I found the torque converter to be RPM specific with the 4AT, once you hit a certain level of RPM I don't remember hearing it flare. Even with brake torquing it on autox starts, it still does the motorboating for bit before I get lock up.
Shifting up from 2 in a stress setting is hard though. Hondas have the lock on D -> N iirc, but Toyota doesn't so if you aren't delicate about it you'll push into N.
I had a CX trim. Manual, no tach, no AC, no power steering, no ABS.
I remember trading a guy a subwoofer, for the gauge cluster out of an auto civic. So I had a tach with the drive mode indicators
Those were the days. A purple civic, with a SRI, flooring from light to light barely hitting the speed limit.
Also learned to drive manual with no tach. Nothing like listening to the engine rpm and shifting gears. It was pretty sweet. Even after I got a tach I was pretty dead on what RPM the engine was singing.
