neck and neck going down broadway. He manually shifted his automatic corolla like a boss.
