You bought 2 odssey putters? Baller! Have you hit with the callaways? how do you like them? Nowadays I only use Noodles.
I recently picked up a Ben Hogan 3 hybrid. Methinks Benny is going to be gone now that Callaway owns them. Golftown had this nice Ben Hogan with the adila green shaft for 79 bucks. waht a deal.
I cant wait for the season! Btw, I suck and am going to try hard to break 90 this year

Ya man I am pumped for the season. I was at Golf Town in January and bought two boxes of the Nike SFT2 Long and Soft baby :D . I was going to buy a new Nike bag but they seem so overpriced. eBay seems like a good route for golf bags actually if you've ever checked. I don't have a carry bag I have one of those big assed bags meant for using with a pull cart thing (which I will not use). I just carry the big frickin bag around the course lol - it was a gift.. But yea time for a new bag. Also looking at gettinga Taylor Made 3 and 5 wood to complete my wood set.
I am pretty pumped about this year. Last year I didnt play nearly enough (1 or 2 rounds/ month).

the R5 fairway woods are a special buy at golftown.ca right now. and if you're looking for a new bag, check this one (http://www.golftown.com/gtcommerce/stores/1/TaylorMade-Ltd-Edition-Major-Stand-Bag---Georgia-State-Season-Opener-P5297C771.aspx) out. i will probably splurge and buy a tour bag within the next few weeks.
anyone used the cleveland hibore? it seems i cant take a BAD shot with that club... only $198 right now... total steal considering my departed callaway from last season needed tons of concentration and a prayer before every shot. where do you play mostly?
My season is already done with another wrist injury. Was testing out my new Orlimar driver for the season, bombed a few nice drives and felt instant pain. Its for sale in the buy/sell btw. Hope you guys have a better season.

Hey there. I'm actually not in the market for a nice tour bag. Looking for a light weight but functional carry bag. I will check out the R5 next time im at Golf Town. Thanks for the suggestion! :D
I am from Abbotsford. I play most of my golf at Ledgeview.

when i was at golf town buying my SQ i asked the guy about the hibore since it was a driver one of my buddies was looking at, the guy working there said its nearly impossible to hit a bad shot with, very very forgiving and rarely will u take it outside the fairway
2 weeks from now me and my buddies made reservations for our first round of the year at Northview, we went there last saturday and it was AMAZING, i really wish we could have played that day, we only hit up the range though :(

redline - the link i sent was for a stand-bag. its $149 and looks similar to last years tour bags. its a damn good price for a damn good bag. not everyone wants a $350 leather bag, but everyone wants the quality.
i've never played ledgewood... i have a thing for #2 a redwoods, so when i'm in langley thats where i play.
hondaracer - i demoed it at golftown and it seems great, i was consistent as far as distance and control but when i go onto review sites and read reviews there were a lot that said negative things. its only $198 right now so its not much of a risk. im torn between the orilimar that rb has for sale and the hibore. hmmm.
the weather is getting better and better. but the next couple weeks i think are going to be crap starting tomorrow. I wanted to get a buncha new stuff this year but i learnt over the years to not tinker too much.
i just got some ping i5s last year and i might get a new putter this year but other than that im keeping everything the same.
do we have enough people for a couple tee times somewhere sometime soon ?

Its Ledgeview not Ledgewood lol :D its a really nice course on the mountain. The greens are very deceiving! Lots of hills, 2 holes where you have to shoot uphill over a gully (175ish par 3 with the green right at the edge of the gully, and the other one a little shorter). Also 2 more holes where water is a factor. It's a par 72, you guys should check it out one time if you're ever out here.
Yeah you're right that is a stand bag haha and it is a good price but I don't really like white. I am gonna bid on this Nike one I have been watching on eBay.
Thanks tho.
Yea we should have a RS Golf tourney!!

its ok man depending on what course a 102 at northview is a solid 92 anywhere else. I remember playing w/ some friends at the ridge i think it was (the one they used to play the tour event at) and it was super ass hard. im starting lessons there at northview this week, im pretty stoked about it but i would like to go play there more often but i live pretty far....by fraserview.

Man I was just looking on eBay lol
I will show you the links for the R7's.. they are only like $250 $300.
http://cgi.ebay.ca/Brand-New-Taylor-Made-r7-irons-Draw-set-HEADS-ONLY_W0QQitemZ110120081336QQihZ001QQcategoryZ83025 QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
This particular seller has 2 auctions with the same R7's plus I think he has a store.
My only worry is that maybe they are replica ones? I dunno. He has over 161 feedback with 100% positive.
Anyway,
GP grips you can get a set for $30 on there.
And the TT stiff shafts I found for around $50.
I honestly know absolutely nothing about club making or buying certain parts to put together a set, but I thought these deals seemed really good considering a set of R7's retail at Golf Town for about $1,000.
I am sure I would have to take them to a shop to get them done but the labor I would guess would be $100 or less.
Just thinking about it after everything I came up with a ballpark figure. I would say it would cost you about $500 or so..
Maybe i'm missing something tho. It is a bit of a hassle but you're getting them for half price so. I dunno!
the_rickster
05-01-2007, 10:43 AM
i think it would be more than $100 labour.
just my $0.02 though
if your putting in graphite/steel shafts i think its 10-15 per clubhead at golftown ?
so your looking at 80-120'sh, i think the grip they throw on for you if your doing reshafting.
its a good way to do if your can find decent heads/shafts for a good price, i put together a set for my gf from golfsmith for about $120, 6 irons, 2 hybrids incl parts and labour (me and my friend put everything together ourselves)
the tricky thing is finding DECENT iron shafts, because irons are used to take divots you have to find a good or strong enough one to take abuse, if you buy a cheap one the flexes might be off or inferior quality and it will show up when building a club.
never cheap out on a shaft, because the shaft makes the club, it can turn a shitty head into a great club. if you go cheap you'll feel and see it right away on your shots.

^ ahha nice. My dad has one.
Yeah my first set of clubs I had graphite shafts. They were extremely whippy. After I switched to a stiffer steel shaft I gained at least 10 yards or more on every iron. I wonder how well I would hit the ball with the best clubs money can buy ahha.

whats strange is that halfway through the first swing, your hat spun from backwards to forwards.
seriously though? if you're hitting shots to the left or right without slicing them, it might be as simple as adjusting your grip.

Hey nice swing redline. I can see you have nice wrist cock during downswing, and nice arm extention during followthrough.
If you doubt about your spine angle, try bending more on waist and keep back straight. And looks like your ball position is too far forward for an iron shot, maybe becoz of that you push the ball to the right.
My season starting soon as well, after the canucks lost. Just bought a new Cobra Mspeed fairway wood I absolutely love it.
I suck at driving, im more like a short irons/fairway wood player

can you guys post the price of any driving range you know? I goto Richmond Driving Range (Mikasa) alot but they just jacked up the price from $3 to $5 per 50balls. I'm going to switch to other places.
hey redliine, your posture ccould be more upright and not so much hunched probably want your back to be pretty straight.
your hitting it right because your face is open, but also the path of your clubhead is coming from the outside to the inside. when that happens its super hard to straighten it out without doing something weird.
in the first pic your weight looks like its more on your left should be about 60/40 on your right but maybe its just the angle.
fraserview has $4.00-1 token-50 balls
$10-3 tokens-150
$30-10 toks-500

hmm if i'm swinging outside to inside, how can my clubface be open? I'm trying to make my swing more upright because I used to have a really flat swing years ago and that caused a lot of inconsistancy.
At address, my body is bent at the hips, my back is not hunched. But I guess as I start my downswing I hunch my back a bit to make sure it scuff the perfect amount of turf under the ball. I am 6'1. Sometimes I think I need longer shafts but who knows. Is there like a general rule for club length size for your specific height? I never thought about that till now. I wonder if there is some table on the net that shows what you should be shooting for your specific height. haha well im gonna do some searching around!

You must be a better driver/wood player then. Yes iron shots need much steeper swing plane but it is very easy to go outside-in (i dont see it from the pics tho). You might not have club face open but an outside-in swing cuts across the ball and creates left-to-right sidespin to send the ball to the right. Check your grip as well, it's very common cause of open club face at impact.
To make a steeper shot you should spead the weight evenly between both legs at address, ball in the middle. Turn your hip to initialize downswing (never with arms) and let arms come down to the inside. IF you are hitting the ground usually is because you using too much arm strenght and try to "cast" the club down then hit the ground.
I'm 6' and I was choosing between a longer club set and a normal one. I ended up geting a normal one and I have no problem hitting with short irons at all. HOwever they are my strongest irons. I suck at driver coz my swing is always too steep.

05-08-2007, 05:06 AM
Cool thanks for the help :D
I agree w/ yang. Sometimes though just turning hips doesnt create an inside path i'll have to force it a bit w/ my shoulders but creates good result
next time you play out on the course check your divot and see if its poiting left of your intended target. if its left then your comin over the top.
coming into the ball from a different angle helps a ton in trying to straighten out the ball flight.
there is a general rule for club lenghts, i have this fitting book my friend has when i get it i'll list the measurements on which length is for which height.
generally when fitting a club, the length from wrist to floor is measured and then determines general lenght of club. because it doesn't matter how tall you are, if you have ape arms you might just need a regular club b/c your arms/hands are swining the club.

It would be easier to tell if there was a shot of your finish... not too sure but it looks like you would possibly end up in the "reverse c" finish. but i cant tell to well from the last shot. Anyways Your back is straight at the beginning of you backswing but you are hunched comming down and when you are making contact with the ball. Place the ball more in the center of your stance, that could help as it looks as though you are "pushing" the ball, meaning your hands should have cocked back to square at contact, whereas yours havent made it to that point causing your club face to be slightly open. Best way to expalin it... think baseball. A batter wants to hit the ball straight to center field, he will make contact with the ball with his hands coming back to square causing the ball to go to center field. if the batter wants to hit it to right field, he will make contact with the ball with his hands ahead of the bat, directing the ball to right field. if the batter wants to go to left field he will put the bat ahead of his body and hands directing it to left field. Same stuff sorta applies to golf in that perspective. Center the ball in your stance, keep your back straight, Slow down your swing to the point where you'll yawn its so slow... even if you do a full swing and it goes 50 yards but straight thats better than 150 and out of bounds. this way you can see and feel things happen better. Also keep your eye on the ball. Best way to do this is to stare at the ball and after contact is made and your are going through with your follow through let your right shoulder catch your chin and then look up... this way your eyes will be focused on the your ball until contact and a bit after. If you slow your swing down it will be easy to do this because you are able to focus alot more on what is happening. Once you feel more comfortable speed it up bit by bit using those same techniques and eventually the basics will be second nature. You should be directing where the ball is going not just swing and pray for a good shot. A good golfer will direct the ball where they want it to. You can try the "baseball" thing i described at the range to prove a point. If you want to hit a straight shot make sure everything is square at contact, if you want to play a slice or fade make contact with your grip/hands ahead of the club, hook or draw contact the ball with your hands/grip behind the ball. Try it and let me know if it works. It did for me.

Hey thanks for the reply. This is the only shot I had for my follow thru. This is more of a finish tho haha.. probably useless.
I know I have to have my club and everything back to address position when I make contact with the ball. I will focus more on it tho. Also I will try to slow my club head speed down and focus on hitting the ball square and then gradually increase my speed. I'm going golfing saturday morning tho w.out my 8 iron!! fackkkk I gotta get that head back on lol maybe I can get it done somewhere tomorrow.
Thanks for your help and suggestions.

No problem.
From the angle of the above shot^^^
It looks like you are arched a bit. if that is the case face a mirror and do a swing as you normally would and when you are at the end of your follow through/finishing stance look at yourself to see your positioning of everything. From your head to your left foot should be completely flat up and down. your left foot should be squared off. For example, and old test would be to lay a club downpointing in the direction you want the ball to go and line your feet up parallel to each other with the toes against the club and your feet approx. shoulder width apart. set up to the ball and swing, your left foot should stay where it is(may feel awkward and restrictive at first) and your finish should be flat from head to foot like explained above. Your body weight should feel as though it is 90% on your left leg. Whole point is to swing through the ball power should transfer from right through to left.
^^ saturn sounds like a pro, we might all need a lesson from him.
hey redliine, i can't write up the chart b/c there are so many variables to put down, like height wrist to floor measurement and lie angle of clubhead. just goto http://pinggolf.com/global_webfit.html and at the top it'll say DRIVER, IRONS, WEGES, PUTTER and just click on IRONS and follow the steps. when your measuring make sure your standing straight up looking forward and not kinda hunched.
its just a general guideline so don't take it to heart, the best thing to do is just goto someone who can fit it properly, at a driving range is best so you can see ball flight and impact pattern on the head.
thats if your super serious, if your just out to whack it around i wouldn't even bother unless your buying a nice new set.

Jazz was my beginner club set, they are great clubs to learn golf.
I suggest Nickent DC ironwood. Riverside have them on sale for 60$ and they are sooo easy to hit.

I'm not very good to be honest. I've been doing some reading and I've been applying the theoritical applications to my swing. I think I've got the pitching wedge down to maximize distance but I've got to learn my power control and chipping. My putting is ok. I still have to learn how to overcome slants/uphills/downhills but otherwise, my putting's okay. :)
I'm going to stick with pitch'n'putt first and until I get it down pretty well, I'll then hit up the full golf course. :p

i hit up Musqueam golf course today and it was fantastic. I'm not talking about the course itself cause i wouldn't really know, but i'm just saying it was a great day out on the course (for my second time ever, and first time since i really started getting into it). I think i did ok, shot an 84 at the par 60. All in all, it was a great day. ;)
Hey guys, I need some input on whether or not I should invest in a new set.
I've been at it for about a year now (well technically half a year since I didn't practice/play at all during the Winter) and last year my father bought me a complete set of clubs as a present.
Here's a link to the set that I'm currently using: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130125599251&ih=003&category=115280
Now, I'm quite aware of the fact that this set is pretty shitty, but as I still consider myself somewhat of a beginner, it's decent enough as I've learned to swing properly (or so I like to think) and am able to hit the ball straight fairly consistently.
I've found that although I can hit my own clubs OK, when I try out other clubs, I find that I am able to hit them even better than I can with my own clubs. One problem that I seem to notice with my own set of clubs is that when I am about to make contact with the ball, the head seems to feel really heavy all of a sudden, which I'm guessing is due to the fact that this set isn't exactly top quality stuff. As I feel that my set right now is sort of "holding me back", I've been wanting to invest in a new set of irons.
Anyways, my sister's boyfriend just so happens to be selling one of his sets that he purchased, but has practically never used them asides from the range a couple times. For $700, he will be including the TaylorMade rac LT irons with Royal Precision Rifle 6.0 steel shafts, as well as a new Callaway ERC Fusion Driver (06 model).
I'm not too sure if I should go for buying that new set (even though it's a steal) as I'm currently using graphite shafts, but I guess since I'm still young, and a guy, I shouldn't really need to use graphite shafts anyway as I only see women and seniors with them. Also, I won't have much use for the driver yet as my only experiences playing so far have been on pitch-and-putt courses since I can only hit my short irons well, but am beginning to see improvement in my long irons.
So to sum it all up, would it be a wise or bad choice to transition from a graphite shaft beginners set to steel shaft TaylorMade's? Or should I buy something a bit cheaper and more suited towards my current skill level?
the_rickster
06-18-2007, 05:27 PM
rule #1: dont golf clubs just because they're a good deal.
go to golftown, and try every single iron designed for the beginner/intermediate (mid-high handicap) player. finding the right clubs for your game is a long process, and buying something just because could seriously affect your development.
as for the shaft to use on your irons, steel gives better feedback (vibration from miss-hit), but weighs more... typically, swinging a graphite shaft will get you 2-3 mph increase in swing speed which translates into upwards of 5 yards more distance... if distance is what you're looking for. since the steel shaft is heavier, it gives more of a feeling of control which will allow you to analyze your swing and contact. most people are using graphite for their drivers and fairway clubs and generally only low handicappers are using steel. DO YOUR RESEARCH and you'll end up being an addict to the game.
edit: btw... i shot an 82 at northlands this morning (with the SLOWEST pair EVER! 2:10 thru the first 9). 5 over on the front 9.

whats wrong with sportchek's golf club sets? They seem like decent clubs at good prices but i've heard from a lot of people that sportcheks clubs suck. Why's that? I was thinking of getting a wilson or dunlop set
the_rickster
06-20-2007, 06:49 AM
they're cheaply made, little to no ingenuity goes into them and whens the last time you saw someone on the tour using wilson or dunlop? you don't have to play exactly what the pros play, but its a good indication of what works.

Paddy Harrington hits Wilsons! The Di7's are pretty decent clubs.
Anyway just a heads up for you golf junkies, there is a sample sale going on for the Canadian Distributers of Ogio and Cleveland (I think Cleveland just recently got a new distributer but anyway they should have some clubs there hopefully wedges..) and some clothing. Was looking to score a bag but dont have time to go until tm.
The sale is going on Today 12-6 and tm 12-5 at Rampion Enterprises. 6600 Fraserwood Place, Richmond BC.

Also gonna goto Hazelmere on wednesday, did anyone play it before they had the canadian tour even there ? Just wondering if it play 10x harder than it did before. I kinda hope they kept the same conditions I wouldn't mind trying to play a close to canadian tour calibre course.

anyone buy from this site before? legit/authentics?
They have some killer deals, no shipping if u ship to the states. Even after travel, duties etc...you still save a good 25% compared to buying them locally.
Gonna upgrade my wedges, anyone run a 54/58 degree setup? I currently run 56/60 cleveland tour action wedges, they work great, but debating if i should switch it up or stay the same degrees on my new set.
Anyone switch setups and like/dislike the change? I dont plan to buy 3 wedges.
56 degree = 100+yards
60 degree =75+ yards
PW = 125-135 yards.
based on a full swing.

if you like the control and bounce you're getting from your current wedges, stick with them. the worst mistake i've ever seen someone make in switching gear is messing with their wedges.
i have cobra S9 48* & 52* then vokey spin milled 56*, 60* in my bag and rely on all of them heavily. with those wedges, i'm putting within 5-7 feet after almost every approach.
if you're planning on switching brands, you HAVE to try the rac TP from taylormade, its sweeeeet.
Gu3s5
06-30-2007, 12:25 PM
^ wow u carry 4 wedges eh? how do u like the vokeys? i have CG10s and theyre gettin a bit old. although i love my wedges and depend on them heavily like most ppl do i want a change. im deciding on the vokeys or the callaway x-tours.
the_rickster
06-30-2007, 01:32 PM
vokeys are world class. if you buy them, they'll be the last ones you ever buy... get them regripped every year and it's the best investment in a club you'll ever make.
both the vokey and the x tour are good choices. since you're in the price range and if you're not a sandman, consider the tp wedge from taylormade. its killer.
bigbadpoppa
06-30-2007, 04:44 PM
thx for the input. I'm gonna grab the vokeys "Spin milled". those things look nuts! not only do they have grooves like your usual clubs, the face of the club is all grooved also!

I've been through a bunch of wedges myself and I must say the best ones I've used thus far are theTaylormade Black RAC TP wedges.
I'm currently using the Callaway X Tours and I find that it eats up the face of the golf balls really badly. Always takes a nice chunk out the balls. Gets expensive after a while.
the_rickster
07-03-2007, 12:34 PM
i'd play the TPs if i didnt already have the vokeys.
and yeah, i heard from an actual callaway rep that the wedges tear up the golf balls. interestingly enough, some people in the industry say that it was designed that way on purpose (roger cleveland of cleveland golf designed the wedge with input from "the stupid idiot")

I should invest in a couple wedges.. hmm.. I rely on my PW from everything 115 yards and under.
a wedge totally helps alot when you are under 100yds. so much easier than trying to baby a pw in there.
i have a 54 and 58 deg titlest vokey oil can.
super awesome so far, they are about 3 years old. they spin pretty good for the amount i use them, but not as good as when i got them.
i've tried tp wedges and honestly dont like head shape and the way it sits down, but its all personal with the wedges. most of the main companies make awesome wedges anyways, you cant really go wrong just gotta pick one that you like the best.

a beginner doesn't require reliable or decent clubs. they require something that can provide immediate results and provide response and feel that is needed by a beginner, not shot making clubs with a sweet spot the size of a dime. high end clubs are designed for advanced players. entry level clubs are designed for people interested in playing/learning the game.
a set of adams idea or wilson staff Di6 irons are in that price range and are designed for players who are learning. if you're out looking for the best fucking deal of the century and end up with a set of cleveland cg1s for $300, you're gonna have a nice set of clubs, but despise the game before you get to the bottom of your bucket of range balls.
bigbadpoppa
07-18-2007, 11:48 AM
I agree with some of the above points, but some of the high end clubs are just as forgiving as beginner clubs, if not better.
Eg. Callaway x-series or big bertha's. BIG sweet spots, very very forgiving clubs. You'll get more forgiveness off a set of used x-16's then a cheap set of wilsons (i've had both set of clubs and can really feel the difference when i was a beginner in the softer feel with the callways which are known to make forgiving clubs)
..but something high end like some Titleists, well as stated above, the sweet spot is the size of dime, not recommended for beginners at all.
$300 in my opinion is too much to drop on a set of clubs if your a beginner. Once you start getting better, your gonna huck those $300 clubs and upgrade pretty fast. I'd recommend buying a used wilson set for like $100.
So with all these city strikes going on everywhere where are you guys playing now? I know McCleery Fraserview are close. Bby mountain and Riveryway could follow if the workers decide the strike. Congrats!
I have never gotten an Ace before. The courses I usually play have only 4 chances per round. 5 chances depending on wind for one of the par 4's I am thinking about (300 yards, drivable if the wind isn't totally in your face)

i guess you got rained on pretty good there,eh Rickster? right now i'm off to Glen Eagles, warming up for tomorrow. Squamish has a $35 deal, 8 a.m. shotgun start.

i ended up canceling that morning (no one was there) and drove to glen eagles, as well. played the round alone, so i figured i'd play three balls. it was fun.
i also played friday at northlands and got rained on HARD. didn't really start coming down til the 5th... but didn't let up until the 13th or so.
i finally eagle'd the 17th. my tee shot was average, and left me with about 185-190 yards for my second, i just wanted to get it close, so i used my 5 iron and it got me to within 3 feet of the pin for an easy tap in.

i don't think i've played any other course in Vancouver other than Langara, and i thought it was meh anyways. i'd play Guilford or Surrey any day over that.
langara is the crappiest one out of the three which is why its meh.
even though fraserview is pricey it is definately the best out of the three (imo).
mccleery isn't bad either, but the thing you wont find at these courses is some early bird deals that other places in surrey and other places have
ie: play after a certain time for $xx or before a certain time.
anyways playing fraserview and langara is like night and day, you can even compare langara sucks =P

does anyone work @ a golf store here? If so, quick question:
Will the 2008 (or even the 2007) prices on clubs/drivers go down in price eventually considering our dollar is above Par.
I'm debating whether or not to buy online from the states or buy locally (Currently it's still much cheaper to buy online from the states than to buy online off a canadian website). I'm looking to upgrade to a sumo2 driver or TM 460 driver this winter.

talked to a riverside golf guy, supposily manufacturers will slowly adjust the prices, but for any recent changes, the only thing he has heard of is CALLAWAY lowering their prices 15-20% very very soon (in 10 days) .

11-01-2007, 08:28 AM
i didn't think it had anything to do with the manufacturers. for example, the manager at the magazine store i go to says he charges more for magazines(as opposed to the US price) is because he paid more for the magazine(because of the lower value of the Canuck buck),ergo he charges more. i called bullshit and said to him that was the way it was,not the way it is now.i think the wholesalers and retailers here in Canada think people here are too stupid to figure out that they are pulling one over on the consumers.

off to Hazelmere! forgot about the clocks. ok,off to Timmy's first.
i think the states has always had the best golf deals regardless of exchange rate, but with the new rate now its even better.
i've always bought my stuff online then have it sent to point roberts to pick it up.
i dont think i've ever bought clubs from a canadian retail store in years. even when i used to work at a golf store years years ago, it was still a better deal to buy it online sometimes.
just dont claim it on your way back =)

stupid? lol. dude, it's a cool toy. it's not going to help my swing but it will help a lot with proper club selection,it'll give me the distance to all the bunkers, hazards. and it'll show me where the green is when you can't see it.more importantly,i'd rather know where the green starts and ends, yardage wise, than to know where the actual pin is. all i have to do is glance down at my golf cart.

club selection and navigating your way around bunkers and hazards are part of the challenge of the game. did you use a 9-iron from 140 yards out and hit a bunker? oh well... remember that for next time.
you know the best 'toy' for measuring club selection? a bucket of balls at the range!

easier said. i've played over 22 different courses this year, each for the first time. i can't even remember what i had for lunch yesterday.
and speaking of the range, the manager at my driving range just gave me permission to come in before it opens and walk off yardages with my GPS so i can measure accurately all my irons because the targets there are so far apart you don't actually know what you're hitting, distance wise. so if you see a guy with a can of orange spray paint making dots out there,go for it. :D

gps/lazers, waste of time. Your killing 1/2 the game by using this. 1/2 the challenge is to estimate the right distance. If you remove this factor, your losing a good majority of the fun of the game, i consider it just cheating, doesnt' take a genious to wave around a GPS machine, but it does take skill to judge distances and choose the proper club.
If your not looking for a challenge, and just focusing on your "consistency and accuracy" then that's fine, but if you want to absorb the whole game, the other half comes with "judging distances and proper club selection"

Played about a year ago. Word to the wise, may sure your cart has lots of gas. Ours ran out, thanks to having my cell called the club house and they brought another one....with little gas. That one ran out as well. Finally got to finish our round with a third cart :flamemad:

gas powered carts? thats bush league.
^ its expensive to just convert to electric if you've already have gas. probably better just to keep the gas ones, its about $5000 for a new gas cart and i think electric's are more + you gotta convert your cart shed to charge it.
weather's been kind of funny these days with rain and some frosty mornings. are there any sales goin on anywhere? i think golftown had some demo sale last fall, do they do that more than once a year?
the_rickster
03-05-2008, 07:07 PM
1. i'm sure it's not $5000/ea if you're buying 20 or 30 of them.
2. they can always sell the gas ones to offset the price, and im sure the maintenance cost on electric is less costly.
3. its probably expensive to equip carts with gps, but courses do it all the time.
^ hey don't you play hockey w/ ray and those guys on wednesdays?
anyways..... you can also lease them too. but for some courses the head pro has to pay the expense out of his own pocket so if you got gas, and they are working properly then theres no real advantage in changin to electric unless you carts are breaking down.
some courses put their revenue back into stuff like electric carts, some courses have both gas and electric and slowly weed out gas ones. the golf course i work at, the carts here come straight out of the head pro's pocket so if the carts aren't broke he doesn't fix them haha.
btw i HATE frost.

They ARE around $5000 each if you were to buy them seperately. However, I dont think too many courses still buy them, as most courses lease carts for 5 or 10 year terms. This way they can return the old ones to get brand new ones. (unless it is up to the head pro to get them out of his own pocket, like bkw said). For instance, at Northlands, 5-10 carts are re-leased each season, allowing for the old carts to be cycled out and new carts brought in every year.
At present, there are 55 carts at Northlands and there are 10 more on the way... On average, there are usually 3 or 4 carts down in maintanence getting worked on, but those broken down carts are ususally the result of customers crashing into things and wrecking the alignment or brakes, and nothing to do with the cart being electric. so in that sense, you are right, electric carts are less costly to deal with then gas.
The only problem I have with Electric carts is that as the batteries get older, the charges do not last as long. As a result, when the same cart is going out for the second or third time in a day (you bastard 2nd twilighters who are too lazy to walk and take carts!), the likelihood of it dying on you is pretty good if you got an older cart. Each cart has 8 batteries, each costing 40-50 dollars a piece. This makes it difficult to justify spending the money on new batteries when the carts are only leased.
As for GPS at Northlands, it is on the way.. its just a matter of fitting it into the budget. I heard that each GPS unit costs several hundred dollars and that you have to close the course in order to have the GPS company come out and plot the course. I personally think the GPS will be a nice feature to have on the carts, especially since northlands is a difficult course with many blind shots. Unfortunately I know many customers will have an issue paying more money for the cart rental (5$ or so) when they do not intend to use it.
hopefully what i have said makes sense...
any more cart questions, just ask :)

northlands is my favorite course... i hope that the addition of gps wont jack up the green fees... i think that course has enough going for it that gps would take away from the experience of playing a course like that. i find that relying on a computer to make your club selection takes away from the game, and northlands is a course where club selection is the difference between a great day and an ok day.

i just bought a new set of graphite Tommy Armour Silver Scot's @ Golftown, on impulse. you know, they have those manager's specials on the fold up tables.
they were cheap($200), and i've been wanting to try graphite. anywho, just tried them at the range and what a difference. the club speed increase is awesome, especially for me because i don't really have a full swing, more like 7/8 max. i would say i easily picked up a club and a half with these babies. i'll give them a go at a golf course tomorrow for further testing.
http://www.golftown.com/gtcommerce/stores/1/images/products/all/Tommy%20Armour%20Silver%20Scot%20OS%20Irons.jpg
yea i've always wanted graphite, but kinda expensive to reshaft my clubs and to buy a new set right now doesn't make senes my clubs are kinda newish.
i have a smooth slower tempo so graphite would be awesome, but i just reshafted w/ rifle project x flighted 5.0's in my irons and so far they are pretty nice.
cheap set for graphite though holy cow the graphite probably cost 200 bucks.

i'm not sure if its going to frost over, the temp. looks alright for tonight, but then again i'm an optimist so i'm gonna stick with it. kyle told me that there are no bookings after 7:34 so i'll be the last group out for a bit. should be nice if everything works out.
Takaya: just got back, there was a dude there with a swing tracking system that is pretty neat... it uses sensors at each stall then sensors out in the range with sticks in the ground and tracks your actual yardage on a screen beside your stall. it's super easy to use and also pretty neat -- hes letting patrons use it for free right now, so i'd suggest for people to go try it out!
someone should come!!!!!
that sounds pretty awesome man i totally want to try that. will he start charging in the future? or is it just a trial thing for now? i dont know if i can make my way up there in the near future.
did you end up playing? i think it was pretty cold this morning. not alot of cloud cover too..so that doesn't help.

well he told me a bit. his plan right now is to run it for free to get feedback and to really dial in the system, takaya isn't making any money from it and neither is he, but it gives him a chance to really make it work for him before he markets it.
we actually went pretty in depth with the direction of the company and his plans to market the system, so i hope it works well for him.
the thing about it is that its so easy to use. no worries about pressing a ton of buttons or having to search around, it keeps track of all your shots and at the end of your session you can print out a stats page.
i didn't end up playing, i couldn't get anyone to commit to the time and when i called in this morning the dude told me i'd be going alone... which sucks on a course like that.
that being said, im going through major golf withdrawals right now, so if anyone wants to make any plans to go, pm me. i'll probably do northlands next week, same time maybe different day.
the week after next, im going to be on the island, can anyone suggest any decent courses over there? i'll be in victoria, nanaimo, courtenay, campbell river and port alberni.

i'm trying to choose between Cordova Bay GC & Olympic View GC in Victoria... has anyone here played them? tell me your thoughts.
i played cordova bay once long long time ago, from what i rememebr its pretty decent. some of it is in trees kinda like hazelmere, and some of its wide open with water like mayfair lakes. i've only played two island courses that one and royal colwood (i think thats what its called) colwood had good greens, small w/ some deceiving breaks, kind of like pitt meadows for those of you who've played there.

how'd it go? any tips on that course would be appreciated. (i carry a pda with hole hole descriptions for the courses i play/will play.)
went good, missed the rain, conditions were excellant. fairways and greens were really dry considering the amount of the rain we've had the last little bit.
its fairly wide open, nothing tricky about the course if you have the pda layout you should be fine.
there are some small corners you can cut going over bunkers and what not but nothing major. greens are medium sized some deceiving breaks (but i can't read greens to save my life). on some holes just make sure your on the right side of the green, some chips on specific sides of the greens are much much easier. mostly better to be short right or left chipping up hill on alot of them.
make sure you take enough club, ball isnt flying full distance yet, maybe 5 yds shorter or so.
btw, anyone want to play next week? after my first round of the year im started to fiend for golf..

Lloyd was teeing off from the back tees. On his down-swing, he suddenly realized that his wife, Jean, was about to tee off from the red tees, directly in his path. Unable to stop his down swing he nailed the ball, hit Jean directly in the right temple, killing her instantly.
A few days later Lloyd received a call from the coroner concerning her autopsy . "Lloyd, your wife seems to have died from blunt force trauma to the head. You said you hit a golf ball and struck her in the temple. Is that correct?"
"Yes sir," Lloyd replied, "that's correct."
"Well, Lloyd, I also found a large bruise on Jean's right hip. Do you know anything about that?"
"Yes sir," Lloyd said, "That would have been my mulligan."
^ hahaha, omg thats hilarious. at the same time, i can picture myself taking golf that seriously too hahaha. good one.
why did the golfer change his pants?

i just bought a new set of graphite Tommy Armour Silver Scot's @ Golftown, on impulse. you know, they have those manager's specials on the fold up tables.
they were cheap($200), and i've been wanting to try graphite. anywho, just tried them at the range and what a difference. the club speed increase is awesome, especially for me because i don't really have a full swing, more like 7/8 max. i would say i easily picked up a club and a half with these babies. i'll give them a go at a golf course tomorrow for further testing.

Which Golf Town did you buy those from? Online only has steel shafts left. I think Tommy Armour irons are underrated

damn...
anyways, I was playing guildford on thursday and on one of the holes where the power lines are directly above, i hit a drive that curved STRAIGHT up into the middle line and i'm asuming from the friction against the line [since the ball obviously wasnt grounded] made the ball disinegrate lol, it was pretty crazy

free shot for hitting those lines. played Golden Eagles South saturday, and Golden Eagles North today. 83 on each. first time for playing the south, seemed very short to me.

A friend and I are looking into starting up on golf. What are some other golf goods stores besides places like Sportchek, Golf Express (Station Square) and Golf Town?
We're not looking at getting anything crazy expensive because we just want to get a beginner set to play around with at first and upgrade later on.

Why don't you go to the place under the onramp (From Vancouver) of the Granville St. Bridge? Golf Liquidation I believe it's called. They're closing that shop so they have really good deals on stuff. It's older stuff, but you just want something cheap right?
Also if you play with older stuff when you get the newer stuff with better technology, your shot will be better =)
