Thanks. It was around 5:45pm and the sun was setting. The sunset really reflected nicely on the gun metal color

Yup. They parked beside me (you can see the owners walking away behind the Audi) and didn't notice the 300SL(!). Needless to say, no one was looking at the Aston. Looks too much like corporate brother Jaguar XK8, IMHO. Everyone was rubber necking the Benz. I've posted these up before, and in those pics, you can see the Aston coming down the street and parking beside me.

Salar, different cars. The one you posted is owned by a guy named Mazenz right?

First one is owned by a guy named Anthony, thing is totally mint. Has smoked euro de's, smoked rear lights with BBS , umm can't remember, the old style 16inch deep baskets, 3 piece one. And the 2nd one is a white M3 stock, owned by...my dad :).

The original shot did not have colours looking like that. I did lots of photoshop work in order to bring out the colour details. Same with the water reflections as well. . . the original shot didn't show much detail from it so I had to "bump" everything up to give it that dramatic look.

Thanks for your comments guys. . . this is definately one of my favorite photos I've shot. ;)

~S I like this one a lot better than the red one.

The angle is better, and the lines flow better.

Just a thought....have you tried applying some photoshop "photo" filters to this pic? What I had in mind was the red of your car; perhaps use the filters to make it even more contrasty.

Doc
10-28-2004, 01:11 PM
EDIT: Ok I tried a different color filter (green), and I got the perfect contrast.
You're right Levitron, it looks much better.

Thanks.

I personally use a third party plugin for all the photo filter after effects (nik color efex pro 2).

But you could also simply make a new colored layer and play with the opacity/fill. PS CS also has its own photo filters (image/adjustments/photo filter).

Spiderwebs!!!! Wahaha....it needs a wax :D

I like this shot. Perhaps it's how the flare ends up being 1/3rd of the way into the frame.

What was your saturation setting for this? Looks like you bumped it up a bit.

domani..wicked as usual...

everytime i shoot car shots, i find that to expose properly for highlights the shadow areas are too dark.

great exposure!

are you mostly shooting on overcast days with light behind you?

np problem

i think the little details u mention is all about exposure... just
lucky at that moment...

post process in order of sequence
1. auto contrast
2. add more contrast
3. remove the plate number
4. crop
5. border (which all of u hate LOL)
6. save for web.

Thanks D.

for this particular shot, the sun was on the right of me and has already
been block by the mtn.... thus the soft lighting...

if possible, the light behind me would be best... and around
the dying day sun would be optimal...

and when u guys save for web, do you go high (60) or maximum (80)?

was not necessary

I usually do auto levels....and then manually shift the midtones to the right a bit too as well (move the left arrow to the right more).

Saving for web, I have a preset Action for saving to the desktop, at around 60. Reason for that? Web viewing will not really matter with a higher compression anyways. Usually means less bandwidth used, translating into faster loading images.

Which leads us to another very important topic in photography: PREPARATION!

Domani here did a scout of the site before hand, and found the location a day ahead in preparation for returning there for a shoot.

Usually if you want good results, this is what you would want to do. Same thing for sunsets.....trekking to a spot a day ahead and timing the sunset first, will mean a world of difference.

if the leftest arrow = midtones what do the other 2 arrows represent (middle and farther right ones)?

ahh, preset for saving onto desktop, i should do that as well... :) thanks!

[azn angel]
11-04-2004, 09:13 AM
no no.. wrong

with the levels palette open, the far left triangle is the black point, the middle triangle is the gray point, and the far right the white point.

Levitron
11-04-2004, 09:46 AM
Argh, what was I saying....too late at night!

What I means is in the RGB channel (instead of the individual red, green, or blue channels) move the far left triangle.

Dennis is right. Somehow I got "midtone" mixed up in there :(

It does a minor lessening of noise in pictures.

I do it sometimes, if I find the picture is too noisy....however, if you want a better solution to noise control, use Neat Image or a similar program (but it'll mean you need to spend more time on an image).

Dood, I'm on cable and it's still fucking slow as hell.

Use jpeg, not gif. gif wasn't made for that anyways.

Your file size could be 50k instead of 200k.

DaFonz
11-14-2004, 03:04 AM
Ok.. dood.. you have good pictures, but your site is stupid.

a) Stop using gifs for photos. You could cut down your file sizes by at least half by using jpeg.

b) You don't need to post 600k files on your site. It's actually bad for you if someone decides to rip off your work. Use compression. Compression is gooooodddddddd

PS: Nice pics... I got as far as loading the thumbnails and one of the blown up shots before deciding that your site was stupid.

You've got a great site in terms of design! and some very nice photos!

however to beat a dead horse, you're not creating proper gif's and jpg's for your site. all your images, even at that size, should be no bigger then 150k. on average your images were 550k +. Simply terrible by the laws of site design.....slow site means you'll lose your viewers because its too slow to load. web people are the most impatient. if it takes more then 2 seconds to load, it's too late they've moved on.

now, the way to make your files smaller in file size is to use the "save for web" feature in photoshop.
-open an image >> 'file' >> 'save for web'.
-change the view to '2 Up' by clicking the tab in the upper left of this window. you should now see your image twice side by side. one is going to be your original, and the other is to preview what your image will look like as you change the settings.
-Now select 'JPEG medium' in the drop down list of 'settings'.
-if you move the 'quality' bar, you'll notice the file size of your image (in kb) changes at the bottom of your image. i typically save my images around '55', play around and find a setting so that your image end up being around 100k. note-the same thing can be done with your gif menu buttons, except they should be around 100 bytes.

The font you used is hard to read at small sizes. i'd suggest making the font bigger, or change fonts.
http://www.jameswalper.com/images/MAINPAGE_03.gif<< too small!

Most "higher end" prosumer cameras and pretty much all SLR's have remote trigger, or remote cable release.

SLR's in general already come tricked out with IR sensors (if we're talking about Canon here) for a remote to trigger off a shot.

A remote cable release is I guess, somewhat of a more dated term referring to older type of "remotes" where it is linked via a cable to the camera. Some of the older types are pneumatic, some are just a cable/wire that you press, etc.

i'll be mounting a video camera onto the car for action shots.. it'll be real time video instead of 5sec exposures. i CAN fast forward it but the car's movements, and stuff wont be the same at slow speeds

haha damn.. crazy pics.. i was at skate plaza on sunday and there was some import model photo going on.. everyone was just skating doing their thing, and all of a sudden i pass by this ledge and i look back there was some HOT girl just spreading her legs.. i'm like WTF!! haha and i look around there are like 8 other people in front of her like 3 meters away or so taking pictures.. so then she moves up to the biggest handrail and shes lying down by the ledge that sticks out from the stairs that the handrail is on and i was skating the mannie pad which is right beside.. the dude who was taking pictures asks me "who can jump off of this drop here" i said "anyone of us here can" the guy reply "good, you do it" i'm laughed and i'm like ok... so i just ollie the highest drop there at plaza he takes asks me to do it 3 more times.. they took 3 pictures.. they showed me it it was pretty good.. the photographer had some expensive camera.. so it was a picture of her lying down posing while i'm in the background ollieing.. was like 8-9 feet high or so.. anyone else see it at plaza?! i asked the guy what was it for but he didn't tell me. i wanna know if it was on another site or something.. if anyone see it let me know, i was wearing a blue long sleeve shirt with a brown and grey striped beanie. black jeans and black shoes..
haha you guys take awesome pictures of those crazy sexy looking cars of yours :D!!! i'll get my friend who films me skating to grab some photos of me too.. i'll post them up hehe :P

1 exposure = 1 picture.
like how a roll of film has 24 exposures, meaning you can take 24 pictures. So what they're talking about is taking 2 pictures and combining them.

yeah
stacking.

Two exposures for when you have different things you want to capture in the pohoto with different light levels.

IE.. bright sky, dark foreground... room with lights.

You'd basically expose one frame for the light and one for everything else and then combine them.

Domani, what you said made no sense.. :D

I suggested two exposures so you could get the texture of the wall without having the light blow it out... i think it's really distracting especially since the car is pretty dark.

wrong term or not.

but anyhow, it dosn't matter, i know the light blow out i did it
on purpose, just adjust the contrast until my liking.

No, actually what YOU said didn't make sense.

He obviously knew what he was doing. He WANTED to blow out those lights, and over expose so that he could get contrast. In this case here, it's not about "going by the rules and getting a perfect exposture", but rather Domani wanted a shot where there would be contrast. Dulling the light would effectively cancel out all the "interesting" elements of this photograph.

And.....it IS called "stacking".

so in stacking, you would put the 2 different exposures/layers in ps and play with opacity or crop things out? or how would u combine them?

yep
pretty much....

u can stack as many images as u one.. as long as it helps u
get the final result that you like.

SHAT UP MAH FUCKING BABIES!

*sigh*

for starters, the term of the technique you're looking for is called a 'double exposure'! it's when you take two images without advancing the film to the next frame in the camera. THUS you get two images ontop of each other.

stacking is something done ONLY in ps. when you put two layers very simular incontent over each other in ps, and then make your adjustments (ie. dodge/burn/layer mask/opacity...etc). This is basically the electronic way of braketing with traditional film.

now ALL this aside domani mentioned this was the type of shot he wanted to get, high contrast. it doesn't mean everyone must like it, fuck, its art afterall.

lets just all try and be impartial when giving comments suggestions.

on that note, personally the above image is great. i love the blown out wall and really big dark shadow to the right of the image. they help balance the image.

what does bother me, is the rear glass. cause its green and i can see through it, bothers me. i would have tinted it all dark., easily done in ps.

It happened to come after domani's post, so fine I should have been more clear.

Gee... I must be stupid for not catching on what he was "obviously" doing.

What the hell is the point of a photography forum if you don't DISCUSS pictures. I was giving feedback based on my OPINIONS. If he doesn't want to take them and is happy with his photos, then all the more power to him.

whoa it's getting to look like fight club here :D i consider photography as an art. and AS AN ART everyone has their priviledge of taking a stab at it. if one considers his own photography as an art then you should consider urself as an artist. this is the hard part. no matter how inexperienced the audience may be in the field, they still have a sense of beauty and what looks good and what doesnt. so the artist's job is to take into consideration of what they say AND balance that with their original ideas, and ways of portraying themselves. it is this balance that makes a good piece. good art is what appeals to everyone, even if it is strange and odd, it still has to been viewed by everyone and anyone and get a reaction of "it works" from them. got art is not something that gets "great" from one group but "wtf" from another. this is what makes a good artist so hard to come by. i think we all should listen to what others have to say about our work that they are not satisfied with and adjust it accordingly while still keeping our own unique ways. this is the stepping stone to perfecting our skills.

to everyone!!!!!

i dont think the issue is on whether we should comment on each others work. You're correct, being in the photo forum is about showing off some work and hearing what people have to say.

I think the more important thing to learn here, is how to deliver the message/comments/suggestions. Because photo is art, and art is often a physical manisfestation of emotion, then one could be sensitive towards their photo. we just need to be sensitive to how someone else might take it.

sooooooooo, lets all be happy family and continue. yes we still want to hear your comments dafonz!

i don't agree at all :D here's why.

-i dont think artwork has to be viewed int he same positive way, for it to be considered 'good' art.
-what is 'good' to me, might be the opposet to the masses. what makes their perception of 'good' artwork more creditable?

ie/ look at maxim's photography. in a whole, i think its mostly crap. does it appeal to a large audience? YES!

when i read your above statements, in regards to the correlation between a widely accepted piece of art and 'good' art, i instead make the correlation between financial success and a widely accepted piece of art. i think if you want to be succesful financially in photography, you have to have images that are demand, therefore popular. if they're not, you'll have a hard time selling.

either way, imo, art is art. we're all entitled to draw the boundaries between 'good' and 'bad' art.

something to suggest, i find a car with a front license plate really, i mean REALLY, destroys the picture. its like such a little thing to take off, and can really break the lines of the car. just seems a little less professional witht he plate on. however, i understand, its not always your car, and sometimes time permits the removal of a plate...
