These were taken during the first photo fieldtrip I took with my introduction to photography class...

Any criticism/comments/compliments are welcome..did I do something good? something not so good? something I can think about next time to get an even better picture? Since I'm still learning, anything to help me improve is very welcome.

PS: All pictures taken with my D90 with the 18-200 VR lens. Since it was a pretty nice day, most of the pictures were set at Auto WB, but I did play with Sunny and Cloudy settings for some of them. Also, I mixed around from using shutter priority, aperture priority and some manual as well.

I'd say the above image is your best one, as it tells a story. You're off to a good start. For wildlife photography, you generally need to get in close, so try to get in closer.

Ha ha I like the jump shot of the sparrow, good timing and focus.

Thanks. It won Picture of the Week on a Sony/Minolta forum. Everyone was commenting on the 'great' Minolta colours and the sharpness of the Minolta glass. I don't have the guts to tell them the image was taken with a Nikon D300 + Nikon 400mm f2.8 VR. I was also shooting with my a700 + Minolta 200mm f2.8 which I think may be sharper than the 400mm f2.8 though.

found the couple, they didnt like me getting too close. u can barely see them in the treetops. shot at 10mm

Boostslut
05-17-2009, 07:23 PM
Its at the North Dyke, about half way down to the tower. They have some small cones in front of it. Its very hard to see though, but you will see a V shaped branch. Follow to branch to the left to see it. I know it seems like a bad description but when your there you'll understand. The nest is VERY tiny. About 2-3 inches either way. The lighting isn't that great, so if you have it bring the 400mm F2.8VR if you can. There's two baby hummingbirds there, but i didn't get a good look at them. Go there while you can! I'm going to go back during the week to check it out again.

Thanks...yeah, there were a few people there...I commandeered the spot with the cleanest view. Hehe..

Were you there yesterday too? The BIF shots are great...I can't do that with the 400mm f2.8, as it's too heavy to move quickly. The hummingbird chicks still haven't opened their eyes yet, so they may still be there next week. I'm going back there on Sunday for sure.

Thanks Senna! Nope i wasn't at Reifel yesterday. I was at this place in abby that's a Blue Heron Sanctuary. There was the most i've ever seen there. Doing fly by's, going to their nests, resting on the tree's. It was pretty awesome, and we managed to get some what i think are pretty good shots out of it. What you see here are just a few of my fav's but haven't gone through all of them just yet.

I'd like to head out to see the hummingbird nest one more time. Gotta see if i can get wednesday off. Maybe bring the 5D mkII and 400mm F5.6L out. Decent reach and high ISO handling of the 5D would be good enough for me i think. Then after get some reach with the 40D. Anymore shots of your day at Reifel?

Hopefully they should still be around on Sunday. The only thing about going on the weekend, is that there is too many people there. Today i went at like 1030am and there was me and 5 other photographers there. The weekend must be nuts!

Setup for this shot was 5d mkII + 400mm F5.6L @ F5.6 ISO 1600 to get some decent shutter speed. The light there is different every 2 minutes!

...and fuck no. There's no way you can hand hold that monster for anything longer than a few seconds. The beauty of the 400mm f5.6 is its lightness (and sharpness).

Hopefully, the babies will still be there on Sunday. They don't quite look ready to fledge yet. Last Sunday there were only 3 of us shooting there, but yeah...word gets out quick, I guess.

question out of the blue... i found a big bumble fuzzy bee today on the ground moving and walking around. i picked it up with a sheet of paper and it wouldn't fly away. i recall another instance where there was one in front of my house and i poked it with my finger and it still didn't fly away. i think it ended up dying later on... do you know what these are? baby bees or injured? lol

Boostslut
06-09-2009, 09:48 PM
I mostly use it hand held or with a mono-pod. Its not heavy but my arms do get a bit tired trying to hold it up for minutes at a time. I would only give it up for a 500mm F4, or a 600mm F4. Its also fantastic with a crop sensor, just because of the reach you get. That's quite obvious though.

The close-up of the adult was taken yesterday at the nest at Vanier Park - just go down to where the boat launch is, and it's in the big tree to the right of the launching ramp. That nest isn't as high up as the one near Reifel, but it is obscured by leaves and branches. Gear was just a D300, 400mm f2.8 VR and a Manfrotto carbon tripod, no flash. The light was nice...the sun was starting to go down. I did crop it a bit so that the eagle's shoulder was pinned to the lower left, and the branch was coming in from the upper right.

It looks like I was up higher because the bird shifted its body and angled down a bit. You can tell in most of my other photos of the bird that I was shooting up.

This pic, however is of an eagle sitting very low in a tree, and very close. This is not cropped much.

I went to Reifel on Sunday. I heard from the staff that a Sandhill Crane chick had just hatched in the morning, so I went to see the little guy. The nest is way out in the marsh on a little island. I kicked myself for not having the right gear, as all I had with me was the D3x and the 400mm f2.8 VR. It was really windy, so it was hard to get a decently sharp shot.

Here is a full-frame shot of the nesting area.

If anyone wants to go see the little fuzzball, I've marked the best spot to see it indicated by the white arrow. There is a dip in the salmonberry bushes to the left of the viewing hut there. Point your (at least a 400mm) lens through the dip towards the little island where the nest is, indicated by the white dot. Hopefully, the second egg is viable, and the first chick doesn't get picked up by a heron or eagle. The bald eagles were circling the nest, and a GBH did a fly-by, so they know it's there. I apologize for the poor quality photo, but it's the best one I could find.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v249/Senna4ever/Photos%20II/view.jpg

Funny story: David Suzuki and his family walked by as another photographer and I were shooting the chick. They asked if they could look through the cameras, and of course we let them. As his family (his wife, daughter and husband) were looking through the cameras, he was standing back between the two cameras chatting with me, the other photographer and the Reifel staff member. Dr. Suzuki's wife asked him if he'd like to have another look through the camera when he replied, "Naw, I'm just waiting for an eagle to come get him." :lol

I was there for about 30 minutes. The bird took off and came back with the salmon and started eating it...I have no idea where it got a salmon from. It wasn't gone for long, and there are no salmon in False Creek. There is a chance that it stole it from one of the fishing boats there. There was a huge crowd watching the eagle eating the fish.

Senna, you gotta check this out at Reifel!

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3523/3982222739_e76e898d12_b.jpg

There's a group of 16 Sandhill's hanging out there. Bring LONG glass, and a 1.4x or 2.0x! My 400mm on a crop wasn't enough for what i wanted to get. There was a guy with me who had a 300 2.8 + 2.0x and it was still quite tough. i was talking to a gentlemen there and he said go right at open at 830am on weekdays to get some great shots of them. I was there in the afternoon when they weren't doing much.

You know where the tower is, and you walk the long way around the outside of the area, and basically in the middle of the ponds. You can't miss them, there is a whole punch of them there. Pretty cool!

That setup should work out fine, you might want a 1.4x to get a bit closer. Its very windy too, so a good solid tripod would help too.

Time to resurrect this thread! Its Brackendale time! You guys gotta check it out, its got some great action! Found some good spot's too! Went on Saturday, and Tuesday. Gotta love having a weekday off every now and then. Most likely the last time i'll use my 400mm F5.6L lens. Gonna miss it alot! Anyways, here are a tiny bit of what i got. Only the eagle was at Brackendale, the other one was behind YVR at Iona Beach. Will post more Brackendale shots soon!

Most likely my fav. eagle shot that i got the whole day

I don't know what these are called, but they were pretty cool to watch. Was in the right place at the right time to get this shot. I waited around for 15-20 mins. Right when the run was going down, with the sun at my back.

Went to Reifel today...my first real outing with my new 5DmkII. I got there at 3pm, so I only had an hour to shoot, and the light was getting bad. I didn't care, because I really wanted to give the 5DmkII some exercise. The 7D had the 500mm f4L IS attached, the 5DmkII had the 70-200mm f2.8L IS attached.

Boostslut
12-29-2009, 05:36 PM
i think the 4th one is possibly a bit soft around the feathers, but when i look at the whole image its quite sharp around the eyes and beek. The others are quite sharp though. Most of them are crops of some kind. I would like to get the 1.4 pretty soon for some more reach. It's amazing how in birding there is never enough reach.

Saw a guy at brackendale with a 1d body, a 600L, a 2x and a 1.4 stacked! Crazy!

edit: took the fourth one out for softness, so now its different.

These were taken at the "soon-to-be-closed" Conservatory at QE.

You guys have amazing photos! I'm so jealous! Great stuff!
I was walking around Burnaby Lake the other day and I snapped a few photos of this bald eagle that was just hanging out but I'm not 100% satisfied with the photos I took. I know I can do better!
Does anyone know if there are some eagles at Brackendale Park this time of year? I checked their website and it only says that their peak season is December to January due to all the salmon that goes through the river. Has anyone been up there lately? I just don't want to trek out there and find nothing but I'm assuming there should still be a bunch of them hanging around.

Please help!
Thanks
Mike

The eagles are almost always there by the entrance to Westham Island. If they're not there, then go to 72nd St by Boundary Bay Airport - guaranteed you'll see eagles. Also go to:
- the boat launch at Vanier Park. There is a tree right next to the Coast Guard Station with a huge nest there.
- the parking lot at Hastings & Renfrew has a tall tree with a nest. The eagles are always hanging around there.

The hummer's are starting to be out which is always fun! Would be nice to find another nest somewhere at Reifel. Look forward to seeing your birding photo's over the next few months! All you other birders here should get out there too! Senna is running the show around here! haha..

Really jealous of all the photos guys. You all have great photos! Keep it up!
I went out on Friday and Saturday searching for birds and I came back empty handed... sort of.. Went to all the places Senna recommended and I came back with possibly two decent photos but I'm still not happy with them. My 18-200mm VRII can't catch them close enough. I need a massive lens. 400 or higher. I'll have to try again and again.

Post 'em up! :) For birding, you'll need a minimum of a 300mm, unless you go to the Reifel Bird Sanctuary, then 200mm would be the minimum, as the birds aren't as shy of Humans. Yes, a 400mm or a 500mm would be much better if you want to get in real close. Sigma's 50-500mm is a good lens, which is relatively affordable at around $1200 - just make sure you get a sharp unit. Of course, a 400mm, 500mm, 600mm prime is much faster, sharper, and more contrasty but those start at around $7000+. If you want to see what a 300mm f2.8 VRII, 400mm f2.8 VRII or a 500mm f4 lens can do, I can let you try one sometime.

Those are the best that I got when I was at Reifel. I noticed the Eagle when I was approaching the parking lot and I immediately jumped out of the car, followed up and waited until the bird took off. I swooped down fairly close over top of me so I was able to snap a few. I saw the huge nest right beside the bridge to Westham Island snapped a few as well but like I said I need a better lens. I'm eager to try again. I already marked the dates on my calender in December to head over to Brackendale and try it out there as well.

Is it just me or does that Nikon 500 F4 hood look enormous? My 500L hood is much shorter. Also, what tripod setup do you use? Do you have a gimbal head when using the 400 or 500?

Holy shit, you know him?? Small world! I can't remember his name...he's always shooting the Vanier Park eagles with his girlfriend. I first met them at the hummingbird nest at Reifel last year - I think they're both PhD students at UBC.

Australia has the White Sea Eagle & the Wedge Tailed Eagle. Go shoot them, dammit! Also get shots of wild Cassowarys.... :D

I use a Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 carbon fibre tripod with a 4668MGRC2 head.

I thought the 7D had good AF, but the 1DMKIV is on another level. The AF with the 500mm f4L is slow due to the motor in the lens, not the camera. The motor needs to move a lot of glass, I guess, but I have a feeling a Nikon D300s + 400mm f2.8 VRII just might be faster in acquiring focus. Pretty sure the 1DMKIV is better at focus tracking though.
