i've seen Launchers. big, ugly. i don't blame him for moving away from them.

EXV603
06-11-2008, 06:07 PM
its not that i dont like them. like nvm said, theyre big and ugly as well as old. i just think its time for an upgrade.

ive hit my buddy's ping i3+ irons at the range a few times and i cant really say what it is but they just feel alot better when i hit the ball.

what im expecting is maybe a bit more distance and accuracy out of a newer set.

N.V.M.

my next set of irons will be those new Wilson Staff CI7's. tried them @ GolfTown, feels great. awesome reviews. very funky looking graphite shaft technology on them. but the heads looks nice when looking down on them ,at address. thin,pro-looking. i do like my cheap Tommy Armour's still, shot 8 straight games in the 80's with them, but they have a very low kick point. nice for getting them up in the air and dropping them on the greens, but they lack distance.

N.V.M.
06-16-2008, 08:18 AM
Predator Ridge, wow. talk about tough greens. makes you really appreciate how good pros are. so fast and so many holes with different tiers, you really have to be deadly with your approach shot. not just get it on, but get it close. the fairways, magnificent. they were setting up for the Skins Championship coming up this week, and there were tv towers all over the place, the fencing for the galleries were being put in place, etc.

have you golfed much before? or are you a pure beginner? if you want to start from scratch most golf courses will offer beginner group lessons which is a good foundation and you dont have to spend alot.

if you are looking for something a bit more specific then private lessons are great. one on one and tailored to whatever you want, but it can get a bit pricey (unless you buy like 10 lessons at once but thats maybe $450+ depending where you go) if you are interested in some private lessons PM me i know some pros i can recommend for you.

i went to that Perfect Lies tent sale this morning on Byrne by Riverway golf course and got me an Adams A3OS 5 Hybrid. nice club! so effortless to pop it 180 yds. makes a cool "ting" noise when you hit it. it beats the crap out of my TaylorMade Rescue hybrid. Boxer technology FTW.

i am interested in buying my own golf set, but don't know where to start! i guess i missed the perfect lies sale... but i don't want to go there and don't know anything and get ripped off

i am a semi-noob (i can maintain doing par, or +1 for pitch and putt), never play the big course (i'd love to if i can get my own stuff), i'd say i played about ~15 times in my life.

is 200-300 going to be enough?

thanks!

every major brand has clubs at every price range.
the best advice i can offer is to try all the brands in your price range and choose from them based on comfort level and results. i would suggest going to golftown because they have the simulator. it gives you an opportunity to 'test drive' the clubs and they have a huge selection.

Anyone know of some good driving ranges where you can hit off grass?

the_rickster
06-23-2008, 08:53 AM
the closest place that i can think of is in kelowna... but university moves their range stalls onto the grass on nice days... if you're discreet about it, you can move your mat out of the way and hit from grass.

dspot
06-29-2008, 02:37 PM
Wouldn't they be a little annoyed to find a bunch of divots there later?

Only reason I want to hit off grass is because I'm hitting it great at the range but on the course I catch a few shots fat every round. The range mats are way too forgiving in this way.

the_rickster
06-29-2008, 03:04 PM
oh probably... which is why the majority of ranges provide mats.

why anyone tell me why people play golf and drink beer?

i was just at pitch and putt, the group in front of me was drinking (got caught) and the group behind me was drinking and holding a plastic bag full of beer..

wat's the rationale behind this? i thought golf was a elite sport.

the_rickster
07-18-2008, 08:52 AM
the ultimate warm weather sport is golfing, the ultimate warm weather beverage is beer. need i say more? in all seriousness, though... you're right golf is considered an elitist sport, and if you're elite, you should know how to control your liquor intake. there's a huge difference between a few social beers and getting fucking shitfaced before the turn. people who pay $15 to hack it up are more likely to be smuggling beer and getting loaded than the group who pays $150+ for a round.

most pitch and putts dont allow you to bring beer on the course because its a family oriented place, most larger courses don't allow you to bring beer because they want to sell it to you either off their carts or in their clubhouse.

i haven't played golf in about 3 months. for some reason, i've lost the urge to play.

last time I played Greywolf with my uncle and a couple of his associates they had a 26er of Fireball and a 30 case, and these guys each probably make over 200k a year lol

everyone likes to have a couple pops out on the course, of course your gonna get busted on a little dinky pitch and putt, but on the big courses when your paying $100+ to play, im sure they dont mind a beer or 2, it's a social thing

Yea. A lot of the fairways were tight and there were two that I remember where you couldn't even see your drive. You had to rely on the GPS and such to figure out where to hit. Friggin' hard.

I think on that first hole there, its about 220 to the bunkers.

miznorthvanmike

Golf shoes are important for a proper stance and balance. I have never golfed without proper shoes. I wear Footjoy and or Nike, and depending on the style (narrow/wide) I wear same size as street shoes. If you are contemplating buying a pair, make sure they are water resistant at the minimum or waterproof, the dew on some early mornings can penetrate and you end up with wet socks.

Fraserview. $50 for 20 tokens, 40 balls = $0.0625 each ball

everything about the fraserview range sucks.

i cant remember how much a bucket costs, but musqueam has a fairly decent set-up. give them a shout and see what their rates are.

or if you want to throw down an investment of $225, university will give you 50 tokens, which is the equivalent of $0.075/ball

I was interupted while reading your post and misread what you wrote. You should have heard me cursing you....I read (quickly) that you "should ditch the office and play around....my girlfriend is in early labour" . I won't tell you what went through my mind............I humbly apoligize

From experience, early labour can last 2 days (trust me, I went through it).
Go have a game and relax....it will be your last time for awhile :)

And, incase I miss the annoucement.........congratulations to all on the birth of your new child

weather should hold out for you hopefully. i drizzled a bit over here at fraserview from about 5-530am and looks like it'll be decent for most of the day.

I've never been to Golden Eagles before, looks nice on the website. Is it anywhere near Pitt Meadows or Meadow Gardens? Those are the only ones I've played out there...

hey guys, problem..

i got myself a cheap beginner set at sportschek, but there seems to be a problem..
at first, i got a set of Dunlop DDH for $200, but after a week or so, my driver dented and cracked.. so i went back to sportschek and the manager was nice enough to let me return it (i used all of the clubs already)

now, i got myself a set of rams, because it was stiffer and i got a pretty aggressive swing.. (the dunlop feels too light). it's perfect and it's only $129.99!
however, i was hitting at the driving range for these couple days.. after about 40 balls on the driver, it started to DENT AGAIN! no cracks yet.. but i am sure it's going to fuck up soon.

is it me or the club? i gotta admit i swing pretty hard..
the dent is at the back of the club face.. you know.. the back part when you lie it on the ground..

and no i didn't drop it. give me some pointers! should i keep it and wait for it to break and go buy another driver, or just return it to sportschek again?

thanks guys!

if your getting dents on the bottom of the club, you must be contacting the bottom with something. if you dont hit any of the poles or stalls aroudn you, it must be a ball or something. do you top the ball?

i've seen clubs dent at the bottom because of topped balls so its not uncommon. i've seen it w/ expensive drivers and cheap ones, just that part of the driver isn't made for ball contact thats all. if its from an inexpensive full set i wouldn't worry too much about it, just whale away man.

You're lucky you got a refund after you dented your first driver. If you are hitting the ball with the face, there's no way it can dent on the back of the head -- it could maybe crack on the face. You must be doing something like dropping the club on the ground or topping the ball as mentioned.

Also, if you're just starting out I would suggest taking easier, more controlled swings for a while until you can consistently make good contact.

I'm in the market for new irons. I went to golftown and swung the X18s and X Tours as they're both on sale. I have '04 Big Berthas now so I'm slightly partial to Callaways. Anyway, I liked them both but found the X18s were a lot softer to hit because they're much more forgiving. So now I'm in a rut. Do I buy the more forgiving club that are basically no different than what I'm using now? Or do I buy the X tours which are slightly harder to hit, but will give me something to work on?

The main reason I'm buying new irons is because I'm taking lessons in the offseason and want a new fitted set to learn properly on.

I think I'll go down to Birdies and Buckets in Surrey and hit the Callaways as well as the R7s and even try some Nikes. Its nice they have a golftown right there at the range. They'll tape anything up and let you hit them there rather into some video screen.

FYI - Costco has an awesome deal for Whistler Golf course. $100 for a green fee, bucket of warmup balls and a $15 food voucher. Played it last weekend and it's easily worth the drive. Very well maintained course as you would expect.

my boss just gave me two of those as a little bonus. sold them on craigslist for $150 in a few hours.

btw, if you have the $$$ and you like Callaway, try the FT series of irons. wow, they hit like butter. the caveat though is that everybody hits differently, and just because you get the most expensive, newest technology equipment doesn't necessarily mean they're the clubs for you. i read once golfers should'nt pick the clubs, let the clubs pick the golfer. so true. whatever you get, make sure you try them out first, preferably in a few rounds of golf. hard to do, i know. also, make sure you get them fitted for your swing and body type. if you are tall for example, order them long from the factory(most stores will do that for you). don't get stock length off the shelf and later on get them lengthened from the fitter(lengthening/new grips=$$$$$).

Hey

I'm looking to start playing golf. thing is I'm an absolute noob and I don't feel like throwing a few hundred for a set of clubs. What should I look for when buying used clubs say on craigslist or buy and sell?

rb
09-03-2008, 09:22 AM
^ the right shaft flex, grip size for your hands, club length.

the_rickster
09-03-2008, 09:34 AM
that's a pretty broad description, but it's true.

look for something that is easy to hit (big face, big sweet spot), there are two types of irons, cavity back and muscle back. go for cavity back and something that will compliment your swing power... if you really want to learn from square one, buy graphite shafts and swing slow, focusing on contact with a flexible shaft is easier that gripping and ripping.
grip size, don't worry too much about it because grips are cheap (relatively speaking).

if you dont feel like throwing away hundreds, you're not going to get a great selection, so go find a set that look like their in good shape and once you get a feel for it, try some new ones.

rb
09-03-2008, 10:22 AM
I should have elaborated futher..

Choosing the right grip size - A grip that is too small will cause the club face to close prematurely and lead to a hook. A grip that is too large can cause the club face to open at impact, resulting in a slice. Used sets are often regripped with the previous owners specs. Regripping a whole set can run anywhere from $40+

Choosing the right length isn't that big of an issue b/c most are standard. Although, "standard" men's length varies from manufacturer. Also some of the clubs selling on craiglist are often lengthened.

Stay away from something too light in flex b/c you will regret it later on. Can't really go wrong with regular flex for someone starting out.

ewong
09-04-2008, 11:27 AM
I dunno if I"m standard height though. I'm like 5'5. So grip isn't too too important then?

and I'm assuming I should look for something without too much wear and is bout regular stiffness?

the_rickster
09-04-2008, 12:06 PM
i'm just saying dont overlook a set of clubs because of the grips, as they are easy and inexpensive to change.
every golfer is different and will likely all have different ideas of what is important. the best advice is probably just to spend an afternoon looking for clubs... hold them, swing them and feel them out.... whichever one feels the best, go for. my advise to get clubs with a lot of flex is just my opinion. if you decide you want to commit to the sport you'll be getting the itch to buy new clubs anyways, so i would start with some flexible so you can focus on contact instead of swing speed and contact.

here's a good tip to finding a club's sweet spot (and also to find out how big the sweet spot is):

hold the club so that the grip and/or shaft are being held under your armpit and the club head is being supported by the palm of your hand with the face up (club is parralel to the ground). with your other hand, hold a loonie or a toonie edge up (one finger on queens head, one on animal) a few millimeters above the club face. let it bounce on and around the club face... wherever you start to feel a lot of rebound is where the sweet spot is... the more good rebound you get around the face of the club, the bigger the sweet spot... the bigger the sweet spot, the easier it is to make sound contact with the ball. you can either mark the sweet spot with an x or just remember it when you're at the range.

rb
09-04-2008, 04:59 PM
Go with the_rickter's advice as he explained it best.

I didn't know how big you were and your budget. I'm the same size and standard size is perfect for me.

I mentioned grip and shaft size as my friend has blown over $300+ on junk starter sets where he had trouble holding onto the club b/c grips were way too small and shafts that were too short. He just hated the game and it wasn't until he upgraded these items to his specs that he started to enjoy it out there. However, he spent an extra $100+ doing so. If he just searched on the buy/sell or whatever for someone selling clubs to his specs, he would have saved quite a bit. Thats all i'm saying.

Find a club, hold it, take a light swing and you'll know pretty fast if its right for you. Its almost like trying on a shoe.

ewong
09-07-2008, 06:20 PM
hhmmm I'll definately try that when I'm buying my clubs. BTW I've borrowed a club from the golf course the other day and apparently I grip the club too hard, since there was a lot of rubbing on my glove after I was done.

How do i fix that? I'm afriad if I don't grip it hard enough it'll go flying out of my hand

very true about 15, thats a tough hole for sure. Playing from the tips is near impossible for the average golfer, especially for players who cant shape shots on command.

I see tons of heros (especially from the US) who come in for the first time and play the tips. i'd say 50% miss the fairway on the first tee.

are you kidding me? 15 is a test of patience and decision making. taking what you learned from the previous 14 holes and testing your skills here.
if you want to make par, you only have to hit it around 220 from the whites, use a smart club for your second (i usually go for 5 wood or 4 iron depending on my lie), and you can either use a mid iron to get it high and hard or lay back and two stroke it onto the green and place it nicely. it's an amazing hole. if you want to grip and rip every par 5, northlands isnt for you.

Happened to check out Golftown.ca yesterday and there was a big ad about the annual demo sale. Decided to check it out and bought myself a mint set of X20's. I swear they couldn't have even been used for one round as half of them seem as though they've never been hit.

They were also labelled incorrectly. They were sitting beside another set of 7 clubs 4-PW with a price tag of $425 for 8 clubs. (This set was also in much worse condition) The set I ended up buying had all 8 clubs 4-SW but the sticker was for a set of 7 for $375.

$420 after tax and they'll fit them for free.

Well I'm not the greatest golfer in the world I have a crappy set of clubs (Fairway if you have even heard of them lol) I go about a dozen times a year shoot high 90's on a very good day. So I'm looking for a new set of clubs. Right now I'm bidding on Taylor Made R7 Max CGB 2007 on ebay but I'm not holding my breath since I can't see it going for what my max is.

What do you guys think of those clubs anyways?

The ping s58s are blades i believe. These types of clubs are better for the more advanced golfer. Ping does make some other excellent clubs however. You might want to check out the i10's or g10's.

I have the older Ping i3+ which is comparable to the new i10 and I absolutely love them.

I always go (believe it or not) to www.theweathernetwork.com select vancouver bc and they have an "activities" tab......there you can click on golf report. It shows all the golf courses - select the one you are interested in and then there is a link to the website that shows the course info including fees. There are quite a few give or take $50

May be a long way around it but I have trouble remembering all the courses names...so this helps me. Just an idea.....

I'm gonna be selling a Taylormade R7 driver soon here. Stiff shaft 10.5 degree loft. As well as a Callaway X 3-wood, also with a stiffy.
My reason for selling the driver is because of the loft. Where I play it gets windy, so I'm buying an 8.5 with a different type of stiff shaft.

I've already played around 10 rounds this year :) I love it.

Make sure your swingspeed is fast enough for an 8.5 though. I've seen a number of people playing and 8.5 but couldn't get enough ballflight and ended up hitting it significantly shorter than a higher loft driver. :)

Best bang for the buck course IMO is Newlands in Langley. $40 with cart peak season weekends.

I'm going to play the executive course there today. Quick and cheap, 11 holes for $15 wkdy / $20 wknd also with a cart. Perfect for beginners and you can pull out the driver on a couple holes if you are one. If it's dead and you're sneaky you can go from the 10th back to the 2nd and play 20 :D Not that I would ever do that :p

Edit: Executive greens are in rough shape so far.

Played 20 holes, shot 17 over. 0 birdies :(

For me, it didn't matter so I just got a cheap set from sportmart to learn from. Now, I wanna get a new set that I will keep for a long time....I don't even have a nice driver yet lol. then again, I've only been playing since last year.

What would you guys recommend for a driver, the nike 5900 or TM burner? I tried both and they were fine but I just want an opinion as to where I can learn... also, what Loft do you guys use? i'm thinking of getting a 10.5 with a stiff..

if I recall correctly sport chek has some on for about $160. I was thinking about buying myself a cheap set since I'm just a beginner as well and don't think I should buy an expensive set until I get good, but I have no one to golf with anymore and can't really justify spending money on something I won't use :(

To those that are considering the "cheap sets".. I highly suggest puting together a set from Craiglist or even the RS buy/sell. For about the same price as a new complete starter set, you can get a used set of higher end clubs that you wont have to upgrade much once you get more into the game. When i first started out, i wasted hundreds of dollars buying crap golfing gear b/c i thought i was just starting out.

Older Callaway/TM drivers can be had for about $40, older TM, Callaway, Cleveland iron sets for about $100-$150 and older Odyssey putters i've seen for about $20-30. Though its older gear, i would play with that stuff b/c of the better shafts, clubheads, grips, etc. over anything from Sportsmart or Sportschek any day

Well I met this guy in richmond who has an ad on craigslist. He use to run a used sporting good store and has a lot of clubs left from his old business. He showed me some incomplete sets for bout $50 in pretty good condition. They're like 3-7 yrs old give or take, but they only have some minor wear.

I mean if I'm getting an used set. $50 isn't too much money to invest even if they're horrible clubs.

Though this guy has been golfing for 30 yrs and pretty much does the whole used sporting good sale as a hobby. So he seems pretty knowledgeable.

Lol I'm in the same boat as you on this one. I started out with a Top Flite complete set from golftown, everything from Driver to SW and I went in with the mentality of 'I'm a beginner, I don't need an expensive set'. What a mistake. Now I regret getting them because I've upgraded every single club in my bag. Taylormade Burner/R9 Driver, Ping Rapture Hybrids, Callaway X20's, Cleveland wedges. Wasted $350 on a cheap set. For me, not a single club (except for my R9) was bought brand new, I just took advantage of golftown's demo sale and craigslist.

oh btw I have a complete left handed set available if anyone wants it. Set was only been used about 3 months, and some of the irons have never hit a ball yet! :D

I'd stick with a 10.5 as most of our swing speeds can't accommodate much lower. Plus it helps to get more backspin and carry on a regular basis.

I haven't tried the new burner but the 08 was OK. I haven't hit a Nike wood since their Ignite series. When I was in the market for a driver I compared the TM to the Cobra Speed series (Cobra's last year model) and I absolutely love the Cobra. Hitting both on the course with the same swing I noted the Cobra being more forgiving and longer. The only thing I can't stand is the sound, but I hear they muffled that with their new stuff.

It doesn't answer your question, but just another suggestion if you haven't tried them.

Haha, gripper and ripper.

Personally, it may sound weird but I always go with my gut instinct. If im on a hole and a another player hits a 6 iron and it goes way long, I will not change my club to adjust. I dont know what it is but it gets right into my head, and thats where I begin to make mistakes. I started doing this year, easing up on clubs rather than trying to smash it, and my cap has dropped significantly. Golf is much a mind sport. If you get pissed off, your not going to play better. Stay relaxed.

^ haha, ok, i tried a few drivers today at Golftown where u can take it to the range with tape and rip a few balls. I then check the tape and can see that I've hit it in the middle of the club but the ball is still slicing to the right...what am I doing wrong? Maybe I need to take some lessons lol

ah classic beginner problem. don't sweat it too much- 99% of people slice the ball when they start out (even now I have the odd banana). Unfortunately it can be cause by a number of things- but if I were to guess, it would be that you're leading your downswing with your arms and swinging "outside-in". If you don't really understand that part, grab a friend with a camera and try to get a back and front view of your swing. Even better would be a couple of lessons from your local pro.

Golf is the toughest game that I've picked up- but it's definitely the most fun and most rewarding in the end.

Nice course though... Just make sure you bring more balls then you normally would lol. The only part of the course I don't like are the holes that run right along side of the freeway. I'm a lefty and if I happen to have a slice, someone's windshield is getting a nike ball through it lol.

but in the end, the bag won't improve your game. its the last thing i look at buying when i'm golf shopping.

Riverside sales it for 119.00 - Just ask any of the younger guys - They will beat Golf Town and discount on top of it.

Has anyone here driven up to play at Predator Ridge? I'm going back to Vancouver this summer and two of my golf buddies were thinking of driving up to do it.

I've played Predator. The Okanagan Valley is the place to go to play golf. Bring lots of money :D

I haven't been back to Vancouver in nearly a year, has the slowing economy driven down green fees?

Last year we played tobiano and the bear on our golf trip. Tobiano was awesome, we might try it again this year. Last year it was really windy when we played it.

We were thinking of going to the Kelowna/Kamloops area again this year. Anyone have any recommendations on a nice course that we should try. We go up on Friday and come back on Sunday. We play golf on Saturday and Sunday.

In the Kamloops area, Talking Rock, Sun Rivers, The Dunes, and Tobiano make a great golf trip. A lot of people that go to Kamloops play those 4 courses because they are all fairly unique and they're all pretty different from eachother.

In Kelowna, Black Mountain (brand new) has been getting good reviews, Kelowna Springs, Tower Ranch, and Gallagher's Canyon are all popular as well. And of Course the Bear and the Quail.

Wow that sounds like quite an exciting trip! And Kamloops is somewhat closer than Predator Ridge right (its closer to Vernon I'm thinking?)

Any of you guys ever buy a club from ebay or anything online? from ebay, just wondering if you will have to worry about duty, custom/tax or whatever...

06-18-2009, 09:55 AM
the customs/duties/taxes is hit and miss sometimes. but be prepared to pay for it. sometimes, it can be half the cost of your item. also, be careful of fakes and cause there's lots out there on ebay.

That sucks dude. You should call the clubhouse. I left my 9 iron at Guildford and got it back a week later.

I'd check CL if not.

i would go to riverside and see the price. then go to golftown and get them to price match but also knock off 5% too.

price? i dunno. it was a package deal(3 rounds of golf, power carts included) with 2 nights at the Hampton Inn,$475.

Anyone play Kings Links? I want to check that course out..

Played the course 2 weeks ago for the first time. Its a link style course. Wasn't impressed with the course layout, course conditions, and green fees. I suggest you consider another course as Kings Links charges an arm and a leg, not worth the price.

Not that it impacts the course layout, but they don't even have a proper club house..

Kings Links is awesome. one of the most challenging courses out there. classic links golf course, and its worth the $75 or whatever they charge. if you think you can golf well, go to Kings Links and be prepared for some humility. its a golfers golf course.

i played there 3 weeks ago and get out to play it every other month or so. the conditions were great and the greens were fast. remember, its a links course, so think British Open, that's what you get.

btw, we got to play the first round of the season there a few months back, check it out:

Anyone play Kings Links? I want to check that course out..

just played it today. fairway and greens were dry so the ball bounced and it fast as hell. its not an easy course to play with 2 feet grass growing on the side. hit it there and you think you can find it but you never will. paid $60 for 830am tee time so guess its not so bad.

played tsawassen right after for $30 and enjoyed that more. greens were softer, greener. par 65 so a little shorter but a lot easier.

Hey guys newbie here, my company does a golf tourney every year and ive wanted to get into golf for a while now, so when i heard about the little tourney i went out and got some cheap clubs at sportschek(99.99$ dunlops complete set, at there tent sale thing) Thought theyd be ok for starting out. Went to driving range twice with buddy, and on the second time the head of the driver went 100 yrds down the driving range. So i took them back. Just wondering if you guys could recommend a store to check out for a decent starter set thats not going to break the bank. thanks guys!

wow! i guess you really do get what you pay for. go to riverside and look for stuff on clearance. i never pay full price for any of my golf gear. i just wait for them to go on sale or if they have freebies that come along with the purchase.

if you find something for like $100 at riverside, go to golftown and get them to price match plus 5% off the golftown price. thats their price matching policy =)

Craigslist

Craigslist always has some good deals but if you're unsure whether or not its a good deal, post it here and we'll let you know.

As for your current set, you can always try to take it back and see if the manager will let you upgrade the set or something. There is no Dunlop customer service so dont even bother trying.
