That is the current picture, it is getting heavily modified again starting next week, it is getting a monster bore/stroke 460 (600+ FTLBS and 455 WHP) with a NP435 mated NP205 and a spooled 9". Along with the drivetrain beef-up it is also becoming a 4 door crew cab with a 5 foot box (ditching the reg cab). It already has the solid axle swap dana 44 and will eventually get a dana 60 instead. Here is the "concept photo-chop" of what it will look like very soon:

Stock for the moment.
Want to install aggressive 205/70/15's until i get it raised.
Least i can fling the mud a bit.

Will post pic when i get some.

Also its not mine, but i helped in building it.
77 Ford 3/4 ton 4x4.
We cut 16.5" out of the center of it, right behind the cab. to make it into a short box.
Lifted it 9" over stock, and stock is what? 4" on a older Ford?
Was running 38" Super Swampers. ( i believe )..

We could sit under it upright and work on the truck.. came in handy during the rain.. :p

Black, Duel steering stablizers, No Body Lifts.. they are just wrong in my area.. where am at..

Simple rule: if you want it lifted, lift it. Don't shime a body.. it's just not right.. ;)

No offence guys..
Will post pics when i find them again..

92 Toyota x-tra Cab 4x4 (my baby)

Has Procomp stagg 2 4" Lift done by north shore off road

Warn fender flares to keep some of the mud flying off the directional Yokohama 33"x12"mudders (since buying I have never got my truck stuck with em) with some nice looking polished alum mags.Smittybuilt chrome Nurf bars. One piece 4-runner chrome front bumper that's been shaved down for more ground clearance... (P/U's come with ugly 3 piece one.)

All lights are upgraded to all clear in front with h4 conversion as well and piaa 520 w/110w fog\driving lights.

JMD black tail lights and 55w back-up lights.

Box off frame clean, re-primmer, paint and under coating.

New rust free box.

Toyota rebuilt V6 on a recall (head gasket blew) had new short block put in had everything reground; new hoses water pump, timing chain, gaskets etc. done by Toyota. K & N aircharger intake with Downey stainless steel headers going into a high flow cat that is removable to drop in strait pipe after you take it to air care. Center Force 3 clutch.

3 coats of supra burgundy paint with two coats clear.

Thule Aluminum x-porter rack with Yakima cargo box to carry my snowboards and Thule T2 to carry my mountain bikes.

Full Panasonic deck, amps, and 6 speaker system with 10" MTX Sub. Custom made two tone black and burgundy seat covers to see what it would look like having entire interior done in those colors in leather at a later date.

95% of the brake parts have been replaced with Toyota parts. The other 5% didn't need to be replaced.

All parts on this truck are Toyota or higher quality after market parts.

This Truck started as a rusted $4000 beater three years ago. I have done all work on it my self except the lift, engine rebuilt, and paint.

damn there are some very sweet rigs on here...Marshal: your Sami looks wicked...

I just picked up my first ever 4x4...a 1997 Pontiac Sunrunner (aka Sidekick) with 143K kms. Not planning anything crazy for it now...sadly I have to keep it very fuel efficient (so far this year I've driven over 30,000 km). Bone stock for now...looking for a hard top then hopefully a 2 or 3" lift next year with some bigger tires (just picked up some generic 205/70/15s with some good tread for snow) gonna keep those on 'till they wear down then look at something more aggressive/bigger.

Oh yeah...thankfully it also has the 16v engine and the 5spd so it's actually a lot of fun to drive and holds up even on the Coq really well :) I'll post pics when I get home...and of course I'll post a LOT of snow pics this winter;)

I'mmmmm back!

Last month I traded in the Mazda 3 for a US model 2006 Nissan Xterra Off-Road (complete with factory locking rear differential). It was in mint condition when I drove it off the lot. I say "was" because a week later I scratched the shit out of it on my annual ranch trip north of Lillooet. Two weeks ago I took it up to Hale Creek with a few other Xterras. Other than some minor damage to some mud flaps and a few more scratches, the Xterra performed well.

http://www.enge.ca/~austare/ustare/gallery/albums//album471/IMG_0633.sized.jpg

I'm glad to be riding at a proper height again. Next year I'm planning on coil spacers (or coilovers) and rear shackles (and/or add-a-leafs) for 2.5" to 3" of lift and 33" tires. This year I need to get a tow hitch (no rear tow point on the Xterras) and a set of rock sliders.

Well, just got inducted into the 4x4 club as well, with a spankin' new 08 Jeep Patriot (in "Inferno Red Crystal Pearl"). Went with the North Edition package, but the cheaper version without all the nice toys (sunroof, Sirius, bluetooth, nav, etc.). Damn budgets.

Edit: finally got a pic of it:

Got the 2.4L mill, CVT2 trans, 17" rims. Pretty nice ride... no idea when I'll actually be allowed to get it muddy, since it's really the wife's vehicle

I built it up from a bunch of parts in a pile and bolts/clips everything in ziplock bags, guy tore it down and never finished it, it sat around for awhile.. Hey all,

Long time ago, was going to get a 1988 Toyota crew-cab (1.5 cab) Turbo diesel...alas, I last decided to get a car instead.

Fast forward to 2002. My wife's car died and she always wanted to get a Pathfinder... so she did. Never takes it offroading...so I do.

It's been a while so this is the most of-roading its done over the past three years.

Ok So Newbie here...

I just bought a 1995 Nissan Pathfinder XE-V6 in Vancouver as a budget 4x4 to move to the Island with.

Now I wanna do so many things to it!

I started with a budget but BUMPIN sound system from the boyz at elevated Audio.

Kenwood head unit with 2 10' subs in a custom box and a kenwood amp.

My pathy came with Firestone 31's but needs some work as they rub in the front.

Plans include a a busy bar, lights and a Calmini lift and a paint job and possible Maxi Crawlers...blue Scheme to match the head unit blue lights

Stay tuned for the project process...Pics to come soon!

My junk over the last while:

91 Ranger sport, 2" front lift, Rancho 5000 shocks, 31x10.5" Firestone Destination M/T tires (best mud/snow tire ever). I built this one up before I knew anything about wheeling.
http://photos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs018.snc3/12535_198672001549_647681549_4450124_3165884_n.jpg

Then I got tire envy and bought this, because it had 33's (which sucked). I had it for 6 or 7 days until someone stole it and destroyed it into a snow bank :( Fuck did I ever love that Jeep. Those flares were damn expensive.

Johnathan love your heep, lock that bisch up and youll wonder why you havent yet!

heres mine!
bought ol blue this time last year, just as a cheap beater in between nice cars, for $250 off a friend, which was a steal of a deal. it was really in great shape before i got my hands on it ;)

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w303/jeff_haut/DSC00644.jpg?t=1253990770

this is her the day after i bought her, instantly into the bush to see what this 4x4 stuff was all about
note how purrdy and clean she looks, this doesnt last very long unfortunatly

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w303/jeff_haut/DSC00648.jpg

this is not even half an hour after the first one haha

so then i did a bunch of stocker wheeling, and lots of snow wheeling and probably did more damage to it than i would like to admit, as to me it was still a "beater"
it had an overheating problem, it blew smoke like nuts i smashed the rocker panels into oblivion and every bummperet has since been monched on a tree somewhere or other
then i started really getting into it, bought some tires off Overland on here for a steal of a deal, so i HAD to lift it.
http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w303/jeff_haut/DSC00762.jpg

did some shopping ended up with a rubison express 3.5 superflex (altho now i wish i savedfor a couple extra months and did a long arm, but live and learn right)

http://i179.photobucket.com/albums/w303/jeff_haut/jeeping/DSC00880.jpg?t=1253991810
this is how she sat after the 8 hours is took to pull her off, stupid rusty stuff

since then its seen alot of offroad kms, added parts fixed stuff
total list to date (try to list in order of done)
6" spot lights
3.5 RE superflex lift
RE trackbar
31x10.5 bfg muds
aussie locked d35
custom tow hooks front
factory trailer hitch
factory ac fan wired off switch
new radiator
4.11's
aussie locked 30
hawk Plus front brake pads
stainless extrended front lines
96 zj 4.0 swap
good used aw-4
all new rear brake stuff
new exhaust (times 3 now fuck)
new tranny xmember and tranny mount
and ZJ steering

so 1 year ago i bought a $250 jeep, now i have a $250 jeep that i spent probably $5000 on

fuck

The 3/4 tons were drive flange so no getting in an out to lock hubs and were cheap. the front is a hdd44 and the rear is a ffd60 stock shafts I'd be surprised if I ever broke one. I never broke one in the original d30 front and had 36 swampers for years. Its all in your driving and how you abuse it which I don't (anymore).
Now its got coils in the front and drives soooo smooth.
I dont have much for pics but maybe I'll figure out how to post some up

do suspension lift first, before you do the body lift... OME springs, and crack the front torsion bars 3 turns, or buy balljoint spacers... body lift does not give you any more ground clearance...

just got a ton of work done in the last couple of weekends, pulled a few late nights to get new upper ball joints in, moog "cargo coil" rear springs and daystar 1 1/4" rear coil spacers as well as rear axle seals etc etc, just want to make it reliable. i need longer rear shocks so I'll probably go with KYB's since i can get them cheap. i'm also thinking of cranking up the front torsion bars or getting ball joint spacers to lift the front 1/2" to 1". i like the rear a bit higher because all the camping and fishing gear, tools and gas cans really weigh down the back. is it pretty normal to have a much stiffer ride after installing coil spacers? i'm guessing it has something to do with the progressive springs or shocks that are too short

http://i1129.photobucket.com/albums/m509/mickoak/photo1.jpg

that was taken before the coil spacers.

just soak your torsion bar bolts in penetrating lube first... and crack them 3 turns max... i suggest some manual hubs too, that'll help save your CV joints/boots...

OME medium rear coils were the best springs i found to put into the back of the 2nd gen 4runner... comfortable ride, yet capable of taking a LOT of weight in the back...

nickmak
10-27-2010, 05:07 PM
i've got manual hubs already, previous owner put them on. are there any down sides to having stiff suspension off road? i haven't gotten the chance to go anywhere to try it out yet. i don't mind the stiffer ride but i dont want to have any negative affects off road.

oh yeah i looked into OME springs to lift up the rear a bit but most springs lift 2", i only wanted 1 1/4 to 1 1/2" at the back and a tiny bit up front to keep it from looking like a dragster. but i've heard only good things about OME springs

drawbacks to stiff suspension off road? it's a very bone jarring ride... soft suspension articulates better...

OME medium rear coils and turnign your torsion bars 3 turns will level your truck...

yeah fluid level is fine, i changed the ATF 2000km's ago. it was screwy just that once and its been fine ever since, maybe it's got a sticking valve when its cold. at 350 000km i'm not surprised. i'll fire a new filter in and change the fluid again and whatever happens happens.

on another note, i finally washed it! i used a lawn sprinkler and this "flow through" brush thing to do under the truck and the wheel wells. worked great! good thing my land lords didn't show up, it was a mess!

You guys are gonna hate me but I recently bought 2 inch lowering springs for it ... going to add black srt8 rims to it, with new bilsteins and new swaybars (if I ever get the cash) ... or I may just sell the springs I have to get a lift, undecided on what route to take with it.

You guys are gonna hate me but I recently bought 2 inch lowering springs for it ... going to add black srt8 rims to it, with new bilsteins and new swaybars (if I ever get the cash) ... or I may just sell the springs I have to get a lift, undecided on what route to take with it.

trust me you want to lift it. Once it's lifted you will love it especially with all the options you will have in the summer time.

trust me you want to lift it. Once it's lifted you will love it especially with all the options you will have in the summer time.

I put the eibach springs on sale awhile back. I'm trying to get a crapload of courses done this semester and next semester so I can finally take a semester off to work, and save up some cash for the jeep.

I'd want a CV style front drive shaft to replace my Saginaw style one, and then I can actually add a nice lift (3 inch from iron rock offroad) and some nice 32's M+S tires, and new addco sway bars. With all that I'd be pretty happy. $$$ Is a huge factor for me though :(

It's surprising how much I can do on crappy M+S tires at stock height with the stock 247 transfer case and front and rear varilok differentials. But If I did go lifted, I'd lose my ability to screw with ricers who try to cut me off in the parking lane.

Decisions decisions ...

Hey guys, newbie to the forum here but this is the only place I can relate. This is my daily driver, however im hoping to jump into something a whole lot smaller and quicker sooner or later here.

91 Toyota Pickup - 3vze 5 speed SR5 Extended Cab
32 x 11.5 x 15 BFG Mud terrains - Bilstein Shocks all 4 corners.

No pictures of it playing in the dirt as it doesn't regularly participate in such journeys. Typically gets me to the top of the hill and to work!
Hope you all like it! Plans for it are replace the front fenders and cut the rust out of the box then potentially get rid of it.
Cheers!

Since we got a bunch of stock trucks I think a trip to some hot springs would be nice, we can either do Sloquet or the Clear Creek tubs (east side ones?).

Does anybody know the status of the Meager Creek hot springs? They were in a ski video I recently watched and I've been wanting to check em out.

we decided my truck has barely left the pavement since i did a ton of work to it, we went up to squamish saturday for a cruise and some fishing. awesome day to be out, i think the high was like 14. blew up my front driveshaft so we headed home. i fixed it up with a bunch of extra parts i had kicking around and we went up east harrison and jones lake yesterday. first time going to both of those places. theres like over 3 feet of snow at jones, so it was a no go. good weekend none the less!

Nice ride, orvis is pretty rare.

I'd probably suggest starting by changing tranny/diff/transfer case fluids and engine oil right off the bat so you know you got good stuff in there.

The 5.2's tranny is pretty bulletproof so it should last you awhile  I may be wrong but I believe there is a Mopar ECU upgrade for the 5.2 which makes it a little more fun to drive (or am I confusing it with the 5.9?)

lift and tires arent just for mall crawlers :suspicious:

nickmak
05-09-2012, 12:35 PM
I worded that wrong in a way. By mall crawlers i meant guys with huge bracket lifts and huge tires. Regardless, my IFS 4runner on 31" bfg mud terrains locked rear could out wheel my buddies YJ open/open on 35's same bfg's before we got his lockers working.. Apples to oranges I know but I've seen it a million times. Open diffs suck, lift and tires don't do much when you one tire fire on every obstacle. Hammering down can work but I'm not big on trail fixes. A good set of tires and just 1 locker can get you through some shit. But I like hard trails so keep in mind I'm not talking fsr's with small washouts. Just my 1.39

4 inch lift will be plenty.

my personal suggestion would be to go with the goodyear wrangler duratracs instead of the bfg mudders (i assume you mean the MT's). the duratracs will be a better all round tire, provide plenty of offroad traction but has the added benefit of having the mountain snowflake symbol which means it is very capable in snow (would also allow it to qualify as a snow tire at road checks on the way to hope or whistler)

a locker is an air or electrically actuated mechanism which locks the front or rear differential (depending on where its installed). the locking of the differential will basically distribute power 50/50 so that each tire is getting power. on an open diff system, the tire which spins the most freely will get most of the power. meaning that if you have a tire up in the air or in slick mud that tire will get all the power and you will stay stuck. if the diff lock is engaged it distributes the power to both wheels and will aid in getting you out of stucks. lockers are also a good preventative measure (i like to engage my locker for water crossings where i'm not sure what the bottom is made up of). lockers, lift and tires would be the best thing you can do for your off road rig.

as you venture out to other/farther/more challenging places you might wanna pick up some tools. basic hand tools are a good idea, a grease gun and knowing where the grease points are on the drive shaft and u-joint (good to do after water/mud crossings on extended trips), and a hi-lift jack and stands (if you plan on spending a decent amount of time in challenging trails).

cb radio can be helpful as well if you're travelling in a convoy of sorts but a VHF would be king. alot of the forest service roads (fsr) have active logging going on and have a vhf frequency channel posted. VHF also allows you to do call outs at the mile markers to allow oncoming trucks to know that you'll be heading there way. if you dont have VHF the standard is to drive with your headlights on and be careful.

if you plan on venturing out solo, recovery tools should be brought as well.
