From now on, all bird photographs will be posted in this thread.

Big birds, small birds, white birds, black birds, ugly birds, pretty birds, sexy birds......

In a few months we'll marinate this thread and have a feast.

heh, i guess i'll start us off.
the only good thing to come of this will be to show how much better everyone elses pics are haha.

and... here we go!

http://members.shaw.ca/jpeligal/DSCN2850.jpg

http://members.shaw.ca/jpeligal/DSCN2852.jpg

so while i snapped these other shots... there was this bird, not just any bird, the devil bird. shortly after this photo was taken i was violently attacked by a tornado of wings, beaks, and claws, while it was trying to tear my back to shreds with it's claws and beak, i remembered most of my "in case of fire" training and neglected to stop and drop, but did manage to roll(spin) and run my ass outta there...

http://members.shaw.ca/jpeligal/DSCN2857.jpg

hope everyone enjoyed these.
don't bother to c&c this unless you have some point and shoot pointers :D

He has a 300mm f4 L IS.

Jomo
02-15-2006, 05:17 AM
300 f/4L IS + 1.4x teleconverter + 1.6x crop factor sensor = 672mm f/4L IS... kinda.

I really want a true 500 f/4L IS though... it's my dream lens.

Mana: My 300 stays with me! I got lucky with a damn sharp copy from the store, the only way you'll pry that from my grip is if I'm dead or I replace it with a 300 f/2.8

Actually the 75-300 IS USM is not so great. ITz better off getting a 1.4 or 2X converter. I've tested the 75-300 at work and it's not so great. It's small and light though. The 70-200 F4 is an awesome lens for sure...I miss mine, wish i had kept it (sold it for a 70-200 2.8 IS) as a lighter alternative on more casual shoots.

what lens is that for your last shot.. looks tac sharp with great color.

70-200 F2.8 IS is an insanley expensive lens... when I am indoors or even outdoors I wish I had it.. but man o man the price just chops u in the face...

Still need to find a 67mm CPL for my 70-200

BTW quick question is everyone shooting RAW and PP in photoshop... custom or just set "as shot" or are you guys doing jpeg?

You're talking about the wrong lens. The 75-300 IS USM is crap. The NEW 70-300 IS is producing very nice results. I've seen some top knotch L quality photos.

how are these?

Senna4ever
03-19-2006, 09:49 AM
Nice captures, but they're very contrasty, unsharp & overexposed. The crane on the very right attacked me last time!

77civic1200
03-19-2006, 10:18 AM
Contrast- ya thats my lack of photoshop experience, how much is too much

Unsharp- these are actually the first 2 pics I tried to sharpen in PS? maybe I did it wrong lol

Overexsposed- yep, I do that a lot, wish I could see it on my camera better, I usually don't find out till I'm home =(

The grumpy crane- He's mean eh, I actually have a funny shapshot of him attacking a young couple that were trying to walk past, the look of fear on the womans face is priceless

dub.dub
03-19-2006, 01:11 PM
^ post it :D

what camera are u using currently?
too much contrast is if it starts to look unnatural unless u intended for that look

77civic1200
03-19-2006, 01:48 PM
Actually I usually am trying to make it look more "natural" I find that too many of my photos look really dull versus what my eyes see when I'm taking them. I'm using a Canon S2is, I currently have 'vivid' turned on for all my manual shots. I don't really know what it does (ADD has made reading the manual really slow, I'm half way through and I've had it since last spring =)
I just found that I liked my photos better straight off the camera with it on.

If I posted the originals, could you show me how you would play with them?

Here's the quick snap of the crane, there was no setup, I didn't even have my camera out when it stabbed at her. I just think its funny that she looks so scared, and her guy is laughing.

http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/3733/img49859pg.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

*oh and I didn't change anything in this one besides resize/border, does it look to contrasty as well?

That one looks fine. I like the expression on her face. Did you crop your other pics? Maybe that's why they look a little soft?

I cropped the owl one a bit, just to get rid of some wasted space on the right. But because of the resizing, its not like it really zoomed in on it.

Oh, now that I looked at the original again, boy did I ever use to much contrast. I should keep a version of that open to compare to next time, I didn't realize how far it had gone =) oopsies

Thanks. I've posted this before. The light is great because it's evening light. Nice golden hue. That pic was taken with my 50mm macro, so I was about 3 feet away from it. The fucker bit my lens just after I took the shot.

What camera do you have? It may be because of a small sensor that the image is kinda off. A polarizer won't degrade an image like that. A polarizer will take the sheen off a bird's feathers. Too much PP?

Here are few of my shots. Just starting to get into bird photography so it's nothing as "extreme" as Tom's eagle or Kyle's humming bird, plus I only got a 300mm :( :p

That was a few weeks ago in brackendale. I am thinking of going up on monday, kinda waiting to see how the road will be, wouldn't mind some snow on the ground for the shots. Let me know if you want to come, will probably try and head up early cause they are supposed to be most active in the mornings though I have yet too see it.

I'd actually love to try out a long prime, my sigma can be slow at times. Let me know whats available and if theres a rental fee =)

Next Sunday? I should be ok. I only have the Canon 100-400 L, but I can bring the 400mm f2.8 or 500mm f4 in Nikon mount. I'll bring the D300 and both of those lenses if I can.

When bird shooting, and that kind of lens, would you use a tripod? If so what kind?

Also, what lens is that, its a beast lol!

It all depend how far away the animals are. You'll need a minimum of 200mm for wildlife though. A tripod or monopod would be a good idea...make sure it's not a cheap one though.

The lens on the left is a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 AF-S VR. The one on the right attached to the D300 is a Nikon 500mm f4.

The big one is not a zoom. It's a 500mm f4 prime. It weighs 8 pounds!

I was just out for a walk with a friend and her kid near Jericho to feed the ducks, spotted a hawk on the frozen pond. As I walked closer I noticed about 10 photogs off to the left all using huge glass. I was talking to a lady for a bit about what it was eating, when her husband asked if I wanted to try his lens (I only had my 85mm with me) I couldn't turn down that chance.
