whoa thanks for all the input , yea i will be changing all the fluids within the next week or so . as for tires and lift i was thinkging of looking into something around 4' and would like 33 bfgs mudders , and for the lockers ... mind giving me some 101 lessons lol .. what will i need to do and look to get for getting lockers and what kind of work will need to be done ? , this is my first 4x4 not really a " mall crawler " i want something to bring out have some fun and drive to work the next day lol.... its also my daily soo....
get the bare minimum lift to clear the tires you want, rather than to look cool... on difficult trails, a minimum lift would be better than a big lift even though the big lift looks cooler and has more ground clearance...
with the minimum lift, your centre of gravity is lower, and it feels much less sketchy when the truck has a wheel in the air or is teetering, or is leaning to one side...
lockers ftw... my buddys bone stock 4runner with the factory E-locker in the back out wheels most jeeps with 35" mud tires, big lift and open diffs...

yeah,
you dont necessarily need a front one. if you have IFS a front one isnt really recommended although you can do it.
a rear one is a definitely a plus.
i'd go with rear locker, lift and tires for now. thats probably all you need to get your ass out of the most extreme situations that dont require winching.

Yeah I clearanced the shit out of it before I started welding (square tube) but it wasn't enough. I managed to fit a carbide grinding bit into the cv to clearnance it even more so I'll see if it blows apart. What time are you heading to triangle, I might see you there

3rd gen T4Rs any good? or 1st gen?
1st gen for bogger/dedicated trail rig.
3rd gen (with the 3.4L) if you want something you can actually use on and off the trail.
3rd gen you can also find one with rear e-locker to make life a little easier. Both are pretty capable on trails once you put a small lift and good tires on em.

Either way you can't go wrong. If you're looking long term project 1st gen might be the way to go but if u wanna mod slightly and do everything with it I'd go with the 3rd gen. If you check the 3rd gen forum on t4r.org there are some amazing rigs built up.

I'm down for some easy trails :) I drove it to Sumas Mountain and there's a gravel section that leads to a park that was pretty fun. I remember going in my IS350 and it was bumpy as hell, with the SUV it felt like tiny pebbles.

Thanks for the name, I remember he mentioned triangle something...He said it's pretty sweet at night, start a tire/camp fire and not get hassled.
Is it mainly hills or like a huge mud pit?
My suv is stock so I don't want to get stuck lol

06-10-2012, 04:15 PM
you always have a chance of getting stuck and it's a lot smaller then it used to. But theres some mud/water sand. It's alright for what it is.
I haven't been there for a year but last time I went with Phil@rise and we had a massive tire fire with skidder tires cause companies used to dump them there and theres a shit ton laying around.
We had to stand back about 30' massive flames good times, good times.
Haha nice I'll check it out with some friends just in case I get stuck.
I did have a question though, if I was to drive into a large puddle and water/mud/dirt splashes up into my engine bay, wouldn't that harm the car especially if it gets the alternator/distributor wet?
Sorry for my newb question, I'm only asking because I remember driving through very heavy rain once, (not in a SUV but in a 4 dr sedan) and the car stalled and stopped running from going through a puddle.

thats a Totron.. Side by side with a Rigid they look almost identical, output is about the same, price is much cheaper. For something you might bash when your wheeling, it made sense to go that route.

Its totally worth it, i have aux fuse panel in the dash, in the rear, and one in the engine bay. Also planned what other goodies i wanted and ran extra wires and relays for future expansion, all i need to do now is hook up power, a switch, then the aux item and they are good to go. Master kill switch in the engine bay which cuts power to all aux items incase of a short, or if i was to leave the truck sitting for a long time, it'll reduce the slow current draw.

Its got 4" of up and 4" of down travel. Its still really soft.Plus the tires are really soft at 20 psi so it rides better than alot of vehicles on the road.I do plan to move that diff 2" forward tho as anymore forward and I have no room for the steering box.The diffs are re-done blazer diffs with 5.13's and lockers

^hes got a point, depends on what you're looking for.
gonna be biased and throw it out there, for a new suv, 4runner.
the xterra hasnt been updated in a long while and i personally am not a fan of the looks.
4runners got a rear locking diff, rear solid axle, body on frame, skid plates, decent ground clearance, proper transfer case with 4lo and 4hi and other features were designed for off roading like the high air intake (i've driven mine with water to the bottom of the headlights numerous times). the fj cruiser has similar characteristics but i personally never really like the blindspots and the suicide door to get into the rear.
alot of hardcore off roaders will knock the front IFS but honestly if you're looking for something to cruise fsr's and do easy trails with its a good choice to go with.
pathfinder has gone unibody and independent suspension as has the explorer so i would rule those out.
if you're wanting to go american i'd get the jeep wrangler in rubicon trim. electronic sway bar disconnect with front and rear lockers. whats not to like? decent ground clearance and a retarded amount of aftermarket accessories to mod to your hearts content.
bottom line:
if you're going for a family vehicle to have fun in the outdoor i would opt for a 4runner, preferably in trail edition trim.
if you're looking to build up a crawler able to handle all that the trails can throw at you then go with the jeep wrangler.
my 4runner as it currently stands:

Thanks for the insight as the 4runner is the only non-american car I have been doing research on - and so far i'm liking it! The second car I am looking at is the 2013 Chevy Avalanche...heard good things about it and with $9500 off tagged price (2013 is its last year for the Avalanche) it's quite an offer.
I don't necessarily have a "use" for it other than driving around town and that occasional "offroading" in my back ally way haha. I'm more interested in just overall craftsmanship of the vehicle (ie. safety, reliability, comfort, torque....etc). Price wise, defiantly nothing over 50K. Thanks guys.
